Versatile value: Free agents who wear several gloves

With teams unwilling to invest multiple millions of dollars in free agents this offseason, value is key. And what better way to get extra value than by signing a shortstop who also can play second base? Or a third baseman who can play anywhere in the infield? Or a corner infielder who also can serve as a corner outfielder?
With the market tough, the agent for free-agent shortstop Orlando Cabrera recently told The Globe and Mail in Toronto that his client is ready to consider a move to second ...

Base question: Who's on 3rd?

Billy Beane of the A's spent the general managers' meetings in Chicago this week combing for third-base possibilities because the team does not have an automatic option there next season. Infielder Adam Kennedy might not return, though he is interested in...

Pitching, Defense, Power & Depth: Taj's Plan for 2010

Now that my disappointment from this past season has somewhat subsided and I've gathered my thoughts as to what I think this team needs going into the winter, I'm going to attempt to put down on (virtual) paper my plan for making the A's more competitive in 2010 than they were in 2009.
First off, I'm going to admit that some of my plan involves a bit of "wishful thinking" and "sentimentality". From my perspective, 2010 will be the last time that we as ...

Adam Kennedy Hopes To Stay With A's

Infielder Adam Kennedy would like to remain with the Athletics in 2010, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. The interest is mutual; his agent has had "very positive" talks with the A's.
Kennedy, 34 in January, hit .289/.348/.410 in 586 plate appearances this year, playing second and third base. According to UZR/150, Kennedy's defense this year did not approach the performance from his heyday. The Cardinals released Kennedy in February, eating ...

Kennedy, Eckstein and Spezio

I like interleague play. It's cool going to new cities and playing against teams you don't face very often. I've never been to St. Louis or Cincinnati so I'm looking forward to checking out both stadiums.

St. Louis has been a trip I've been looking forward to since the schedule came out. I know more guys on that team than any other team in baseball. Adam Kennedy is one of my best friends in the game. Then you have Eckstein and Spiezio, just a bunch of solid guys. It's going to be fun playing them. Those guys were all part of our championship team. We had great chemistry. I loved hanging out in that clubhouse and it showed on the field. It was a special group.

I really like this year's team too. We have a good mix of guys, a lot of young guys and a bunch of older guys who've done it before. We can show the younger guys how to win. The young guys are hungry and that brings a lot of energy to the team but it's good to have the mix. You need a little of both. I guess I'm kind of in the middle. I'm not an older guy but I've been to the playoffs three times so I know what it takes to win. Ultimately you have to have talent and we do. You can only teach the young guys so much. You need talent to hang. Early on for me, Aaron Sele and Dennis Cook were here and they took me out to lunch every day on the road and taught me how to be a big leaguer. They taught me everything. I mean how to tip, how to act, a lot of things that go into it that you just don't think about.

Facing Ersty

I took a pretty good shot on the foot in Kansas City but it feels fine. It's a little purple but it's all good. I've been icing it down. The trainers panic. They make you do a bunch of stuff but I just told them it's a bruise, it'll be fine.

I've been hit a lot harder than that, trust me. I got a concussion playing football in high school. We were in San Angelo and I scrambled right. I couldn't decide if I was going to go out of bounds or take the hit and I just got smoked. Two plays later I handed it off and our running back broke it for a touchdown and that won the game. They checked me after the game and said I had a concussion. It's a good thing we scored that touchdown. Who knows what would've happened if I had to throw again.

It'll be weird for me facing Darin Erstad. He is one of my really good friends. We worked out every day in the offseason together, me him and Adam Kennedy. We had some good trash talking going on - who's going to win when we face each other. I'll have to go through the same thing with Adam later.

Ersty hit really well against us last week. He hit a home run and had six or seven hits. I definitely need to keep him off base. He's their leadoff guy and I can't allow their other big bats to bring him home. It'll be like going against your brother. We can be boys after the game, in fact we're going to hang out and watch the fight together tonight, but during the game you want to beat him badly.
