Fantasy Football Notes - St. Louis Rams

The St. Louis Rams suffered through a rough 2007 season as they went 3-13, including a miserable 1-5 in their division. But, unlike most crappy teams, they have a very valid excuse as they suffered through a slew of injuries. Star running back, Steven Jackson, was out with a torn groin muscle for 4 weeks. Quarterback, Marc Bulger, missed 4 weeks with a long-list of nagging injuries. Wide receiver, Torry Holt, started all 16 games, but was clearly affected by his bum knee. Offensive tackle, Orlando Pace, played in just one game, and return specialist, Dante Hall, who played in only 7 games due to a high-ankle sprain, was also missed.

If the Rams can avoid the injury bug to key players, it would not surprise the Bruno Boys to see the team compete for the NFC West title and produce many fantasy football studs in 2008. That is a big if though as Holt, Pace and Bulger are not getting any younger, Hall is just a smidgen of what he used to be with the Chiefs, and Steven Jackson's injury involves a muscle that men just clearly do not enjoy having hurt!

Bears Gould Highest Paid Kicker in NFL

Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould has signed a five year contract worth $15.5 million to extend his contract through 2013. The deal also includes a $4.25 million signing bonus and makes him the highest paid kicker in NFL history. It trumps the $12 million paid to Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri and the $14.2 million paid to St. Louis Rams kicker Josh Brown.

Gould signed with the team as an undrafted free agent out of Penn State in 2005 and became a fan favorite for his mixture of professionalism and personality. He frequently makes himself available to media and fans and has stayed humble through his popularity. He is mindful of his days getting cut by the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens and keeps a positive attitude.

He was voted to the Pro Bowl in 2006 and has made 84 of 99 field goals for his career, an 85% success rate. His most notable kick came in the playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks at Soldier Field in overtime that led the Bears to the NFC Championship Game. Gould has the fourth highest career field goal percentage in NFL history behind kickers Nate Keading, Mike Vanderjagt, and Shayne Graham. In 2006, Gould scored 143 points, ranking him 23rd for most points scored in a single season in NFL history. His 143 points also ranked him 2nd only behind LaDainian Tomlinson's 186 points for most points scored in the NFL that season. Last season, his 126 points was good enough to rank him 8th in the NFL in points scored.

In 2006, Gould's 32 successful field goals ranked him in a tie for 1st with Jeff Wilkins for most field goals made that season. In 2007, his 31 successful field goals ranked him in a three way tie for 2nd for most field goals made with Mason Crosby and Shayne Graham, and trailing Rob Bironas. Those are big numbers for a kid that was working as construction worker in Pennsylvania three years ago before signing with the Bears.

2007 Fantasy Football Recap - Kickers

Few things are worst than watching your kicker shank one right when all you need is 2 measly points to get the W that week. However, one of the few things that is worst is watching your kicker stink it up all year long. The following kickers have the dubious distinction of being "the Ugly" from 2007. If you didn't own them, then sit back and enjoy the read. If you did, sorry to make you relive the pain. The Bruno Boys present "The Ugly" Kickers.
———————————————————
Adam Vinatieri (Indianapolis Colts) - 112 fantasy points is really nothing to be ashamed of, but Vinatieri was cursed by expectations. A Super Bowl hero playing for the previous year's Super Bowl Champion is going to be dogged by lofty projections, and the Bruno Boys ranking of Vinatieri as the number two kicker in fantasy football at the beginning of 2007 demonstrates that perfectly.
Vinatieri though did not help his own cause, missing 6 Field Goals and 2 Extra Points on the year. The scariest thing for fantasy owners is that Vinatieri's long was just 39 yards. With long kicks giving those oh so precious bonus points, that just won't cut it.

Once the Draft is Done The Real Work Begins

It's drafting time for fantasy football players. The NFL football season kicks off in less than a week and millions of fantasy football fans are now actively participating in their league drafts. Once the draft is over, it's time to step back and take a look at the team you drafted and begin to look at your strengths and weaknesses. One of the biggest mistakes fantasy football fans make is sitting back and doing nothing with their team once the draft is over. You've now got to analyze which weeks your team may be weak due to bye weeks and figure out a waiver strategy that might help you fill in some holes later on. Plus, you now have to be on watch for potential injuries for not only your players but other players that may impact your team and your future waiver picks. Your work is not done now that your draft is completed, rather, it's just beginning. (more at the blog)

get your kicks here

I am currently in a debate over rating of kickers. A buddy told me he felt Kaeding was only behind Vinatieri in the NFL. I strongly disagree, i believe Kaeding is a great kicker and near the end of his saga he will be one of the NFL's elite kickers just know he hasnt proven himself. So i got some numbers together and in accuracy Kaeding is one of the higher numbers in the NFL but he hasn't even kicked 100 fieldgoals so heres some number let me know how you rank these kickers.

Last name % made attempts
Vinatieri 82.5 288 349
Elam 80.2 368 459
Kaeding 85.9 67 78
Akers 81.6 173 212
Wilkins 82.5 283 343
Hanson 81.5 356 437
Carney 81.8 413 505
Gould 84.1 53 63

Now to rate Kaeding in the top 3 even i feel is unfair he hasn't done it long enough. Stating Kaeding is in the top 5 is as bad as Wade Phillips stating Tony Romo is like Jim Kelly and John Elway. My rating goes like this:

1. Vinatieri
2. Wilkins
3. Elam
4. Carney
5. Hanson
6. Akers
7. Kaeding
8. Gould

Now unfortunatly i do have a life so i could not do all starting kickers to show where Kaeding truly lies but if your looking at it by career and performance i think you will agree. Please remember dont rank these kickers in fantasy rankings. We are trying to judge if you owned a team who would you want kicking for you? As well please feel free to disagree and make a valid arguement for your line up.

From my season previews, we take a look at new head coach Scott Linehan and his system going into St. Louis. Can he utalize Steven Jackson? Will the defense improve with their key additions?
