Here are today's cuts: TE Adam Bergen, QB Casey Bramlet, DL Darrell Campbell, WR Patrick Carter, G Adrian Clarke, DT Amon Gordon, WR Justin Harper, RB Alex Haynes, TE Keith Heinrich, G Adam Kraus, LB Robert McCune, RB Allen Patrick, CB Ronnie Prude, T Joe Reitz, T Chad Slaughter, LB Gary Still, WR Ernie Wheelwright, DL Lorenzo Williams, and WR Matt Willis were waived. The team also put RB Cory Ross and corner David Pittman on IR.? The team will also be without CB's Fabian Washington and David Barrett are both suspended for the first game.

With only 16 days until the start of the season for the Purple and Black things should start to get at least semi-serious. Some things to watch as you watch the game. 1. Crowded Corner ? Since last year saw injuries take the starting corners out of the picture and thus allowed the defense to get picked on like an ear of fresh Maryland corn. The team has brought in a host of players looking to fill the void. The main matchup to keep an eye on is between David Pittman, Derrick Martin, and Ronnie Prude. Martin is coming off a solid showing from last game but is questionable with a shoulder injury for tomorrow. Pittman has worked hard and adds bulk and as of now Prude may be the odd man out. But, that's why you compete on the field. 2. Troy Smith = Starting Quarterback? ? I at least held this off to number two on the list. Coach Harbaugh has said that this doesn't mean that Smith is the starter but rather that they need to give him a longer look. This competition has broken down to presidential dimensions on the radio shows and blog networks, each side giving reasons why Smith or Boller should lead the offense. It's also fairly public that most of the team is behind Troy. In my view, it looks like Smith will get every opportunity to take the prize and he should be starting against the Bengals. 3. No ends on Tight Ends ? Newest signee Adam Bergen had a respectable showing last time out and that's important as Todd Heap and Dan Wilcox have seen very limited action. We may also see backer Edgar Jones line up at a position he hasn't played since high school. That tells you how dire the situation is. 4. Hold that line! ? The O-line has shown a certain Swiss cheese like consistency. But, there is a possibility Adam Terry will see some time against the Rams and the team is said to be talking with former, Titan, Ram, and Bear Fred Miller. 5. Terrell Suggs ? The hybrid is back and should at least see 15 snaps tomorrow. He wants a major payday but coming off such a mediocre year he needs to impress this year. Will be return to T-Sizzle form or is he just T-Fizzle?

Ravens v. Patriots Recap - Preseason Week 1

The Ravens and Patriots met in Foxboro tonight for a preseason matchup, and it was not pretty. The Ravens technically won 16-15.
spacerFor the Patriots, Brady and Moss sat, along with other starters. The Ravens sat McGahee and others. Kyle Boller got the start for the Ravens, followed by Troy Smith and finally a brief appearance by first-round draft pick Joe Flacco.spacer

Boller, the Eternal Rookie, started brilliantly, hitting Derrick Mason a few times and threading some beautiful passes. Then the Pats got to him. He fumbled the first time he was hit, as is his habit. He later threw an interception where the only doubt was whether the two Patriots defenders blanketing the intended receiver could decide which one of them was going to take it. Stop me if you've heard this one before.

Troy Smith played the middle 30-35 minutes of the game, and generally made great decisions with the ball. His biggest failing was in making accurate throws, which shouldn't be surprising since Cam Cameron has tried to tweak his mechanics to allow him to throw the ball more quickly. On some throws he confidently strode and hit his receivers. On others he missed by yards.

Joe Flacco made a pretty good case for worst professional debut of all time. His first snap and pass should have been picked off. His second snap resulted in a lost fumble. He ended the game 0 for 3 with a lost fumble, and none of the three passes were close to complete.

There were highlights for the Ravens though. New free agent acquisition Fabian Washington, a CB and former Raiders first round pick, had two interceptions. Free agent acquisition Brendon Ayanbadejo (the second Ayanbadejo in Ravens history) knocked down a two-point conversion attempt that would have given the Pats the lead in the 4th quarter. Ray Rice looked serviceable, though with a weak two yards per carry.
The Ravens defense was, of course, excellent. Ronnie Prude is trying to keep his spot on the team, after his excellent campaign two years ago was tempered quite a bit by his disappearing act last season. The Ravens have a glut of linebackers, with Ray Lewis, Bart Scott and Brandon Ayanbadejo solidly entrenched. Last year's draft pick Prescott Burgess would seem safe, as would Ray Lewis' backup Nick Griesen. Gary Stills is a Pro Bowler on special teams. That leaves quite a backlog for Antwan Barnes (also a 2007 draft pick), oft-injured Dan Cody, Edgar Jones, and my personal favorite, Robert McCune. McCune appeared to be everywhere tonight.
Yamon Figurs, though, stole the show for the Ravens. He had a 52-yard punt return that ended when he carelessly stepped out of bounds at the two. Later he had a 48-yard kick return. He looks like a totally different returner than the rookie who ended his season with a broken leg last year. Special teams were good all-around for the Ravens, who got two field goals from Stover and a third from potential kickoff specialist Piotr Czech. Coverage was excellent, as returners were stopped inside the 20 on at least three occasions.
The Patriots hardly seemed as though they were trying. QB Matt Cassel looked absolutely putrid. His replacement, Matt Guittierez, was better. He took a few sacks though and threw one of the Fabian Washington picks. The last QB, UFA rookie Kevin O'Connell from San Diego State, made poor throws but looked good scrambling.

The bright spots for the Pats (other than the fact they trotted out almost entire backups) were running back and Maryland alum Lamont Jordan and rookie LB out of Michigan Shawn Crable. Crable had an interception. Jordan had some excellent runs and looked quite shifty. His size makes him a great change of pace to Maroney.

I guess the story of the night were the Raiders' cast-offs, Jordan and Washington. Well, them and the fact that the Ravens probably really wanted to win and the Pats are just biding time til they can start the divisional round of the playoffs in January 2009.

Streams of cars and SUV's pour into the player's parking lot. One player delays pulling completely into his parking space, which causes a long line of traffic to form. Another player gets impatient as a horn is heard echoing the campus of McDaniel College. Meanwhile, a similar scenario plays out in the fan's parking area. The fans, like the players, are anxious to get to their destination and commence with the entertainment. While the players will be providing that form of art to the fans, it is a symbiotic relationship the two seemingly diverse groups share. The fans, in their varied attire and painted faces, with their cheers of appreciation and well wishes, also provide a service for the players. Without one, it is debatable if there could be the other. Yes, it is Sunday morning, the day of rest and worship for many, but today, there is no rest for those who flock to training camp each day. On this day, those numbers would be smaller than past days, perhaps reaching as high as 1,500, but the entertainment the faithful who showed up today would find, would be well worth giving up a day of rest. With the first preseason game on the horizon, players came out in shorts and helmets. The practice would simply be a glorified walk through with as little contact as possible when big bodies get together. Corey Ivey, going into his seventh year in the league, was the first one out of the locker room, just as he has done since the beginning of camp. He was joined by Evan Oglesby, Ronnie Prude and Jamaine Winborne as the inseparable quartet worked on technique and got a jump on stretching for the day's events. The younger players cling to Ivy, sharing personal stories and soaking in every bit of knowledge the veteran can offer. Soon thereafter, the rest of the young defensive players come roaring out of the locker room, accompanied by their coaches. The defensive linemen and linebackers joke around with line coach Clarence Brooks and linebackers coach Mike Pettine, as Brooks tosses a ball to one of the players, the player throws it back. Before you know it, a game of Hot Potato is underway and the players swarm the coach as the ball reaches his hand. While this game is going on, Ivy brain storms with his fellow defensive backs. They devise a game with a few of the receivers that have come out early, including Clarence Moore, Derrick Mason and Mark Clayton. Each player would switch positions with the receivers becoming defensive backs and visa versa. Ivy at first plays quarterback as Chris McAlister goes up against Mark Clayton. McAlister put on a perfect double move then broke deep. Ivy hit him perfectly for a make shift touchdown, leaving Clayton in the dust. Next up was Oglesby against Mason, again Ivy threw a perfect pass as Oglesby tried to run a crossing pattern. Mason would not be fooled and knocked the ball away. The players mulling around the fields caught wind of the action and cheered their teammates on while more of the receivers joined the action. After another great route by McAlister, who once again lost Clayton, this time on a crossing route, Mason and Ivy paired up. Ivy ran down the make shift field, cut inside then bounced out. Mason was right on his heels and just as Ivy caught the ball, Derrick picked his pocket and ran down the sidelines for a would-be touchdown. The players and fans erupted in cheers, and then the players resumed their real positions and drills. It was clear that the defensive backs won this mock game. If the team ever gets in a pinch for secondary help, Derrick Mason would make a great stand in. Likewise, McAlister would make a formidable receiver if the need should ever arise.
