Can the Buccaneers repeat in the South?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will try to do something this season that no other team in the NFC South has ever done - repeat as division champions.
If they are to win the division, according to Buccaneers beat reporter Scott Reynolds from www.pewterreport.com they could learn as early as week one. "They play New Orleans on opening weekend, if they can steal a win there...

Camp Breakdown - TE

Tight end is a position that Bruce Allen, and Jon Gruden felt they needed some upgrades at this offseason. Gone is mainstay Anthony Becht, and he has been replaced by two free agent acquisitions. The TE spot is a position that Gruden loves to utilize in his offense, with lots of multiple tight end sets in both throwing and running downs.
Currently on the Roster - Daniel Fells, John Gilmore, Alex Smith, Jerramy Stevens, Tyrice Thompson, Ben Troupe
Gauranteed Roster Spots - John Gilmore, Alex Smith, Ben Troupe
John Gilmore was brought in to replace the blocking that Anthony Becht brought to the table. Gilmore is an excellent run blocker, and a solid chip blocker on passing downs. Alex Smith will start for the 2nd straight season, and looks to expand on his 32 catch, 385 yard season. He has yet to establish himself as a go to downfield threat, or even a red zone threat at this point in his career. Three touchdowns for a tight end in our offense is not sufficient. Ben Troupe has a ton of upside, and a ton of speed. He has the ability to stretch defenses down the middle of the field. He had a 55 catch 530 yard season in 2005, but has been plagued by injuries since then. A tag team receiving tandem of Alex Smith and Ben Troupe has the ability to really open up the sidelines for our receivers on passing downs.
No Chance - Daniel Fells, Tyrice Thompson
Battling for Roster Spots - Jerramy Stevens
Stevens finished the season real strong for the Bucs, that culminated in the game winning touchdown vs the Saints. The last two games of the season he had 8 catches for 103 yards and 3 touchdowns. Everyone has harped on his troubled past, and rightfully so, but the coaching staff and players seem to like Stevens. He should have a solid chance of making the team, although I'm not sure who he might unseat!

Olympic Free Agents?

Unsurprisingly, Becky Hammon, a ten year WNBA veteran and four time All Star, will be playing in the Beijing Olympics. But what is surprising is the South Dakota native, often described as the typical "All American Girl," will be suiting up for Russia and not the USA. Hammons decision has gained great attention and created a big controversy with US National Coach recently calling her "a traitor." However, Hammon counters that she was never given a chance to play for the American team. Last year when USA Basketball released a list of 23 candidates for the team, Hammon, last season's WNBA MVP runner-up, was not named on it. Though the list was later added with the list expanded to 30, she believes this was purely a token invitation.Instead she was given Russian citizenship while also signing a contract with Russian club CSKA Moscow which will pay her over $2 million over the next four years. And while some have called her a 'traitor,' many others love the business move. In addition to the big club contract, Hammon will earn $150,000 if Russia wins silver and $250,000 for a gold medal.Hammon's former coach with the New York Liberty, Richie Adubato, is one who endorses the move saying, "there is a big difference financially between what players make there compared to what they earn in the WNBA. … If Becky was my daughter, I would tell her to play for Russia. She wasn't going to make Team USA. It's hard to argue with her decision."Of course, athletes competing for a country other than that of there birth is not a new phenomenon. Several Cold War era athletes have represented North American nations after defecting. Martina Navratilova is one famous tennis star to gain American citizenship, while ice hockey players such as Petr Nedved and the Peter Stastny have represented Canada. And though it is not often publicized in America, soccer players from major powers like Brazil or Argentina will often elect to play for another country once it is clear they will not make the squad in their home nation. In the past World Cup; Portugal, Spain, and Japan all used players born in Brazil, while Mexico and World Champion Italy used players born in Argentina.Eligibility rules vary from country to country with each nation or region setting their own standards for citizenship. Some places, the European Union for example, makes it very easy to get a passport if either a player's parents or grandparents were a citizen of an EU country. This option is taken by many soccer players who wish to sign with European Clubs. Many leagues, such as in Spain, put a limit on the number of non-Europeans who can play for each team. Therefore, many Brazilians and Argentineans will try to get a Spanish, Italian, or Portuguese passport, so they do not use up the team's foreign player limit. Most of the time when these players earn dual citizenship they will still play for the national team of their birth, but for some teams with exceptionally strong rosters, they will use this second passport as an opportunity to compete in the top competitions such as the Olympics or World Cup. Other rules also allow players to eventually join the national team of a different country after living in a country for a certain amount of years. Such is the case for soccer players like Eduardo da Silva, a Brazilian who now is on the Croatian National Team after playing for Dinamo Zagreb for five years. In addition to number of years of residence, some nations will add other requirements before citizenship is granted. In the case of Maurice Whitfield, a basketball player from Philadelphia, a language test was mandatory before he was eligible to play for the Czech National Team. But often times nationality rules can be so loose that some people are eligible to represent 2, 3, or sometimes even four different nations. Such is the case for soccer player Owen Hargreaves of Manchester United. Hargreaves was born and raised in Canada to parents of England and Welsh descent, but moved at a young age to Germany to play for Bayern Munich. Eligible to represent all four nations, his eventual choice of England raised some eyebrows, as he had never lived in the country. This choice was not well liked by many England fans who did not want a 'mercenary' player representing them. For several years, Hargreaves was routinely booed by the English supporters, but in the end, he eventually won the support of many fans after several fantastic performances at that 2006 World Cup.Hargreaves example shows that for most sports, on field performance is all that matters, and oftentimes all the fans, and more importantly, the sports officials and politicians care about. The national pride that can be gained from a strong performance in major international tournaments outweighs the fact that 'foreigners' are permitted in the squad. And the desire to win has led to situations where countries are willing to simply give away citizenship to star athletes. Hammon was given Russian citizenship after simply signing a contract with a Russian club, without any family ties or ever residing there. The same was the case with Jon Robert Holden, another American who will play for the Russian Men's Basketball team. Qatar is another nation infamous for giving away citizenship to star athletes. There are numerous South Americans on the National Soccer Team, Africans in the Track and Field Team, and Bulgarians in the Weightlifting Team. The small Middle East nation with huge oil wealth has major ambitions to hold many of the top world sporting competitions, notably the World Cup and Olympics. However, as a small nation with little international sporting success, it is often overlooked for these events. Therefore, Qatar has spent billions of dollars on developing athletes in the country, but they have also engaged in practices that have greatly angered the international community. Among these practices is a 'scholarship program' aimed at bringing African youths from seven different countries to train at the Aspire Academy, a $1.3 billion, state of the art sports school. The Qataris state that there goals are simply trying to help talented players from desperate poverty, but skeptics see this program as a way to develop their future national teams. Sepp Blatter, head of FIFA, is one person critical of this technique saying, "their establishment of recruitment networks in these seven African countries reveals just what Aspire is all about. Aspire offers a good example of... exploitation."The changing of citizenship is so common today that many people do not even think anything is strange about it. This could be seen by ESPN.com editors during a series on the website called "So You Wanna Be An Olympian." The series followed an American triathlete named Kathryn Bertie as she went on a quest to achieve her dream of competing in the Olympics. After she failed to make the US Cycling team, ESPN quickly asked her to simply find a different country to represent. And in a few months time Kathryn had been granted citizenship to the Caribbean Island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis. So are these athletes' traitors, good businessman, or simply athletes desperate to compete at the top level? Though many people will have different beliefs on this topic, Bertine gives a very interesting opinion from the athletes perspective saying: I know some readers will consider what I'm trying to do despicable. They will see my quest for citizenship as a way of trying to worm my way into another country. They will chastise me for putting my USAness on the back burner for a shot at Olympic glory. Some will say my attempt to find a country to adopt me is un-American; or worse, Ugly American. Have I no shame? Have I no respect for my country or for the Olympics?Actually, I've got nothing but respect for the Olympics. Look at our world -- our planet is disintegrating, war is raging, politics are corrupting, genocide is erupting, children are obesifying, disease is rampant and cures come with ruinous price tags ... and yet, every couple of years, a bunch of athletes gather around the Olympic campfire and sing "Kumbaya" for two weeks, while kicking each other's happy butts. And for what? The chance to win an olive branch halo and a glorified coaster tied to a piece of ribbon? No. For the chance to be a part of something good. Something worthwhile. Something bigger than ourselves. Something that celebrates the body rather than trying to demolish it. That's what I respect. That is what the Olympics mean to me. If being an Olympian means being part of something internationally positive, does it really matter what country I represent? OTHER NEWS ACROSS THE BUSINESS OF SPORTS NETWORK Two New Bidders in the Mix for Cubs.
Tampa comings and goings

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers made a few minor roster moves today, neither of which should come as any huge surprise. The team re-signed tight end Jerramy Stevens and decided to let Bruce Gradkowski try and find a quarterback job elsewhere. Each move represents something completely different thou, at the QB position the team is very over loaded and it was known they needed to clean out some guys. While, at the tight end position, some may of thought the team was set with the current group but this signing of Stevens may cast some doubt on the cast. Let's take a look at both.

Best free agents for the Oakland Raiders to target

Almost daily, I read comments from the Raider Nation contemplating, proposing, and even campaigning for free agents that they'd like to see the Oakland Raiders sign. Until June 1st, it's unlikely the Raiders will sign many, if any free agents. According to Fox Sports, the Raiders are sitting at $106,555,076, while the cap is $116 million. That leaves only $9,444,924, roughly a little less that Nnamdi Asomugha is due when he signs his tender for being the Raiders franchise player. Since the Raiders somehow always find a way to fit everyone under the cap, it's not out of the realm of possibility that they may find a way to sign a few of these free agents still available.

Give Jerramy a chance…again

Since Roger Goodell took over as NFL Commissioner, he has made it clear that players must have high character to play in the NFL. Goodell has been tough on Pac Man Jones while other players seem to have gotten away with a slap on the wrist. If good character is a requirement for playing in the NFL, Jerramy Stevens should never be allowed to take a snap again.

My All-Time NFL Marijuana-Smoking Fantasy Team

Now that Denver Broncos Running Back Travis Henry has tested positive for marijuana and put his career in jeopardy, it begs the question, Why is it that so many athletes risk their livlihood to smoke drugs?

In the past few years, you can almost field a fantasy team worth of players who have been caught using recreational drugs:

QB: Michael Vick

RB: Ricky Williams, Travis Henry

WR: Randy Moss, David Boston

TE: Jerramy Stevens

Even more, at the last NFL scouting combine, top rookies Calvin Johnson, Gaines Adams, and Amobi Okoye all admitted to previously using marijuana!!

Then again, if you are 20 years old and have millions to spend, what else are you going to spend it on? You can only have so many fancy cars and HD TV's!!

I even remember years back when a bench player for the Celtics had a big Halloween party at his place in Boston. He was 24 with millions to spend, and so he had a special room in his house just for marijuana smoking! Can you imagine? An entire room devoted to toking...

I understand why these guys do it. I'm just shocked by how dumb they all are to get caught.

Fantasy Insight: Tight Ends

TIGHT ENDS: Do they have fantasy impact?

As your draft approaches, this is always a question that will come to mind. The truth is that this position has the least impact on your fantasy team, behind Kickers and Defensive Units. I have tried to break this down into those who will have a fantasy impact, what type of impact, and where they rank in relation to each other. (Unfortunately, it will depend on point assignment by league and quality of GMs to determine "where" in the draft you should take them)

1. Antonio Gates: In 2004, I avoided drafting a tight end until my last pick, partly because the major guns were taken WAY TO EARLY in my opinion, but also because I love to pick the "out of nowhere" player of the year...(this backfires as much as it pans out...I'll take the 50/50 shot on a position that has less impact than a kicker or defense.) I selected Gates with the last pick of the draft (Imagine, Antonio Gates selected as "Mr. Irrelevant") Expect him to play a bigger role in the offense, but that does not necessarily equate to more statistics than 2006. He will be covered harder, with more zones dedicated to him, and there are more and more teams relying on 4-3 defense which better handles the "slot" receiver, in which the majority of his routes are based.

2. Todd Heap: Set to be the only viable option to Steve McNair (who loves his TE's), you can expect him to put up similar numbers than he has in the past. Although littered with injuries over the past 3 years, if he stays healthy, I believe him to be able to put up statistics better than Tony Gonzalez (limited WR options for QB) & Jeremy Shockey (limited WR options and questions at RB).

3. Vernon Davis*: The answer to your question is YES, I do have him before Shockey & Gonzalez. Vernon has a solid RB, quality, but not truly elite WRs (Battle, Jackson) and a solid QB in Alex Smith (my sleeper pick at QB). Alex has grown accustomed to the short dump pass (mostly due to the lack of speed at WR)...

4. Tony Gonzalez: Due to the lack of WR depth (Are you drafting Eddie Kennison or Eric Parker?), and the contract issues with L/J, it appears that he IS the offense (but I still think he won't do as much as you want him to) Tony has lost a step at the least, has grown injuries more consistently, and generally has no support in the WR corp. leaving him succeptible to double coverage and zone packages focused solely on him.

5. Jeremy Shockey: Shockey has a history of injury that is re-DONK-ulous... Eli is shaky, Jacobs needs time to grow as the starter, Toomer is out for the year, Plaxico is...well...Plaxico. I have, nor ever will draft Shockey for this very reason...he is a great football TE, just not a fantasy points guy...

6. Alge Crumpler: Whether it be Michael or Joey, this position is going to be important. There isn't much for the WR corp, Dunn is hurt and Norwood is unproven. What else is there?

7. Chris Cooley: Just looking at his name at number 7 looks weird, but we are talking fantasy impact, not quality and "namesake". Cooley has the knack and ability to where you need him to be, as a quarterback, and as a fantasy GM. He can also spot as a fullback and run with it, too. With Jason Campbell working out the kinks, I foresee him relying on Cooley when Moss is unavailable.

8. Kellen Winslow: Health is this kids only obstacle. Whether Charlie or Brady, they need this kid to spread the offense and make it work. With Jamal Lewis powering up the middle, it should free up some more space in the slot for Kellen to become all that they hoped him to be. The defense can't necessarily cheat as Braylon Edwards has the speed to burn you.

9. Jason Witten: With Owens sore back, Glenn's trick Knee, and the lack of consistency out of the backfield (who will it be today, Jones or Barber), one thing is for sure, if the Cowboy's want to right the wrong of last season, Jason MUST be an integral part. Count on him to put up numbers better than he has in any previous year.

10. Greg Olsen*: Here is a player that will be a saviour to Rex Grossman. In the past, when a decision had to be made, Desmond Clark was often times to big/slow to beat his man and get open when Grossman was in trouble. With WR like speed, consider Olsen a slot receiver with excellent hand-eye coordination playing a TE position. It is safe to say that on running plays, he will be limited in action because of the lack of skills at blocking (experience only), but all in all, this kid is the next big thing at TE.

11. Daniel Graham: He can block, he can catch, and he is part of a growing offense with Cutler at the helm. Great news for Daniel, as most new QBs will rely on the tight end to bail them out of difficult situations. I expect him to actually be better than 11 by the end of the year, just too hard to justify picking him before the rest.

12. Ben Watson: Expect better numbers out of him now that Graham is gone, but not much more with the arrival of a littany of WR talent (Moss, Stallworth, Welker, Washington). It appears that Graham just may have gotten the better deal leaving in free agency, although Patriots fans wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

13. Randy McMichael: He has had his "drops" issues, his off-field issues, and his injury issues, but I believe he is in the right place at the right time. He has a quarterback with accuracy and confidence, a solid offensive line, excellent receivers, and a running back that has all ready established himself as a game-changer. All that leads to one thing, plenty of open/mid-field opportunity for Randy to get the yards, and red zone opportunity to put up some points.

14. Heath Miller: He had to deal with his own injury, then his quarterbacks...now it is time to reap the benefit of an offense that appears to be shifting from punishing run attacks to more of a spread offense. Hines Ward, Santonio Holmes, and Willie Parker are all going to get their looks, but that should not mean that Heath won't get his fair share within the goal line opportunities. Look for him to look like the player of 05, not so much 06.

15. L. J Smith: He has the ability to get up-field, the hands to grab almost anything, and as long as McNabb & Westbrook stay healthy, he should be look to on more occasions than he has had in the past. The WR corp is young, fast, but not necessarily reliable. In steps Smith, who has been solid throughout his career and demonstrated that he has all the potential to fulfill McNabb's "last minute, go to guy".

16. Dallas Clark: Some will wonder HOW I rank him at 16. It's simply resolved in four names, Harrison, Wayne, Addai, and Manning. Sorry Dallas, you will get your shots, but I am sorry to say that unless you are against an aging MLB (see Pats vs. Colts, 06'), you aren't going to get the looks you want...he is serviceable to start, but don't expect weekly outputs, more of a "if he get's something, great, if not, oh well"

17. Owen Daniels: Had he not been on the Texans, he would easily escalate up the charts. He is fundamentally sound, solid hands, average to above average speed, can block, and has great fantasy potential as the number two out for Matt Schaub (which is something that goes for him...new quarterback with weak o-line, means lots of short passes due to broken blocking plays). He will match his output of last year and only increase if Matt Schaub becomes the next Brady/Romo...

18. Bo Scaife: He is the dark horse of the position. With Young at the helm, anything can happen, including ridiculous numbers out of Bo. This will be a better year than any previous, steven but not sure that the Titans, even with Young, have what it takes to establish a solid offense enough to spread the ball (run/pass, alike) to open up the undeniably talentend Scaife. A bargain sleeper if the top 10 are gone and you have better positions to fill.

19. Jerramy Stevens: He has had the serious case of the "dropsies", but with Garcia at the helm, cadillac in for repair every two weeks, Gallaway as the only deep threat, this could be what he needs. Garcia is a quick drop, sideline to sideline quarterback with high accuracy, low yards per catch. Stevens WILL be an excellent option if you are picking through the garbage for something to throw on your roster and have potential to do "something".

20. Chris Baker: I like Chris. He plays for a team that is up-and-coming, has solid hands, can block fairly well, but what interests me is that he will have a solid RB (T.Jones, L. Washington), two very good WR (L. Coles, J. Cottchery), and Pennington with one healthy year under his belt and looking forward, not back. Chris should flashes of brilliance early in the season, but spent the better part of the last half of the season nursing injuries. Under "Man-Genius", this offense is ready to make a run at the playoffs, and I believe that Chris will have a great shot at being a part of it,especially with two WR who love to run deep.

* Ultimate keeper league players.

Well, that is it for now as I venture into the statistics of the business world. Stay tuned for our next Fantasy Insight installment, Kickers: Factors to make a solid Kicker pick.

2002 Draft Review picks 21-32

21.New England Patriots: Daniel Graham TE Colorado: Graham was predicted to be an every down tight end but that hasn't quite happened. He has been mainly been used around the goalline and he has gotten over 20 career touchdowns. He is now the highest paid tight end in the league after signing with the Broncos this offseason. Considering how his career has been so far he wasn't worth the money.
22. New York Jets: Bryan Thomas DE UAB: Coming out every analyst thought Thomas was a huge reach. For the most part they were right as he only has 15 career sacks. He may be turning the corner though as he had 8.5 last year. He should continue to be a starting linebacker in the Jets 3-4 this year.
23.Oakland Raiders: Napoleon Harris LB Northwestern: Harris was predicted to have an impact right away and he has had a couple good seasons. He is best known though for going to the Vikings in the Randy Moss trade a few years back. Now though he should be the starting middle linebacker for the Chiefs.
24. Baltimore Ravens: Ed Reed S Miami(FL): Many people viewed Reed as a talent with legal troubles. Well they were right about one thing, he does have talent. Reed has been to multiple pro bowls and has become a leader on the best defense in the league. Plus 30 interceptions in 5 years isn't a bad value.
25. New Orleans Saints: Charles Grant DE Georgia: Grant has been a very solid player so far in his career averaging 7 sacks a year. That was the knock on him coming out that he was very consistent but not great. Those numbers are worthy of the late 1st round selection that he was.
26. Philadelphia Eagles: Lito Sheppard CB Eagles: This was a steal for the Eagles as Sheppard was the 3rd cornerback chosen and he is the only one of the three to have gone to the pro bowl. Sheppard has now gotten the reputation of a shut down corner and should have another great season.
27. San Francisco 49ers: Mike Rumph CB Miami(FL): Rumph was supposed to be a shutdown corner coming into the league but he has been the total opposite. Rumph had become a target for most teams as they always throw on him when given the opportunity. He has had a hard time staying on a team so far and he is now trying to make it as a backup on the Rams.
28. Seattle Seahawks: Jerramy Stevens TE Washington: Stevens for the most part has been a complete bust as he has dropped lots of passes and is a locker room cancer. He is the third player in the first round to be best known for an altercation with Joey Porter. Stevens is now fighting to make the Bucs and try and live up to his potential there.
29. Chicago Bears: Marc Colombo T Boston College: Coming out Colombo was a monster tackle who was predicted to start immediately. He didn't start right away but he has now become a starting tackle for the Cowboys and should take over that role this year.
30. Pittsburgh Steelers: Kendall Simmons G Auburn: Simmons has ended up coming a quality guard who won a super bowl ring on the Steelers a couple years ago. He should start this year for the Steelers and could be an impact on the team for another 8 years or so.
31. St.Louis Rams: Robert Thomas LB UCLA: Coming out Thomas was a very fast linebacker who had potential to be a great player. Well that never quite happened as he has bounced around the league and has been on three teams in 5 years primarily as a special teams player. He is now on the Raiders.
32. Washington Redskins: Patrick Ramsey QB Tulane: Lets just say this wasn't the best quarterback class to enter the NFL as none of the first rounders have panned out yet. Ramsey is proof of that as he was the first draft pick in the Steve Spurrier era. Ramsey so far has been an average NFL quarterback at best and this year will be a backup to Jay Cutler on the Broncos.

Tank should play for the Seahawks

Although Terry's had some trouble and since been release from the Bears -- they got the wrong guy, it's Rex they should be cutting -- we're omitting one very simple thing: the guy has a ton of talent. We think around Week Nine, when Terry's finished serving his NFL suspension, that will be about the same time Marcus Tubbs breaks down. Join the "Bring Terry Home 2007-2008" campaign!

Jerramy Stevens: Once a frat-boy, always a frat-boy

Jerramy Stevens makes a horrible neighbor. Wild parties, vomit and used condoms? One of these just doesn't make a whole lot of sense, knowing Steven's past.

Jerramy Stevens' used condoms and vomit litter condo

Seahawks' TE Jerramy Stevens has been issued formal complaints because of loud parties and fights at his condo. Also, the residents have complained about finding used condoms and vomit all over their decks. Basically Stevens has worn out his welcome in Seattle and probably won't be re-signed as a free agent.

Jerramy Stevens Arrested for DUI/Stupidity

First Dominic Rhodes and now Jerramy Stevens. Why are athletes driving around drunk (and with Pot in Stevens case) when NFL team's are about to give them millions of dollars? I hope those $4.95 margaritas were tasty. Wait, why was a 6'6 240 pound NFL player drinking margaritas? I hate Jerramy Stevens.
