Baseball Knowledge 101: DIPS > ERA

The Astros are awful, irrelevant, and just easy to make fun of having passed the trade deadline. Instead, we're focusing on objective baseball knowledge -- which just makes the Astros look even worse/inept. Today we're focusing on why DIPS does a better job at evaluting true pitching performance -- which ERA woefully fails to do. Why does it matter to you: it makes you a smarter fan, better fantasy GM, and gives you deeper loathing of Tim Purpura.

Jason Jennings finishes fine spring with a win

In his final outing of the spring Jason Jennings earned his first victory with the Rangers. Jennings pitched 5 1/3 innings against the Royals on Thursday allowing two runs.

He'll enter the season as the third starter behind Kevin Millwood and Vicente Padilla.

Jennings signed with the Rangers over the winter for a base salary of $4 million but can earn an additional $4 million in performance bonuses.

The 29-year-old from Dallas Texas is hoping that he can bounce back from last years ineffective and injury prone season with the Houston Astros. He finished last season 2-9 with a 6.45 ERA in 18 starts. It was the highest ERA of his career and also marked the fest starts of his career since his first season in 2001. The two wins were also a career low.
