Michael Jordan Jersey in Miami: A Classic NBA WTF

Seems like I've heard about it before, but maybe I didn't think much of it at the time, or just forgot, as it occurred way back in 2003, before the 'blogging era'. Dan Marino was courtside. ESPN showed his retired jersey in the rafters. Little curious to see it hanging in a basketball arena, but okay ... I'll go with it. I once ate at Dan Marino's steakhouse in the gloriously classy Hooters Hotel & Casino in Vegas ... or is it delightfully tacky, yet unrefined? In ...

Michael Jordan Leads Hall of Fame Class

Michael Jordan leads the 2009 class of inductees into the Naismith Hall of Fame. David Robinson, John Stockton, Jerry Sloan and Vivian Stringer were also selected to the Hall earlier today. It was inevitable that MJ would enter into the Hall on the first ballot. His career was unparalleled by any others. Besides averaging the highest ppg in league history 30.12, Jordan was a 14-time All Star, 5-time MVP, 6-time Final MVP, 3-time All Star MVP, 1988 Defensive Player of the year along with coun...

The Best F-You Sports Moments of 2008

We've all seen it. The New England Patriots epitomized it for 17 games in the 2007/2008 season. All the greats - Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, Walter Payton - thrived on it. It's the "F You" mentality. Athletes that come to the field with it often find themselves transcending the sport and creating moments that we're talking about days, months, and sometimes even years later. In 2008, We had plenty "F You" moments in sports, but here's a list of the best. I...

I'm Back!

What's goin on in the Yard?!?! I know I've been MIA for a while. My bad. It's been pretty hectic since the last time I stopped by. The season was accelerated due to the Olympics and I was focusing on my team. My team; we have not been living up to our own expectations this season. Of course, a huge wrench was thrown into the mix with Big Syl going down with her knee injury. But we finally got her back mid-July for a few games before the break, just to have our point guard, Dominique Canty, go down with HER knee injury. Thankfully, when the season resumes we will have both of them back at full strength. ('Nique just needed to clean out some floaties in her knee) So now we are sitting 3.5 games out of the last playoff spot in the East. I still think we have a good shot at making it. Both Washington and Indiana are having their shares of inconsistencies too, so maybe we can creep up on them!
As for the break...MUCH NEEDED!! I didn't go to a resort or vacation spot. I just chilled with some friends and took my mind off of basketball for a week. I play year-round, as do most of us WNBA-ers, so this down time was right on time! It's back to work in Chicago now. We will spend the break working on our weaknesses and strengthening our strengths so we can make this final push. You can probably catch me and my teammates out in the community since we will be doing a lot of appearances too. Speaking of community, I hosted my very own free basketball clinic on July 27th here in Chicago. Although we didn't have a HUGE Michael Jordan Camp turnout, the kids that attended had a great time! I think they walked away learning something new about the game of basketball, which is most important. I hope to be able to do this again next summer. It was lots of fun and if you don't know: CANDICE LOVES THE KIDS!
Check out my new website: www.candicedupree4.com. Keep checking back for updates!
Peace,

Would Antonio Margarito have knocked out Floyd Mayweather, Jr.'s puny behind?

With Antonio Margarito's 11th round TKO of Miguel Cotto in an epic battle, and the fact that Floyd Mayweather, Jr. turned down $8 million to fight Margarito, boxing fans around the world are probably wondering what would have happened to Pretty Boy Floyd had he accepted The Tijuana Tornado's challenge.

Who would have won, and how? Would Margarito have knocked out puny Money Mayweather's ass? Would Mayweather have destroyed Margarito?

Michael Jordan's Son Jeff Makes NCAA Debut

The oldest son of Michael Jordan has officially made his college debut for Illinois. After being summoned off of the bench late in the second half of a 63-55 season opening win over Northeastern at home, Jordan notched his first real college minutes. In just three of playing time the 6-1 shooting guard, who is wearing # 13, took one shot - a miss - and handled the ball a few times.

His mother, Juanita, was in the stands but Mike didn't make it to the game. I can't blame MJ; after all it must be tough seeing his ex after she just recently acquired $168M from him in their divorce settlement.

"It was good getting out there, breaking the ice," Jordan said after hugging his mom in the tunnel outside the Illinois locker room. "I come in with no expectations."

Juanita Jordan declined to answer questions after the game, and Jeff isn't sure when his dad will see him play. Maybe at the Maui Invitational next week in Hawaii, he said.

Jordan is a freshman walk-on this year for the Fighting Illini after turning down a full scholarship offer at Valparaiso. He came to Illinois from Loyola Academy, a prep school in Wilmette, which is a tiny northern suburb of Chicago. While there he was a four-year high school honor roll student, and earned an academic scholarship to attend Illinois.

According to reports, Michael Jordan told "Today" host Matt Lauer that he liked his son's decision to be a small fish in a relatively big pond, rather than having him accept a scholarship and starring role at a smaller school.

Younger brother Marcus Jordan is now a junior and still playing for Loyola Academy High School. No word on their sister Jasmine.

MJ Might Wanna Think About Another Comeback

Michael Jordan's divorce is final and the bill is in...MJ is set to pay his ex-wife Juanita Jordan 168 million dollars in what appears to be the most expensive break-up ever. According to the Times UK, the final settlement includes their 7 acre Chicago estate and custody of their 3 children. In ranking the top 5 celebrity divorces, the Times has Jordan as #1, next to Neil Diamond's $150+ million gut-wrencher.

Last week, Jordan Brand released the Jordan Spiz'ike shoes, a tribute to Michael Jordan and Spike Lee's historic relationship. The Spiz'ike was limited to 4,032 pairs with all of the proceeds from the sale to benefit Morehouse College.
