Jairus Byrd’s Contract Situation, Part 4

As Jairus Byrd remains unsigned leading up to training camp and mandatory mini camp, how much do the Bills value the four-year safety? We’ve already determined the level of play he will probably reach over the upcoming seasons, how much that production is worth, and the ideal term for a new contract, but not whether the Bills think they really need him.

Let’s begin with the case for Jairus Byrd.

First, he has been one of the best safeties in the NFL since he burst on to the scene in 2009. After a slight sophomore slump, Byrd established himself as a top-ten safety in 2011 and 2012. The table below shows Byrd’s +EPA ranking by season.

Byrd’s ability to cover the field, make plays on the ball, and still rack up tackles proves his versatility. Defensive Coordinator Mike Pettine requires his safeties to adapt to the wide range of looks he asks the defense to show the offense. This article from Buffalo Rumblings does a great job breaking down the many roles LaRon...

Kyle Williams: “You have to adapt to Tom Brady”

It is always tough being in a division where you have to face an elite quarterback twice a year, especially if you are on the defensive side of the ball. By the way of NFL.com, Buffalo Bills defensive linemen Kyle Williams talked about what a team has to do when facing Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. “With us playing Tom Brady twice a year, you have to do different things to him,” defensive lineman Kyle Williams told Tim Graham of The Buffalo News. “Because if you’re going to get in your defense, and ‘This is what we’re going to stay in, and we’re going to play it well,’ no matter how well you play, he’s eventually going to figure out how to spin the top on you. That’s one of the great things about what we’re doing now. You have to adapt to (the) Tom Bradys and Peyton Mannings. In today’s NFL you have to be able to defend the pass well. That is not something that the Bills did well last year, against anybody. This year under new defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt, the team will be pl

Bills D-Lineman Kyle Williams states the obvious: Team must adapt to Tom Brady

The Bills have been a model of mediocrity for years now, and have been a punching bag for the Patriots (along with the rest of the division for that mater) for the duration of the Brady-Belichick era.

Kyle Williams of the Bills says it's time for the team to focus on stopping Brady

This off-season, they shipped erratic and unreliable Ryan Fitzpatrick out of town, got a new GM, drafted QB E.J Manuel with the 16th pick in the draft, and hired a new defensive coordinator to replace Dave Wanndstedt. The Bills defensive unit struggled immensely last year, and there appear to be major changes in the works under Mike Pettine.

Speaking on the new look defense; lineman Kyle Williams expressed that a lot of the transformation has to do with dealing with Tom Brady and other high-powered, constantly evolving QB's and offenses (Quote from NFL.com):

With us playing Tom Brady twice a year, you have to do different things to him. Because if you're going to get in your defense, a...

Bills seek consistency from interior of defensive line

Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Kyle Williams said Tuesday that he "just wants to win." Before that can happen, the defense needs some consistency.Buffalo's defensive front showed signs of promise last season, though it was overshadowed by bouts of dreadful run defense. As the team continues to count on Williams to provide the strong leadership and stability that he has the past seven years, another lineman they're hoping can continue to step up is third-year tackle Marcell Dareus.Dareus's stat lines the past two years are near matches since being picked third overall in 2011. And though his big-play weeks have seemed to come in waves, Williams told the media Tuesday that the former first-round pick isn't the only one on defense with that problem."I think for him it's consistency, just being more consistent in his play. I think that can be said for everybody," Williams said. "There's times where we played well, individually or as a te...

Bills DT Williams eager to put foot issues behind

Bills defensive tackle Kyle Williams is finally looking forward to the opportunity of standing on his own two feet pain-free.

Noting he already has more flexibility in his right foot after having surgery in February to remove bone spurs, Williams on Tuesday said he fully expects to be cleared for the start of training camp in July.

''As far as the structure standpoint, it's healed,'' Williams said after the Bills opened their final week of voluntary minicamp practices. ''It's all about getting the strength and the power back in it, and getting ready to go. And that's where we are right now.''

Williams is no stranger to the recovery process. This marks the second consecutive offseason he's been held out of spring practices while recovering from foot surgery.

The seventh-year player missed the final 12 games of the 2011 season after having a similar operation on his other foot. The issues with his left foot were far more severe, because the spurs were tearing

Kyle Williams Rips Into Bills Defense

Kyle Williams has apparently had enough of the Buffalo Bills defensive shortcomings.
The Bills gave up the winning touchdown with 1:03 to play when Matt Hasselbeck found Nate Washington for 15 yards on a fourth-and-9 play, helping the Tennessee Titans to a 35-34 victory. The Bills defensive tackle even questioned the talent of the Buffalo defense.
"You're not very talented if you're doing what we've been doing, OK?," Williams said to the Buffalo News. "I've said it from the very beginning when we were at training camp. Talent doesn't matter. It doesn't matter what things look like on paper, what you say. 'We're going to be good because look at this sheet of paper.' That doesn't matter.
"It matters if you're playing fast, you play physical, you play together. It's everybody on defense. It starts up front, it works its way around."
Sounds like Williams is as frustrated as a lot of Bills fans are about a team where defense was suppo

After playoff flubs, 49ers' Williams eager for rematch with Giants

Surprisingly, the San Francisco 49ers will have Kyle Williams as a receiver and kickoff returner for the game Sunday against the New York Giants. That hardly seemed possible in the wake of Williams' two gaffes against the Giants in last season's NFC Championship Game. Williams accounted for two turnovers on punt returns, including a fumble in overtime that led to the Giants kicking a field goal for a 20-17 win. Williams not only overcame the huge psychological hurdle to make the team, he also has excelled this year and is excited about Sunday's rematch with New York at Candlestick Park. "We look at it as they had something we should have had," Williams said. "Going into it this year, we are going to make sure we don't leave anything like that on the field again." Williams was mainly talking about himself, and he said he did look up where the Giants fell when the schedule came out in April because of what happened in January. After the NFC ...

Bills DT Williams cleared to resume practicing

Buffalo Bills starting defensive tackle Kyle Williams has resumed practicing on a limited basis for the first time since having season-ending surgery to repair a nagging left foot injury in November.

Williams took part in nearly half the team drills with the starters on Tuesday, when Buffalo opened its second week of voluntary practices. That's a step up for Williams, who participated in just a few snaps per team session last week.

He's been told to ease himself back in after being cleared by both team doctors and specialist Robert Anderson, who performed the operation to remove bone spurs that were tearing at the player's Achilles tendon.

Entering his seventh season in Buffalo, Williams was a 2010 Pro Bowl selection and has been the team's most consistent defensive lineman.

Report: Bills like Michael Brockers

Earlier on Tuesday we mentioned that the Buffalo Bills are “extremely interested” in Alabama safety Mark Barron.
Now we’re hearing that the Buffalo Bills like LSU defensive tackle Michael Brockers, according to Matt Miller of the Bleacher Report. If they end up drafting him, they would then think about moving Kyle Williams to defensive end.
As we get closer to the NFL draft, a lot of information will be reported, but all we can do is wait for draft day to come in order to see what actually happens.

Williams rehab right on schedule

---Bills defensive coordinator and assistant head coach Dave Wannstedt said Thursday that defensive tackle Kyle Williams is on schedule to return from a bone spurs injury to his left foot. Williams, who said he should be ready by training camp, missed most of last season due to the injury.
"Kyle was in town last week and he came back just for his checkups and everything is right on schedule,'' said Wannstedt, who spoke to the media on Thursday at One Bills Drive. "There has not been a setback in any form or fashion. When he’s going to be cleared to do something and how much, I don’t know, but we’re looking forward to him having a great year, we really are.''
Wannstedt also gave an update on cornerback Terrence McGee (knee), who the coach said might take a little bit longer to return than Williams, but a source told The News that McGee expects to receive medical clearance by May.

Fantastic News: Bills DT Kyle Williams On The Road To Recovery

The 2010 season was more or less a disaster for the Buffalo Bills, but there was one unquestioned shining light: the play of DT Kyle Williams. The former 5th-round draft pick really came into his own last season, becoming one not just one of the better defensive linemen in the league, but one of the league’s top overall players at any position. Thankfully, the Bills rewarded Williams with a huge contract extension, ensuring that he’d stay in Buffalo for a long time. Between that and Buffalo’s selection of Marcell Dareus, I was drooling at the prospect of how good this defensive line could be.
And then the 2011 season started, and something was wrong. The dominant Kyle Williams we had seen in 2010 – slicing into the backfield, blowing up the pocket, making big plays – was simply not there. Williams couldn’t seem to get off blocks and had none of the burst that had made him so effective the season before. Speculation began to circulate that Williams was playing hurt, and sure enough b...

Kyle Williams upbeat on ankle

Bills defensive tackle Kyle Williams had surgery a month ago to repair a nagging bone spur in his left ankle. He got the cast off today and was watching practice in a walking boot in the fieldhouse.
Williams was upbeat about his health and said he will be healed in six months.
"I can already tell my ankle’s more flexible than it’s been in years," Williams said.
Williams' surgery was performed by Dr. Robert Anderson, an orthopedic foot and ankle specialist in Charlotte, N.C.
"I’ve had a bone spur in my heel, under my Achilles (tendon) since college," Williams said. "It’s been there for years. Over time, it’s just gotten bigger and bigger and worse and worse. The last couple years it’s just been pretty steady in the sense of hurting. This year it just came to a head. It was eating away at my Achilles. From the way the doctor described it, it was kind of like a violin bow going across a string. It was fraying it a little bit.
Kyle Williams update

Kyle Williams agent tweeted earlier this week that his client had successful surgery. Here are a few more details.
Buffalobills.com has confirmed that Williams had bone spurs on his heel, which can be painful enough in their own right. Those bone spurs were then pushing on his Achilles tendon. The bone spurs were so painful that Williams had a hole cut in the back of every one of his left-footed cleats to make the pain more bearable while he was still playing.
Williams played with a foot problem last season and was able to perform at a Pro Bowl level. It’s unknown if this foot problem was the same as the one that plagued him last year, but after three weeks in an immobilizer boot the problem was not alleviated.
So Williams had surgery to have the bone spurs removed and get his Achilles back in line. Head coach Chan Gaily told Buffalobills.com that Williams is expected to be fully recovered in plenty of time for the 2012 season and back to his normal explosive, disruptive self on Buf...
