Time to step up, Chris Henry

The Titans' decision to draft a fellow Chris (Chris Johnson) in the first round a few weeks ago should have been a message heard loud and clear by Chris Henry.

Despite being a second round draft selection in 2007, Henry is going to have his work cut out for him as he attempts to become a part of the Titans' running game next season and beyond.

LenDale White expects big things from the Titans backfield

Many people compare the Titans new first round draft pick Chris Johnson to LenDale White's former college teammate Reggie Bush. In a few months White will see how similar they are. This should give the Titans a great one-two punch and will be very similar to the "Thunder and Lightning" combo White and Bush had at USC. For all of the people bashing White for his weight he says that he has been rehabbing like crazy" from arthroscopic knee surgery and is only 5 to 10 pounds away from his goal training camp weight. Both of these players should have big impacts next season and don't be surprised if you see Johnson as a receiver as well.

The Titans have several options in the draft

There is a general consensus that there are three areas of need the Titans need to address in this draft. The Titans need help at receiver, defensive end and defensive tackle. We've had some good discussion here on Total Titans about the various receivers who might be drafted and I'd like to expand the discussion to include the other possibilities...

McFadden, the next AP? More like the next Bush to me

Okay, I've had enough of this talk about Darren McFadden being the next Christ. The only way I will call him by that title is if Reggie Bush somehow equates to Jesus. I see more Bush in him than I do of AP.
Mike Mayock claims D-MAC is the second best running back in the draft according to his rankings. I would put him even lower than that. I won't argue that McFadden was a beastly college back and mesmorized everybody with his 4.2 speed. He's fast, we get it. But there's more to being a successful player in the NFL than in the NCAA. Ask Curtis Enis, Ki-Jana Carter and the list goes on. Maybe having your name rhyme with genitalia is something Mel Kiper should note as a red flag on his draft board? Speaking of which, what does Mel Kiper do in the off-season? I swear that man is Dracula. He sleeps half of the year away and has Frankenstein erghhh Chris Berman wake him up for the draft as he spends countless hours toiling with his rankings in his casket. Rumor is...he has hyperbaric chambers for his brain resting beneath his hair helmet
But back on topic....let's break down some D-Mac footage.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FCfZoPGEFA
Now my run by run analysis
0:10- He busts through a hole that's bigger than Britney Spears' canal during child birth. I saw very little elusiveness but great straight line speed.
0:28- Runs to the outside and delivers a stiff arm that gained him about 1 yard, color me unimpressed
0:44- Shows good vision to cut it back inside and takes it to the house with an unearthly display of speed. Very impressive for college but this WILL NOT FLY in the NFL. He's not going to be able to outrun most if not any secondaries like that.
1:10- What's special here? He uses his speed to turn a corner, an average high school back could have made this run.
1:23- Showed good balance skating down the sideline, but didn't show me much else besides what we already know.
Okay I've had enough McFadden talk.
Let's look at Reggie Bush. We've all seen him play one time or another. The man that averaged 8.9 yards per attempt his senior year at USC. But wait look at Lendale White, he averaged 6.6 YPC the same season. So basically Bush is a product of the USC offense....edging Lendale in YPC due to big play ability and less goal line touches. We've all seen how Bush isn't an every down back and is pretty much Kevin Faulk on steroids.
Now let's re-examine McFadden and compare him to Felix Jones by the number of carries and YPC
2005- 176/6.3 99/6.3 McFadden has more carries but the numbers are the same.
2006- 284/5.8 154/7.6 Small sample size but wow, Jones has better #s
2007- 325/5.6 133/8.7 Felix clearly outdoes Darren again
Now I'm not saying Felix is the better back, I'm sure the numbers would near even up if given the same carries but I do see a downward trend each year for D-Mac and an upwards trend for Felix. However I personally think if Stephen Hawking can turn a corner then he can average about 4.8 per year in the Arkansas offense.
Let me show you a proven winner, Adrian Peterson. Injury concerns aside let's take a look.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mL2LuhEKy5Q
0:00- He takes it inside, uses a strong burst of speed and cuts it outside again by using his shiftyness and puts his head down and finishes the run strong.
0:46- Shows off his moves, a little LT in him. Excellent agility.
1:07- Lowers his shoulders and powers in for the tough yards and gets the score
There's my take on the three young backs. I obviously love Peterson, how can I not since he's done it on both levels. Reggie Bush...not so much. He was over hyped a few years ago similarly to how McFadden is now. Bush has more moves, better hands but less speed. McFadden is all about the speed but I don't see enough "shiftyness" or "agility" for him to become more than a change of pace back. I'd compare him to Jerious Norwood of the Atlanta Falcons with a little less elusiveness. He'll be a good NFL player, but he's not worth a first round pick to me unless of course you need some lightning in a bottle....and that can be had in later rounds from different players. Also in the NFL character is important, and somebody with 500 paternity suits is more likely to make the All-Maury team than the All-Madden team.
I challenge anybody reading this to show me an impressive McFadden highlight where he does anything besides outrunning people and throwing a stiff arm....because honestly....who can't throw a stiff arm?

LenDale in Legal Trouble?

Denver police issued a citation to Titans running back LenDale White early Saturday morning and he has a court date to answer to two charges: destruction of property and disobedience to a lawful order/ interference and resistance.

Detective Sharon Hahn of the Denver Police Department, who answered media inquiry pages on Sunday, spelled out the details of the citation but said she did not have further details of the incident.

LenWhale White goes on a rampage in Denver

Denver native LenWhale White has been cited for destruction of property, disobedience to a lawful order and interference and resisting after a party being thrown for him. The citation was issued to the Denver native after an incident at 22nd Street between Champa Street and Stout Street. Sounds like someone was pissed the buffet was closed. LenWhale dropped to the 2nd round on draft day two years agon because of character issues but that didn't stop the Titans from drafting him, they figured his talent was worth it. They didn't learn their lesson with pacman?

Seattle RB logjam: Possible replacement for Chris Brown?

Julius Jones' decision to sign with the Seahawks creates a logjam at their running back position. Jones and fellow free agent signee T.J. Duckett have joined incumbents Shaun Alexander and Maurice Morris in a crowded Seattle backfield.

Considering the Titans' desire to add a running back and Reinfeldt's history with Seattle, could Shaun Alexander or Maurice Morris be a possible addition if the Seahawks decide to part ways with either of the veterans?

The ground game was undoubtedly the strength of the offense in 2007, but I understand why some people feel that it needs to be upgraded.
The Fisher/Chow marriage: Doomed from the start

The Jeff Fisher/Norm Chow divorce was finalized this week. As the case with many marriages that end, Fisher decided to give his ex another try by hiring Mike Heimerdinger as the team's new/old offensive coordinator.
So what went wrong with the Chow/Fisher marriage? How did one of the game's well-renowned offensive masterminds fail in his attempt to bring his magic to Nashville?

Mike Heimerdinger: Next Titans Offensive Coordinator?

The Rocky Mountain News and Rotoworld are reporting Mike Heimerdinger is on the Titans' radar. Heimerdinger took full advantage of Steve McNair's talents and hopefully would do the same with Vince Young, whose rushing stats plummeted in 2007.

The Tennessean in Nashville is reporting the announcement could come Thursday. It would be a welcome addition to the Titans' coaching staff.

Final Ten NFL Keepers for 2008

n most of fantasy keeper leagues owners can carry up to three players into the following season. With that in mind, 10-12 owners could potentially keep up to 30-36 players. Are there 30 players in the NFL worth keeping going into the 2008 season? I think so, considering most are young enough or proven enough to continue to impact the NFL.

A few weeks back I offered you the "Top-Ten keepers for 2008″ and I followed that up with "10 More NFL Keepers to Consider". On the whole, 10 running backs, five quarterbacks, and five wide-receiver dominate those lists. Here is the final installment of keepers to consider for the 2008 season.

Drew Brees (28): I realize that I was tough on Brees early in the season, but he has shown tremendous character by turning his and the Saints season around. Brees is once again a top quarterback and a must keep in the high-powered Saints offense.

Mr. Carrol Wont Be Comming To Washington

While most of the Pete Carroll attention belongs to Arthur Blank and the Falcons, Skins fans cant help but think why not us? If the Pete Carroll era in Southern California should come to an end, why shouldn't his new era begin in the nation's capital?
The Skins clearly have the most means to go after a coach like Carroll, and an owner with the will to get it done. If Dan Snyder puts his mind on something, we all know he usually gets what he wants. And why wouldn't they want Carroll? In his past NFL experiences he lead the Patriots to two playoff births and the team won the superbowl the very next year after he left.
The Skins know that Carroll has the ability to organize, plan, and inspire a dynasty with the incredible success USC over the last several years. The Trojans are constantly competing for the national title and constantly have the most talented team in football. His infectious personality helped him recruit and leadership helped him bring the talent together. While he won't be recruiting in the NFL, there's no reason to think that a coach who coached the best young talent in the league wouldn't want to return to play under him when they become free agents.
Imagine having a coach with an already good relationship with players like; Matt Leinart, Carson Palmer, Lendale White, Lofa Tatupu, Reggie Bush, Troy Polamalu, Mike Williams, Dwayne Jarret, Sammy Knight, and Frostee Rucker.
Truthfully there is no better time for Carroll to leave his self built dynasty either. While it's true that they have a great shot at winning the national title again next year, the cloud of Reggie Bush's scandal looms over usually sunny L.A. While it's no certainty, there is a possibility that USC could lose their national titles and be sanctioned by the NCAA, completely destroying the legacy Carroll put together. Not only would he possibly dodge the sanctions, he would be coming to a Redskins team that is ready to compete right away in the NFC.
The real question however is will Pete Carroll have the will to leave the comfort of USC to the NFL that didn't treat him so kindly years ago. While in New England he won an AFC East title, and a wildcard birth in two of his three years, but he wasn't able to win over the fans. Why? He fallowed a legend, Bill Parcells. Patriots owner Robert Kraft himself said it wasn't Carroll's fault, he was subject to unfair pressure. Would fallowing Joe Gibbs in Washington be any different?
For the Redskins it is not the most opportune moment as well. They already have two "Assistant Head-Coaches," one of whom, Greg Williams, has a contract that all but promises him the head coaching job when Gibbs leaves. It was part of Williams condition for not leaving for head coaching offers elsewhere, that if for some reason he gets passed over for the head coach position he will receive a huge bonus. If Carroll came to Washington he would almost definitely bring his own defensive scheme with him, edging successful Williams out.
It seems that while it would almost be a fairy tale to have Carroll build a dynasty in Washington, it doesn't seem like it's a fairy tale that will come true. If Joe Gibbs taught us one thing about running a successful organization it is that it starts with people. People like Greg Williams who stuck with the team through think and thin. People like the defense who have a close connection with their leader. Gibbs also taught us that continuity will finally lead the burgundy and gold back to the promised land. And that's no fairy tale.
