Follow-up on Buster Olney - Hardy, Hermida, Teahan

After posting last week about Buster Olney’s article and comments about arbitration-eligible players and free agents, the Twins traded Carlos Gomez to the Brewers for J.J. Hardy; the Red Sox traded Jose Alvarez and Hunter Jones to the Marlins for Jeremy Hermida; and the White Sox acquired Mark Teahen for Chris Getz and Josh Fields. Olney posted a column on his ESPN.com site (“Hermida’s Move Sure to be Replicated - 11-6-2009) supporting his earlier comments while noting that the Royals are loo...

Hermida Could Pay Off Big for Red Sox

by Frankie PiliereFiled under: Angels, Brewers, Marlins, Red Sox, Twins, White Sox, MLB Transactions, Scout's Eye ViewIn Advanced Scouting, MLB FanHouse's professional talent evaluator breaks down offseason moves from a scouting perspective. It hasn't taken long for the Hot Stove to get heated up as we roll past the World Series. Some key players have already been locked up and some high upside trades have already gone down. What do these moves mean for each club involved and how ...

Red Sox respond to Yankees WS win by… trading for Jeremy Hermida

Well, I probably should have seen it coming about the Yankees: when I got home Wednesday night, the dog had taken a big crap in the middle of the bedroom. I should have realized the Phillies were doomed.
Really, I can’t get too worked up about the Yankees, even though their winning is the kind of worst thing ever. No longer will A-Rod lack that one element on his resume. No matter what happens over the rest of his contract, Mark Teixeira will never for a second regret signing with New York over Boston. Johnny Damon will no longer have fewer rings than Manny, Ortiz, Schilling, Wakefield, Varitek, and any other 2004-2007 Red Sox. The Sox franchise title deficit swells back...

Jeremy Hermida: Classic Theo Epstein

Last offseason, GM Theo Epstein opted against making a big splash in free agency and instead decided to make a number of "low risk, high reward" signings. Epstein went out and signed John Smoltz, Brad Penny, Takashi Saito, and Rocco Baldelli to 1 year contracts with plenty of incentives. All of those players were coming off injury plagued seasons, but their history suggested that if they were healthy, they could be productive and help the Red Sox.However, the plan did not work out. ...

Jeremy Hermida trade revisted

I finally got around to looking up the players we got in return and they are iffy at best.
Hunter Jones has a chance to be a situational LOOGY for the Marlins. Frankly, at this point in his career he gets no one out with any consistency. But that doesn't mean he won't in the future.
Jose Alvarez's stats look pretty good, he can find the strike zone. However, he is a work in progress, he is 5'11" and only weighs a 150 pounds. In othe...

The Marlins traded Jeremy Hermida to the Boston Red Sox for two left handed pitchers.

The Boston Red Sox today acquired outfielder Jeremy Hermida from the Florida Marlins in exchange for left-handed pitchers Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez.

Jones, 25, made his Major League debut with Boston in 2009 and appeared in 11 games in relief. The left-hander posted a 9.24 ERA (13 ER/12.2 IP) with the Red Sox, compiling nine strikeouts. In 36 relief outings with Triple-A Pawtucke...

Market for Jeremy Hermida

It turns out there a bunch of teams who possibly want to add the services of Jeremy Hermida to their squad.

Speculation continues to run high that the Marlins will trade outfielder Jeremy Hermida this offseason.
---
The Marlins are hopeful Cameron Maybin will win the center field position, and Cody Ross is expected to return. Ross, also in his second season of arbitration, could be earmarked for right field, making Hermida expendable.
Some teams believed to be interested in Her...

Cubs Potential Offseason Targets: Jeremy Hermida

As I mentioned earlier, this is an exercise at some of the low profile names the Cubs could or should look at this offseason. And remeber, these articles are designed to just start the discussion, not settle the case one way or another.

I think it's a fair assumption that the Cubs will be likely focusing at second base and either center or right field along with some bullpen help. So today's guest is another possible non-tender candidate, Marlins outfielder Jeremy Hermida.

Hermida was the 11th pick in the 2002 draft and was the top Marlins prospect from 2004 to 2006 according to Baseball America.

His minor league numbers ended with an .834 OPS and that went up dramatically pretty much each year as his power developed. There's little denying his talent as the Red Sox were considering him as the main attraction in a Manny Ramirez trade before moving on to Jason Bay. On the other hand, there have been plenty of whispers about his attitude and general lack of fire about playing baseball.

Defensively, UZR at Fangraphs doesn't think too highly of him, nor does the Fan's Scouting Report, while BP's Rate 2 numbers have him at 103 out of right field for his career. A scouting report from John Sickels in 2006 didn't make him sound like anything more than an average right fielder.

On the bright side, his career splits are a .721 OPS at pitcher-friendly Landshark Stadium versus an .815 on the road. If you look at the year-by-year splits, there was a particular stunning discrepany in 2007 and 2008, so a change of scenery might be the match strike to get his career going. And at age 26 next year, a team would be hoping his best years are still to come.

He made $2.25M last year in his first year of arbitration eligibility, although the two sides settled before going to an arbitation hearing. I don't think there would be any shortage of interest in Hermida if the Marlins starting shopping, it just depends on what the Marlins will be asking or how much they want to save the money.

Much like Kelly Johnson, if the price is right I'm all for taking a shot at a 26-year old with a high ceiling and some major league success. Of course, the Marlins may want to move on, but they know what kind of talent they have as well and I would expect a pretty decent market for him if he is indeed shopped in the trade market. And if they just decide to non-tender him, you'd have to expect a bunch of small market teams are going to make their run at him with more playing time guarantees than the Cubs could offer.

Jeremy Hermida won't start again

Jeremy Hermida will, probably, not make another start for the Marlins again this season.

On Wednesday, Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said chances are Hermida will not make another start this season. Florida has four games remaining, and Hermida says playing a full game would be troublesome.
---
After the season, Hermida will be heading into his second year of arbitration. With changes expected after the season, speculation is he will not be with the club next year.

Jeremy Hermida maybe back soon

Jeremy Hermida may rejoin the Marlins as early as this weekend.

Jeremy Hermida took batting practice Wednesday for the first time since Sept. 2 when he went to the sidelines with a strained oblique. It's possible Hermida could be available to return to the lineup by the weekend.

While I'm glad that Hermida is feeling better and is able to resume baseball activities, I am not sitting on the edge of chair hoping for his return. Which maybe kinda strange since h...

Jeremy Hermida getting better

Jeremy Hermida finally resumed some baseball activities.

RF Jeremy Hermida said today he thinks he’s turned a corner in his effort to return to action, but he’s still not sure when he’ll play.
Hermida took 40 to 50 swings today, off a tee and some flips. It was the first time he has hit a ball since left the game Sept. 3 with a right intercostals strain. He took dry swings on Monday. "Yesterday was the first day I felt something positive,’’ he said....

Jeremy Hermida nowhere in sight

Jeremy Hermida is still ailing from his rib cage injury.

Jeremy Hermida, who exited Wednesday's game with a muscle strain, has yet to resume baseball activity.

If it doesn't feel really better by sometime today, he is probably going to be out for a number of weeks. If that is indeed the case, it won't bother me all that much since I'm enjoying watching Carroll and Maybin roam the outfield while doing pretty darn good at the plate.
Your thoughts may very o...

Jeremy Hermida is day-to-day

Jeremy Hermida left yesterday's game with an injury.

RF Jeremy Hermida left Wednesday's game after the sixth inning with a right intercostal strain. Hermida, who was 0-for-3, is listed as day-to-day.

An intercostal strain is a rib cage injury. If you have ever had bruised ribs, or some variation there of, or god forbid an oblique strain, the results are about the same. You can't twist and even taking deep breaths can be very taxing. The good news a...
