BYU Football Fall Camp Day 10

Day 10 of camp went pretty much the same as all the other days, clean and efficient. The first team offense looks sharp and is scoring at will. Today they did "Blue Zone" drills again and scored on both possesions. Harvey Unga ran in from 5 yards and Luke Ashworth caught the frist pass on the second try from 20 Yards. On defense during the second team offenses try, Steven Thomas picked off a Brendan Gaskins pass that was tipped by G Pittman. The defensive secondary continues to get shuffled around as Jaime Hill is looking for the right combinations. Speaking on Jaime Hill, as most of you know there was an altercation between him and player Jordan Pendleton after practice yesterday. I was there, but didn't see or hear the incident. Coach Hill commented on the altercation after practice today saying, "The policy here is that the coaches and players have the opportunity to talk to the press," he said. "That's the policy of the head coach, so that will always be the case. Secondly, I never talk about individuals. I never talked about them the last two years and I won't talk about them now. Other than that, there's really nothing else to say. Everything will be handled in-house."

I believe this will blow over and not really be an issue. On a lighter note… BYUCOUGARS.com has been adding videos each day from Fall Camp. Todays video talks about Max Hall and includes a guest appearance from Dennis Pitta.

BYU Football Fall Camp Day 9

Fall Camp continues on. Coach Mendenhall was pleased with the Blue Zone performance from the offense. Michael Reed continued to show he is the threat in the Blue Zone. He caught a 15 yard pass from Max Hall during the first series. In the next series the first team offense Harvey Unga ran for 7 yards and caught a pass for 10 yards. Hall then found Kaneakua Friel in the endzone, but he dropped a perfect pass. They ruled it a touchdown and let Mitch Payne kick an extra point.

Speaking of kickers... Justin Sorensen is getting consistently better. He wasn't the most accurate at the beginning of camp, but has honed his kicks and is making them. During drills he made a pair of 55 yard field goals. If anything, he will be used for long field goal attempts.

BYUCOUGARS.com has a new look and quite a bit of content. You can find player chats, journals, and videos all on their site. There is some pretty good stuff, so check it out. Here are some pictures to finish off Day 9.

BYU Football Fall Camp Day 4

Coach Mendenhall ended practice a little early today because things got a little chippy. Players looked anxious to get some hits in. They will be in full pads starting tomorrow. No other major movements in practice. The major news was after practice Freshman receiver O'neill Chambers interview with ESPN writer Graham Watson. You can find her blog on the espn college football page.

As you can see Chambers is fairly confident in his abilities. Hopefully he will learn the offense and can put his money where his mouth is. He is extremely talented.

As I said earlier, tomorrow is the first full day with pads. The public is invited to attend at 10 am. This is the only time you will be able to see the Cougars before their home opener on August 30th.

BYU Football Fall Camp Day 5

The first and only practice where the fans could attend was called by Bronco Mendenhall "clean." The players put on full pads for the first time this year and looked a little tentative. This is probably due to the fact that Coach Mendenhall ended practice early the day before because it was too physical.

Special teams showed the swinging gate protection formation. It has seemed to work in the past, even though I am not a big fan. C.J. Santiago continues to look good. The ball really booms off of his foot. Special teams looks improved from last year and Cougar fans should feel a little more comfortable when they step on the field.

The team will take pictures this afternoon and then begin two-a-days tomorrow with a session at 10am and 5pm.

BYU Football Fall Camp First Scrimmage

Key BYU Football sit out during their first scrimmage of the fall camp at Lavell Edwards Stadium. Harvey Unga, Dennis Pitta, David Nixon, and Jan Jorgensen did not participate during the scrimmage opening the door for young players to impress the coaches. Max Hall played well completing 11/15 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. His main target was tight end Andrew George. If the scrimmage was any indication of what is to come, the BYU Tight Ends will get a lot of looks. O'neill Chambers had a few grabs including a 45-yard grab down the sidelines. With BYU's running game and offensive line, I could see the Cougars having a lot of big yard plays using play-action. Chambers doesn't look like a freshman and if he can keep his attitude in check, he will get plenty of chances to impress fans this year. The Defense looked strong and help the offense on several drives.

Justin Sorensen got a few chances at some long kicks. He missed from 57 yards, and was good from 38 and 48. It will be interesting to see if Coach Mendenhall changes his 4-down territory strategy this upcoming season with Sorensen's long kick capabilities.

This concludes week 1 of Fall Camp. We will be back next week for more updates from BYU Footballs Fall Camp.

The Mountain West isn't a BCS conference, but its teams sure do like to try and crash the party. Every year pundits wonder which team outside of the big six conferences will make a run a major bowl game, and every year the Mountain West has a strong candidate.
