Redskins sign Tryon, Horton; Other Skins Updates

The Washington Redskins signed cornerback Justin Tryon, a fourth round pick, to a four year contract. Tryon has good speed and cover abilities but he's a little short and may have problems covering some of the larger NFL wide receivers. We've had some success with undersized cornerbacks before, so let's hope it works out. Like his teammate Fred Smoot, he's known to have a mouth and enjoys trash talking.
We may end up needing him, since Carlos Rogers is coming off major reconstructive surgery to repair torn ligaments late last season. There's a decent chance he could start off the season on the Physically-Unable-to-Perform list. Rogers never quite lived up to expectations, but has been a part of some top-ranked Gregg Williams defenses and his absence could pose a problem for us.
In other injury news, Rocky McIntosh is also coming off of season-ending knee surgery but the Washington post reports that he is scheduled to be medically cleared to play on June 19th. This is, of course, great news since Rocky was really having a breakout year before his injury.
Finally, the Redskins signed their seventh round pick, safety Chris Horton. With Horton and Tryon signed, we still have eight players left to sign. Washington's front office is going to start negotiations with their three second-round picks next week.

Looking Back at the 05 draft

2005 had its share of stars in the 1st round but also had a handful of busts check to see where your teams pick did.............

1. Alex Smith, quarterback, 49ers: When the first overall pick is competing three years later with Shaun Hill and J.T. O'Sullivan for the starting job, that's by definition a BUST.

2. Ronnie Brown, running back, Dolphins: After a so-so first year, Brown has been solid. A torn ACL derailed his opportunity to have a strong third year. Though he hasn't lived up to the billing of the No. 2 overall pick, we're not yet ready to call him a bust. (But we could be after 2008.)

3. Braylon Edwards, receiver, Browns: Edward is becoming one of the best receivers in the league. Clearly, not a bust.

4. Cedric Benson, running back, Bears: He's been a disappointment on the field, and his arrest conjures memories of past incidents in college. Without question, he's a BUST.

5. Cadillac Williams, running back, Buccaneers: Williams made a huge splash as a rookie, but can't stay healthy. After rupturing a patellar tendon in 2007, he might not play again. If he does, he might never be the same. Based on his top-five selection, he's a BUST.

6. Pacman Jones, cornerback, Titans: BUST

7. Troy Williamson, receiver, Vikings: We once tried to throw Williamson a compliment, but he dropped that, too. BUST.

8. Antrel Rolle, cornerback, Cardinals: When a cornerback might be shifted to safety at only age 25, it's not because he's a great cornerback. BUST.

9. Carlos Rogers, cornerback, Redskins: He's on the path to being declared a bust. We'll give him one more year.

10. Mike Williams, receiver, Lions: Maybe he wouldn't have been a BUST if the Lions had made him an offensive lineman.

11. DeMarcus Ware, linebacker, Cowboys: A 2006 Pro Bowl + a 2007 Pro Bowl = not a bust.

12. Shawne Merriman, linebacker, Chargers: He could still be a bust if he gets suspended again for steroids (or blown up on a regular basis by a pint-sized running back); for now, though, Merriman is clearly not a bust.

13. Jammal Brown, tackle, Saints: The Pro Bowler in 2006 slipped a bit last year, and the Saints were rumored to be shopping him. Still, he's not a bust.

14. Thomas Davis, safety/linebacker, Panthers: He's not spectacular, but he started 16 games in 2007. Not a bust.

15. Derrick Johnson, linebacker, Chiefs: Johnson made a splash as a rookie and hasn't taken it quite to the next level in two years since, but he's not a bust.

16. Travis Johnson, defensive tackle, Texans: When the biggest hit of your career is one that you unknowingly put on a quarterback's head with your knee, you might be a redneck. And a BUST.

17. David Pollack, linebacker, Bengals: Though he was on his way to becoming a great player, a neck injury ended his career early in his second season. Unfortunately, he must be declared a BUST.

18. Erasmus James, defensive end, Vikings: Knee problems have slowed his development, but barring injury to Jared Allen and Ray Edwards (and maybe Brian Robison), James won't be a starter in his fourth season. BUST.

19. Alex Barron, offensive tackle, Rams: The Rams wouldn't have been dreaming of Jake Long sliding to No. 2 if they thought that Barron was the long-term solution on the left side, or the right. BUST.

20. Marcus Spears, defensive end, Cowboys: Yeah, he has been a three-year starter. But he was rumored to be on the trading block earlier this year, and his impact hasn't reflected his stature as one of the top 20 players in the draft. BUST.

21. Matt Jones, receiver, Jaguars: This much-hyped quarterback-turned-receiver isn't very good, and doesn't seem to care. The Jags would have been wise to let him play quarterback — for another team. BUST.

22. Mark Clayton, receiver, Ravens: The thinking in NFL circles is that a player destined to be a high-end receiver performs like one by his third NFL season. For his third season, Clayton had 49 catches for 531 yards, and no touchdowns. BUST.

23. Fabian Washington, cornerback, Raiders: Being traded for a fourth-round pick after only three seasons automatically qualifies him for BUST status.

24. Aaron Rodgers, quarterback, Packers: He has looked good when he's gotten a chance to play, but the jury is out on whether he's a bust. Get back to us in a year.

25. Jason Campbell, quarterback, Redskins: Campbell is on his way to becoming a solid starter, and could evolve into one of the better signal-callers in the conference. Not a bust.

26. Chris Spencer, center, Seahawks: If he'd been taken higher, Spencer might qualify for strong consideration as a bust. But he started every game in 2005, and the Seahawks have gotten decent value out of him. Close, but not a bust.

27. Roddy White, receiver, Falcons: White was on his way to being a bust after his first two years. He broke out in 2007, which coincidentally was his first season without catching one-hoppers from Mike Vick. Not a bust.

28. Luis Castillo, defensive tackle, Chargers: Solid defensive linemen despite some injuries. Not a bust.

29. Marlin Jackson, defensive back, Colts: Steady but unspectacular Tampa Two corner. He might be another Jason David in a defense that requires him to cover wideouts down the field. But his performance allowed the Colts let guys like David walk away. Not a bust.

30. Heath Miller, tight end, Virginia: The Steelers arguably reached on a guy who wasn't healthy in the months leading up to the draft. They ended up with a solid tight end. Not a bust.

31. Mike Patterson, defensive tackle, Eagles: The Philly chapter of PFT Planet will revolt if we were to call Patterson a bust. Not a bust.

32. Logan Mankins, offensive lineman, Patriots: Solid contributor on the offensive line. Besides, we can't call anyone who paid $7,500 for the privilege of punching a guy in the crotch a bust.

Redskin Camp Report: July 31st

It was a beautiful day in Ashburn as the Washington Redskins took to the field for their third open practice of training camp. It was the first time the Redskins have been in full equipment at an open practice this year. Here are some observations from Tuesday's practice:

1) Laron Landry was suited up and had his first camp practice as a Redskin. He looked fairly comfortable, and doesn't look like it will take him long to get into the swing of things despite missing six practices. He was thrust right into the thick of it as he was lined up with Sean Taylor several times in the eleven-on-elevens. He didn't make any big notable plays, but he didn't make any big, noticeable mistakes either. He put in a surprisingly large amount of reps for his first day.

2) Perhaps the second most notable roster spot to watch on Tuesday was left offensive tackle. With Chris Samuels on the shelf for a few weeks, the Redskins will get a good opportunity to rotate through the incumbent back-ups and give them some time with the first string. The lucky recipient of Tuesday's honor of stepping into the role - rookie Stephon Heyer. Heyer took all the snaps with the first unit and performed very well. He didn't get beat badly in any incident and actually looked solid.

3) As a reward for being moved up to the big time, Heyer got to carry Jon Jansen and Casey Rabach's equipment off of the field at the end of practice. Such is the life of a rookie trying to make an NFL squad. It's always quite comical to see the veterans put the rookies through their paces every year.

4) Jason Campbell had a very solid day. He under threw a few passes, but all of his throws looked crisp. He also showed good mobility on a nice little run in the eleven-on-elevens on what was either a broken play, or a designed QB draw.

5) Todd Collins had a rough day. In fact, he threw more ducks than darts. With the emergence of Casey Bramlet in NFL Europa, and the seemingly logical assertion that the Redskins might be better off with a young quarterback that they can groom as the third string quarterback, Collins can't afford too many practices as sloppy as Tuesday.

6) Mike Sellers looked fine. Despite being injured on Saturday, he didn't look like he was laboring or struggling, and he participated in all drills. He's becoming almost as big a fan favorite as Chris Cooley is.

7) Derrick Blaylock had a nifty little run up the middle on a rare run play in the eleven on elevens. He ran into a big bunch up at the line, squirted out the other side and took the ball all the way to the end zone.

8) London Fletcher wasn't hard to pick out on the field. He was barking out directions to the defense and seemed to be very much in control.

9) Joe Salave'a looks to be in tremendous shape this year. He made a couple of nice plays as well.

10) Jerametrius Butler had a nice interception in the eleven-on-elevens, on a long pass from Todd Collins that was actually well thrown.

11) In the "completely unimportant category" - Carlos Rogers was wearing a pair of the brightest yellow socks that you'll ever see.

On the injury front, Clinton Portis did not practice. He was on the field but without equipment. Apparently he has a little bit of swelling and tendinitis in his knee, so the Redskins would rather err on the side of caution and gave Portis the day off.

Mike Espy also did not practice after injuring his knee in Monday's practice.

Some good news on the injury front, Randy Thomas was in full equipment and seemed to be taking almost regular duty.

The next open practice at training camp is Thursday, August 2nd at 4:00pm. Be sure to check the training camp section for all of the Redskins' practice dates.

Editor's Note: THN caught up with Shaun Suisham at the end of practice, so look for that article today or tomorrow.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the Skins Defence

<b>DEF LINE</b>
1. Ryan Boschetti: He will probably make it as a reserve can play DT and DE.
2. Lorenzo Alexander: He could make it as a reserve maybe.
3. Cornelius Griffin: Starter for Certain.
4. Jared Clauss: Played 29 games for titans why shouldn't he make the team?
5. Joe Salave'a: Veteran that can come in anytime.
6. Kedric Golston: Started 12 games I think he will start this year.
7. Anthony Montgomery: Big Athletic man he could get a reserves spot.
8. Bryant Shaw: I see potential.
9. Joe Sykes: Played in one game last year he will probably be a reserve.
10. Demetric Evans: Had eleven starts he will probably start some games this year.
11. Phillip Daniels: Played in all 16 games with 15 starts he will make it.
12. Jamaal Green: Practice Squad material if that.
13. Justin Hickman: Him and Alex Buzbee are probably just practice squad material as of right now.
14. Alex Buzbee: Possible Reserve but most likely practice squad material.
15. Andre Carter: He will make the team he started all 16 games.
16. Chris Wilson: Who's that? Maybe he has a shot.
17. Renaldo Wynn: He had played in 15 of the games last year he will make the team with out a doubt.

<b>Overall The D Line is amazing I give them a A.</b>

<b>DB's</b>
1. Carlos Rogers: Roger Started 15 games missed one due to injury, he will make the team.
2. Fred Smoot: Possible starter but will get playing time; I say it's between him and Springs.
3. Shawn Springs: Had injuries last year but will probably be spliting time with Rogers and Smoot.
4. Ade Jimoh: He will make the team considering he has played in 32 games straight with them as a reserve.
5. David Macklin: He had played in 14 games last year with the Cardinals he will probably serve as what Jimoh does.
6. Jerametrius Butler: He is a good Corner but injuries have set him back so he might make it as a reserve im hoping he does because I like him.
7. John Eubanks: It's hard to say if he will be a reserve but I think he will make the practice squad.
8. Leigh Torrence: Not sure about him they have so much talent.
9. Byron Westbrook: Now we just need his brother lol.
10. Brandon Register: I think he will get cut didnt do much in college.
11. London Fletcher: He will be amazing considering he was the best on Buffalo's D for the past 4 years where he led in tackles every year for the team.
12. H.B. Blades: He could possibly get some game time this year I like him alot.
13. Khary Campbell: He played in 14 games last year maybe he will be a reserve.
14. Dallas Sartz: He and H.B. will be great additions to the team.
15. Zach Latimer: I think he will make the practice squad.
16. Rocky McIntosh: He won't start but he will get playing time.
17. Lemar Marshall: He was a starter last year ofcourse he will make the team.
18. Kevin Jones: Practice squad this year maybe a reserve next year.
19. Marcus Washington: Starter last year and will be again this year.
20. Anthony Trucks: Practice squad material.

<b>Overall the DB's are solid and are even better then the D line in my opinion I give them a A almost a A+</b>

<b>Secondary</b>
1. Vernon Fox: Fox played in all 16 games and will probably be a reserve this year as well.
2. Reed Doughty: Will probably be a reserve like last year.
3. Pierson Prioleau: Hes a good asset that will probably get lots of playing time.
4. LaRon Landry: 6th overall pick I think he will be a starter with Taylor but will there personailities connect?
5. Sean Taylor: He and Landry are very similar both aggressive lets just hope it doesnt back fire.
6. Omar Stoutmire: Started 9 games with New Orleans He will be a good veteran backup.

<b>Overall ill give the Secondary an A- because the starters are very aggressive and might be too aggressive but they could be amazing together. </b>

<b>Overall the Defence together is a A they are one the best on paper but they just need to work together unlike last year having the worst but great talent.</b>

Joe Gibbs: Good Coach, Bad President

The Running Redskins offers thoughts on a John Keim article, 'suspect architect' in which the point is made that Washington's "theory to trade the uncertainty of draft picks for the known quantity of veteran players" hasn't exactly worked out that well under Joe Gibbs.

"The Redskins have traded away 11 draft choices under Gibbs. They have selected 16 players, with nine still on the roster. Of those nine, only three — Sean Taylor, Chris Cooley and Carlos Rogers — are considered full-time starters."
