49ers-Jaguars: Thursday Injury Report

Hope everybody is having a good Thanksgiving. We've got our Thanksgiving open thread if you want to chat about any of today's games. I wanted to get this posted before the food coma completely overwhelmed me. We've got the injury report here, followed by OC Jimmy Raye's post-practice press conference transcript.
We had some interesting comments from Jimmy Raye, including the fact that Isaac Bruce will not be active Sunday and Brandon Jones will be. ...

Smith's QB play has 'tilted toward outstanding,' says coordinator

Raye was very impressed with how Smith played in the second half of Sunday's game against the Packers. The only issues Raye brought up when speaking about Smith were his need to put it all together for a complete game and continuing to build his confidence.

Q: It sounds as if you think Alex is on the fast track to being a really good player in this league. Is that accurate?

Raye: "I think he has demonstrated . . . what you have to understand if you go back and look film o...

Singletary considers Bly over Brown for cornerback spot

If history has taught us anything, it's that when Singletary said he is considering making a change, it usually means the change is made.

Bly has been a starter throughout his career. He's been the team's third defensive back the entire season. Brown is coming off a shaky performance against the Packers and he's nursing a knee contusion.

Bly said he's ready to start, and Brown said he'll do whatever's best for the team.

If Bly starts, he'll see a...

49ers need continuity on offense

But Singletary made a big enough impact in his nine games as coach, the 49ers felt they had no other choice - for the job he did and the job they thought he would do in the future - to sign him to a four-year contract.

Oh, sure, the defense has some issues, too. But the biggest question marks with the 49ers remain on offense. Today, I wrote about how critical the final six games are for quarterback Alex Smith and offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye.

Folks were wondering when we'd get another great pearl from Mike Singletary and today we got one. Coach Singletary was talking about the need for a team to think like a champion and be able to overcome adversity. He indicated he didn't feel the team had enough guys who were there yet in that mentality. That was followed by this:

Niners show balance in shotgun formation

The 49ers have done something the past two games that they have never previously done. They have started running the ball out of the shotgun formation. In their 10-6 victory over the Bears, the 49ers lined up in the shotgun 23 times. They called 13 pass plays and 10 runs.

Passes: Alex Smith completed 9 of 11 passes for 71 yards. He was also sacked once, and scrambled once for 2 yards.

Runs: Frank Gore ran 10 times for 73 yards, and Michael Robinson had a 4-yard run.

49ers-Packers Final Injury Report

We're two days away from a monstrous game for the 49ers and we've got our final injury report of the week. A whole lot of probable players, but not much beyond that. Barrows thinks we'll see Matt Wilhelm starting at the Ted linebacker spot over Takeo Spikes, who remains "day-to-day." Wilhelm was solid last Thursday as a mid-game replacement for Spikes, so let's hope it carries over to Sunday.

49ers hand kick return duties to RB Glen Coffee

Fooch's Note: As small a comment as this was in the Chronicle article, it's obviously worth moving to the front page for discussion. To save space I moved most of the FanPost after the jump. For those wondering, Coffee returned 2 kicks for 25 total yards at Alabama in 2005, but does not appear to have any other kick return experience. Hmmmm......
Not sure if this is posted anywhere else but it says that Glen Coffee will be the kickoff return man. I don't rem...
