The Pac-10 is getting defensive

It wasn't long ago when the nation said the Pac-10 is soft because they didn't play defense well. Many claimed the conference was an offensive oriented one--and on most accounts they were right. But things appear to be changing.
To start week seven of the college football season the Pac-10 has five teams ranked 21 or higher in total defense. Let’s take a glance at those five teams.

Early ESPN Top 25

Preseason rankings mean nothing. But it is always interesting to see an outside perspective on the strength of the Pac-10 and Trojan program. East coast / SEC / Big 12 bias will always prevail so take this top 25 lightly. ESPN’s Mark Schlabach ranks USC #4. Here is what he has to say about the Trojans:

We won't have to wait long to find out if the Trojans do indeed simply reload after losing so many star players to the NFL draft. After hosting San Jose State in their Sept. 5 opener, the ...

The Best in the Pac-10: Taylor Mays

(Photo via scplaybook.com)

Ted Miller at espn.com has spent the past month ranking the top 30 players in the Pac-10. Not surprisingly, numero uno is USC safety Taylor Mays.

Miller says of Mays:

No one who regularly reads the Pac-10 Blog could possibly question ranking No. 1 the conference's only returning consensus first-team All-American, the most important member of the Trojans' All-Universe 2008 defense and the almost certain first Pac-10 player taken in the 2010 NFL dra...

The expectations for junior defensive end Everson Griffen are extremely high heading into the spring, but Saturday’s practice showcased a defensive line missing it’s junior leader.

Pete Carroll plays joke on his USC football team

USC head football coach is a prankster. He pulled a April Fools joke on defensive end Everson Griffen and this past Sunday in camp he decided to play one on his whole team. Carroll says that defensive end Kyle Moore was caught by police in an internet piracy ring, but in the end tells his team in lieu of practice the team will go bowling instead. The players seem to have enjoyed it. What's with coach picking on the d-ends for?

Carroll was at it again on Tuesday, and this time the recipient was sophomore defensive end Everson Griffen.
