Random 49ers Roster Facts and Figures

I'm sitting here in Seattle at Sea-Tac International Airport waiting for my shuttle bus and I thought I'd roll out a random post for you. Well first, normally I'm a fan of San Francisco International Airport. It's nice looking, easy to get to on BART, and all around an ok experience. My problem with them is their lack of Internet, or more specifically, FREE Internet. I don't travel a ton, but SFO is on a short list of airports without free wifi.&n...

Packers 30 - 49ers 24: Hidden Nuggets

I mentioned before that I get a press release with some of the positive statistical performances from the day's game. I'm thinking when the 49ers lose we'll call this Hidden Nuggets, since games like this sometimes require fans to look a little deeper for positives. And we can continue our gold miner theme on the site, right?
Frank GoreOne of the more interesting numbers came from Frank Gore. Gore's 42 yard rush pushed him over the 5,000 yard mark, makin...

49ers-Packers Final Injury Report

We're two days away from a monstrous game for the 49ers and we've got our final injury report of the week. A whole lot of probable players, but not much beyond that. Barrows thinks we'll see Matt Wilhelm starting at the Ted linebacker spot over Takeo Spikes, who remains "day-to-day." Wilhelm was solid last Thursday as a mid-game replacement for Spikes, so let's hope it carries over to Sunday.

Mike Singletary usually has an 11:45am press conference the day after the 49ers play. Today it was bumped up to 10:45 and I didn't get a discussion post up. I just received the transcript for the press conference and have posted it after the jump. If you'd like to read it while watching the actual press conference, you can watch the archived footage at 49ers.com.
There is a whole assortment of quotable info, but there is always some particular useful thoughts.&n...

Breakdown of the 49ers' four back-breaking turnovers

Here's what happened on those four turnovers, which led to 24 points for the Titans.

Turnover #1: First quarter interception. Smith was in the shotgun, flanked by running backs Frank Gore and Glen Coffee. When the Titans come with four-man rush, both backs exit the backfield. Smith has good time to throw but there's a little pressure up the middle at the end from David Baas' man. Smith tries to hit Crabtree at the left sideline 15 yards down field. Smith's pass is ...

49ers-Titans Wednesday Injury Report and practice transcript

There's nothing all that shocking in today's practice report. The 49ers are banged up as expected in certain areas, although they might be getting Reggie Smith back this week. Given the depth issues at cornerback, I'd imagine Smith might get to move around a bit on the field if he's healthy. He's listed as a safety, but he does have plenty of corner experience.
I've also attached the post-practice transcript for Mike Singletary and Alex Smith.&nb...

Smith 49ers' best chance, Singletary said

--Singletary was asked if Smith's style, his ability to get the ball down the field is what the 49ers need: "Right now, overall, I think Alex Smith really just kind of fit the bill, in terms of doing the things we need to get done."

--He reiterated that he never said he wants to be "3 yards and a cloud of dust." He did say he wants a team that can run the ball when they need to run the ball. So why haven't the 49ers been able to run the ball?

Smith's rally falls short; Singletary undecided on QB

Smith played very well in the second half. He completed 15 of 22 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns - all to Vernon Davis. The only blemish was his last-pass interception, which came on a fourth-and-10. Smith's passer rating was 118.6 for the game. (Before the interception, his rating was 142.1.)

The 49ers fell to 3-3 on the season with a 24-21 loss to the Texans.

The game featured a successful debut from Michael Crabtree (five receptions for 56 yards). But more on ...

Texans 24 - 49ers 21: QB controversy emerges, coaching fails the 49ers

First off, thanks to Fearless Frog for posting this graphic in one of the game threads. I think it's perfectly fitting for this recap. It's safe to say that this game will go down as possibly one of the more bizarre in recent memory. I say that due to two things: The dramatic improvement of the offense in the second half and the emergence of Alex Smith as the 49ers 2nd half QB. Of course, both of these things are probably related.
Given the big Alex Smith ...

Filmophile breaks down 49ers

When I touched base with him last week, the executive producer who created ESPN's NFL Match-Up was busy perusing the coaches film from the 49ers-Falcons game. Here is a portion of my interview with the always-insightful Cosell . . .

Has the play of the 49ers' defensive front seven impressed you?
Cosell: "For the most part. I think Justin Smith is playing really well - probably better than any point that I can remember. (Patrick) Willis is playing well. That's not a ...
