49ers cut former leading tackler Derek Smith

The former leading tacker for the Niners was let go today, as the team made a salary cap decision to save his $3 million for next season. Smith signed with the Niners in 2001 after playing his first 4 seasons in Washington.

Eureka! 49ers Headed in Right Direction

Here's a story I wrote about a month ago outlining the optimism I see in 2006 for the San Francisco 49ers, both as a football fan in general and as a 49ers fan.

One of the biggest points I made was the consistent drafting the 49ers have done in the past two seasons, making good moves to improve depth and encourage competition. With the 2005 and 2006 draft, they've established players who can be starters in the NFL and give solid effort.
