Dodgers at Giants Top of the Ninth

Dodgers up, facing Bob Howry.Manny's got his third (second lead off) double of the game. Definetely not the type of player we need, right Sabean? There goes the game. Double for Ethier after maybe 8 balls fouled back in counts 1-2 and 2-2. Dodgers re-take the lead.Sky high to triples alley. Nobody can get there. Bounces at the base of the wall for an easy triple and this game is as good as over. I'm disgusted. I hate the Dodgers.I didn't bother watching the rest of the inning but apparently we got out without giving up any more. But even with the top of our order coming up, will it really matter? DODGERS 5 GIANTS 3 Continue reading "Dodgers at Giants Top of the Ninth"

Brewers at Giants Top of the Eighth

Brewers up, facing Bob HowryKendall is out before I even knew what happened. Craig Counsell pinch hits and earns a walk.Sandoval is showing that he's not that great throwing on the run; Weeks beat his two-hop throw by a mile. Hart struck out looking very ugly. "Corey Hart looks like he's swinging a sword," Duane Kuaper commented.Braun could've brought the Brewers back in this game but hooked that ball foul. He ends the inning instead swinging and missing.Continue reading "Brewers at Giants Top of the Eighth"

Where's the Young'n, Brian Sabean?

Throughout last season and at the end of the year, Giants fans were promised a youth movement. The Rent-A-Player days were supposed to be over. We want to see the kids play. First the Giants got rid of Peter McGowan, the 66 year old. Who was he replaced with? Another 66 year old named Bill ...

Giants Sign Howry

The Giants have agreed to a one year deal worth 2.75 million dollars with relief pitcher Bob Howry. Howry, who went 7-5 with a 5.35 ERA in 72 appearances for the Cubs, will likely be the Giants' setup man. The Giants are doing what they can to improve their bullpen, mostly because they gave up the third most homeruns in the league in the least amount of innings pitched. They already signed Jeremy Affeldt, and bringing in Howry gives them a lot more options in the later innings. Howry is one of the top late inning relievers in the game, who in eleven major league seasons has a 3.68 ERA. Howry struggled in 2008, but compiled a 2.92 ERA from 2004-2007 in 278 appearances.A
It will be interesting to see if the Giants pursue any more bullpen help.A
This story was approved by MLB Rumors.

The Kerry Wood Saga Isn't Quite Over....Ok, Now It Is

If you have been paying attention to arbitration news in Major League Baseball, you may have heard that the Cubs had the option to offer Kerry Wood and Bobby Howry arbitration by midnight tonight. Well the Cubs chose not to offer that to him, but what does it all mean...?

Playoff Predictions

When no clear answer presents itself, go with the most obvious..

LDS:
Cubs over Dodgers in 4
Phils over Brewers in 3
Angels over Red Sox in 5
Rays over White Sox in 5

LCS
Cubs over Phils in 6
Angels over Rays in 7

World Series
Cubs over Angels in 5

Past the time until first pitch by doing some ball hawking. The playoff roster has been announced as well.

C - Blanco, Soto

INF - Lee, Ward, Fontenot, DeRosa, Theriot, Cedeno, Ramirez

OF - Soriano, Edmonds, Johnson, Fukudome, Pie

SP - Demspter, Zambrano, Harden, Lilly

RP - Wood, Marmol, Samardzija, Cotts, Marshall, Howry, Marquis

With DeRosa limping, the Cubs needed someone who could play the outfield when Lou needs to pinch-hit for Fukudome or the couple dozen other late-inning possibilities. Hopefully the only time we see Bob Howry is if the Cubs are nursing a 13-0 lead after Sutcliffe and the Penguin homer.

Thanks to Bob Howry's playoff tune-up, CC Sabathia pitching for the 3rd time in 9 days, and the Mets continuing to show that September swagger, the Brewers are in as the Wild Card, meaning the Cubs will face the Dodgers.
What does Bob Howry have on Lou Piniella?

I'm out of town and was only able to watch part of one inning up to this point and it just happened to be the 6th inning. Bob Howry's inning. In fact, I was only able to watch 5 batter and all 5 reached base.

His ERA is now above 5.5. He hasn't been any good for a very long time. Why is Lou giving this man innings when there are other alternatives? It makes no sense. All I know is that this can't continue if the Cubs want to have any success whether it's later...

Wood Closer to Being Closer

The only question regarding whether Kerry Wood can handle the closer duties is if he's durable enough. But Lou Piniella acknowledged Saturday that the setup pitchers usually have a tougher workload, which means the Cubs may be leaning toward giving the ninth-inning job to Wood.
