Saturday Niners News and Notes

This is the third year in a row in which the 49ers and Cardinals will open their season together. The Niners lost in 2006, 34-27, but won the 2007 opener, 20-17. Both teams are basically in the same position as those first two season debuts – well on the outside looking in on the playoffs. Only this year, the expectations aren't quite as high as it was for the '07 49ers or the '06 Cardinals.
The 49ers are as healthy as can be heading into tomorrow's game.
Extra special attention has been paid to securing blocking on the interior of the offensive line.
Bryant Johnson would the help the Niners with their game plan against his former team if he could still remember their playbook. There is also word that Mike Nolan is still deciding between Johnson and rookie Josh Morgan for the starting split end spot.
The Niners have been protecting their players more often in practice this week in an effort to be as healthy as possible for tomorrow. Nolan also hasn't decided whether Takeo Spikes or Jeff Ulbrich will start at inside linebacker.

Latest Niners News from Around the Media World

As teams go into vacation mode for a few weeks before training camp later this month, here is some of the latest Niners news:
Word from Pro Football Weekly is that second-round draft pick Chilo Rachal will move from right tackle back to right guard. The signing of tackle Barry Sims precipitated the move.
PFW also reported that head coach Mike Nolan let seventh-round pick Larry Grant know that he is a serious contender for the starting ILB "Ted" spot, next to star Patrick Willis. Grant figures to battle Jeff Ulbrich, Brandon Moore and Dontarrious Thomas for the right to start. Sounds like Grant is going to have to fight for his right to party in his rookie season. How do you like that Beastie Boys reference!?
