Double for Ethier after maybe 8 balls fouled back in counts 1-2 and 2-2. Dodgers re-take the lead.Sky high to triples alley. Nobody can get there. Bounces at the base of the wall for an easy triple and this game is as good as over. I'm disgusted. I hate the Dodgers.I didn't bother watching the rest of the inning but apparently we got out without giving up any more. But even with the top of our order coming up, will it really matter? Giants Sign Howry

The Giants have agreed to a one year deal worth 2.75 million dollars with relief pitcher Bob Howry. Howry, who went 7-5 with a 5.35 ERA in 72 appearances for the Cubs, will likely be the Giants' setup man. The Giants are doing what they can to improve their bullpen, mostly because they gave up the third most homeruns in the league in the least amount of innings pitched. They already signed Jeremy Affeldt, and bringing in Howry gives them a lot more options in the later innings. Howry is one of the top late inning relievers in the game, who in eleven major league seasons has a 3.68 ERA. Howry struggled in 2008, but compiled a 2.92 ERA from 2004-2007 in 278 appearances.A
It will be interesting to see if the Giants pursue any more bullpen help.A

With DeRosa limping, the Cubs needed someone who could play the outfield when Lou needs to pinch-hit for Fukudome or the couple dozen other late-inning possibilities. Hopefully the only time we see Bob Howry is if the Cubs are nursing a 13-0 lead after Sutcliffe and the Penguin homer.

What does Bob Howry have on Lou Piniella?

I'm out of town and was only able to watch part of one inning up to this point and it just happened to be the 6th inning. Bob Howry's inning. In fact, I was only able to watch 5 batter and all 5 reached base. His ERA is now above 5.5. He hasn't been any good for a very long time. Why is Lou giving this man innings when there are other alternatives? It makes no sense. All I know is that this can't continue if the Cubs want to have any success whether it's later...

The only question regarding whether Kerry Wood can handle the closer duties is if he's durable enough. But Lou Piniella acknowledged Saturday that the setup pitchers usually have a tougher workload, which means the Cubs may be leaning toward giving the ninth-inning job to Wood.
