ProFootballTalk.com is reporting that Jeremy Newberry, an eight-year San Francisco 49er center who also spent one season as a Raider, is retiring from the NFL. And Newberry announced this via his Facebook page.

Jeremy Newberry to retire Gary Mialocq over at the blog The SF 49er Observer shows the San Francisco and Santa Clara connections run deep: San Francisco and Santa Clara Former 49er offensive lineman Jeremy Newberry is set to announce his retirement from the NFL due to a left knee injury. Newberry was drafted in the second round of the 1998 NFL draft by the 49ers and he started 90 games from 1998-2006 for the Red and Gold. He mostly played center while on the team but in 1999 he started all 16 games at right tackle and right guard showing his versatility as lineman. In August 2006 he had micro fracture surgery on his left knee which he never fully recovered from and was the beginning of the end for Newberry with the 49ers. The next year he signed with the Raiders starting 14 games. In 2008 he signed with the Chargers and only started three games. Newberry signed with the Falcons this past off-season and injured his knee while preparing for the start of training camp. His agent Doug Hendrickson said Newberry’s knee “just kind of went out on him recently when he was pushing hard to get ready for training camp.” Newberry was a great 49er and when they released him in 2007 I thought he was done playing in the NFL but his dedication shined when he started 16 games for the Raiders in 2007 showing he still had some gas left in the tank. I was happy to see a former Niner continue playing and being effective even after a serious surgery. He was a Pro-Bowler twice as a 49er in 2001 and 2002. Two times Newberry was awarded the 49ers “Bobb McKittrick award” which is given to the team’s offensive lineman who best exemplifies the dedication, excellence and commitment.
