Live Blog for NFL Week 5

Updated at 155pm

The Eagles are handling the Redskins early on. David Akers is the best player for the Redskins. Right as I say that, McNabb throws a bullet to Carlos Rogers, which was dropped.

Queue the Vince Young watch. Two picks thus far from Kerry Collins who has gotten an inordinate amount of love from the media. For those just joining, many dubbed Collins a basketcase earlier in his career. This is not to say he's a great player to have in the locker room now.

After falling behind by 10 points at Reliant Stadium, Houston knots it at 10.

In Detroit, the Pop Warner defense is holding Matt Forte to 3.4 ypc and stopped the Bears on 4th and 1.

So much for my upset pick today - Giants are up 17-3 against the Seahawks.

More updates at 2:40pm (halftime)

After 14 quick points from the Eagles, the Redskins have fought back with three field goals. Did anyone start Shawn Suisham today?

DeAngelo Williams with a career half against the Chiefs. Through a half and change, Williams has 127 yards and 3 TDs. Wild.

Miami picked up where it left off two weeks ago. Two second-quarter TDs have the Dolphins up 17-3. The entire San Diego offense has been ineffective. This isn't the first time they've been down double digits this season.

Houston has come back with fury, up 7 at the half. One bright spot for Indy - they have largely stopped the run. That said, they have probably overcompensated for its Achilles heel.

Matt Ryan and Roddy White may very well be the next big play combo as Sum alluded to a few weeks back. Up 17-7 at Lambeau.

I bet the baseball games will have more runs than the Titans/Ravens game has points. 3-3 at the half.

How about Kyle Orton?!?!?!

Two Minute Warning - Week 5 Edition

Welcome Bruno Boys Nation, to another installment of the Two Minute Warning. By now you know what we're covering and my intentions behind the thoughts and recommendations. Feedback goes to me, Joel Stubblefield, at jstubblefield@brunoboys.net. Let's get to it.

--------------------

Immediate Plays:

Quarterback:

Trent Edwards (Buffalo Bills) – Favre lit up the Cardinals for six touchdowns in Week 4 with Jerricho Cotchery and Laveranues Coles both tallying multiple scores. While Edwards is no Brett Favre and certainly doesn't have the same weapons at his disposal, he is aided by the stable running of Marshawn Lynch. The Bills didn't need to throw against the Rams in Week 4, but Week 5 could be a different story.
Honorable Mention: Kyle Orton (Chicago Bears)

Chiefs vs. Panthers Pre Game Gab

A winning streak is something that has not been talked about at Arrowhead for a long time, on Sunday the Chiefs have a opportunity to begin one. The Chiefs will travel to Carolina to take on the 3 and 1 Panthers beginning a seven game stretch in which they will face likely playoff teams. This game and the next six will be the test of all tests for the sixteen rookies on this roster. The Panthers in many ways are what the Chiefs hope to become.
Carolina plays a tough physical hit you in the mouth style of football and can mix it up with two very good receivers in Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad. Don't let the stats fool you the Panthers do not rank in the top 17 in any major offensive statistical categories, but they are not asked to put up a bunch of points they only have to score about 20 points a game and run the clock down.
The Chiefs will once again be led this week by Damon Huard last week he completed 75% percent of his passes and stabilized a very erratic offense. Herm Edwards has made several statements this week that make it sound like if Huard can find a way to pull off another upset he may stay in, until his hot hand cools off. Carolina's defense will present much greater problems for Huard and the Chiefs than Denver. The Chiefs will have to contain a intimidating front seven led by all pro defensive end Julius Peppers and second year linebacker Jon Beason. To make matters worse for the Chiefs O-line they will face this battle without rookie left tackle Branden Albert. Herb Taylor filled in nicely last week and played impressively in the preseason, Taylor will play a major roll in the success or failure of the O-line this week.

Brandon Carr and Brandon Flowers both caused a lot of turnovers and played well for the most part last week , but they did give up a ton of yards to the Broncos receivers. When you get turnovers you can do that but Muhsin Muhammad is a physical force and Steve Smith maybe the craftiest receiver in the league. He can always find a way to get behind coverage and is not afraid to go across the middle and take a hit. The "Brandon Brothers" will face another tough test this week to be sure. The Panthers as a whole are low turnover offense led by a very cerebral quarterback in Jake Delhomme and a two headed rushing attack featuring rookie Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams. Derrick Johnson will need to repeat his
breakout performance from last week. Johnson will be aided in his quest to repeat his performance, both Carolina tackles are injured and will be out this game..

Keys to the game
Find a third receiver: A quarter of a season is over and besides D-Bowe and Tony G the next leading receiver has three receptions. Devard Darling has not lived up to expectations thus far, Will Franklin has battled the injury bug and Jeff Webb just seems to disappear in games. Carolina will force the Chiefs into plenty of third down situations and the Chiefs can't keep getting by with only two options in the passing game. Until a third option shows himself defenses will start to scheme even more boldly against Gonzalez and Bowe daring them to throw it to someone else.
Keep L.J. angry: With most athletes you would want them to be motivated with L.J. it is not a motivation issue it is a anger issue. Every one knows L.J. runs the most effective when he feels slighted or has a chip on his shoulder. Early in the season L.J. struggled then the Chiefs gave him 10 carries in a game. L.J. had a meltdown after that and ever since he has been putting up 100 yard rushing games. I don't know if the Chiefs need to pay someone to tell him some "Yo Mama" jokes, Herm needs to make sure L.J.'s anger is at the appropriate level before this game starts.
Get a lead early: Every team wants to get a early lead, but having a lead may not be more important to any other team than the Chiefs. Every thing the Chiefs want to do is predicated on playing with the lead, running the ball, killing the clock, playing field position. You can't do any of these things if you are playing from behind. In addition scoring early will give the Chiefs offense confidence, with all the young players that will be playing they will need that confidence so they don't get overwhelmed in this game.
Injury report:
QB:Brodie Croyle- Shoulder, out
LB: Donnie Edwards- Ankle, out
LT: Branden Albert- Elbow, out
LB: Erik Walden- Ankle, questionable
Panthers Report:
T: Jordan Gross- Concussion, out
T: Jeff Otah- Ankle, doubtful
QB: Matt Moore- Leg, doubtful
S: Quinton Teal- Ankle, questionable
CB: Ken Lucas- Ankle, questionable
WR: Ryne Robinson- Knee, questionable

Weather Report:
Conditions in Carolina will be perfect for football. Temperature at kickoff will be seventy degrees with clear skies and will climb into the upper seventies by the final whistle.
Final Score: Chiefs 13 Panthers 27
It is hard to pick against a team that has a advantage at almost every position.. The Chiefs may come into this one with a lot of energy after getting the taste of victory, but Carolina will be more than able to with stand the Chiefs surge. This game will probably stay within a possession for a while since both teams are conservative on offense but I see Carolina putting this one away sometime in the second half.

Fantasy Football Week 5 Rankings - Running Backs

This is a very important Week 5 for so many teams out there in fantasy football land, and there is no position as important as the running back! For those that have started off hot, keep at it! Another win will definitely bring you one step closer to a playoff birth. On the other hand, if you are 1-3, 0-4 and lose this week, well, let's not even think of it. We are starting to hit the point in the fantasy football season to which teams are starting to slowly step away from the pack. Let's keep you going on the correct route! And if you are heading in the wrong direction, let's right the ship before it is too late!

This week the Cleveland Browns, Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams and New York Jets are out of commission. That is good news for struggling fantasy football teams as there is not a lot of prime talent missing this week. Sure you have Steven Jackson, Jamal Lewis, Thomas Jones and Darren McFadden/Justin Fargas/Michael Bush out due to byes, but none have done much this year as it is.

With that being said let's hope for a remarkable Week 5 for yourself, as well as Bruno Boys Nation. To make that happen, read through the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Week 5 Running Back Rankings.

Key Abbreviations: YPC (Yards Per Carry), YPG (Yards Per Game)

--------------------

1. Adrian Peterson (Minnesota Vikings) @ New Orleans

Adrian Peterson was the poster boy for inconsistency last year, as he was either doing extremely well, or not too great at all. This year is a bit different. His lowest weeks have been 77 and 80 yards rushing, both while dealing with a hammy. Last week though he did break free for 2 TD's against a solid Tennessee Titans defense. This week he takes on the New Orleans Saints who are 20th in the league with 122.8 YPG allowed as well as having allowed 3 rushing TD's. Look for even bigger yardage from Peterson who should triumph against this weaker rushing defense and put together a few nice runs! He is the Bruno Boys top RB for Week 5.
Point Projection: 25 points

NFL Power Rankings - Week 5

I don't know that I've ever seen a better start to an NFL season. Week four featured upsets galore, some key injuries, and much much more. Without further ado, I present the week 5 NFL Power Rankings.

1. New York Giants (3-0) - Sure they ascended to the top spot by virtue of a bye, but they are undefeated and are defending Super Bowl Champions. They haven't seemed to miss a beat on defense despite the losses of Michael Strahan to retirement and Osi Umenyiora to a season ending injury. They coasted to wins in their first two games, but were just barely able to get past the lowly Cincinnati Bengals in week 3, winning by a field goal in overtime. They'll be without Plaxico Burress (suspended) in week 5 in what should be an interesting matchup with the Seattle Seahawks, who may have their top two receivers returning from injury.

2. Tennessee Titans (4-0) - Best defense in the league thus far, hands down. Albert Haynesworth is a beast and Cortland Finnegan is gaining prominence as one of the league's top cover corners. Chris Johnson is a lightning bolt. Kerry "Cocktail" Collins makes this offense more stable, allowing the defense to do what it do.

3. Dallas Cowboys (3-1) - Their dominating performance in Cleveland in week 1 was followed up by a week 2 shootout victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. In week three they traveled to Green Bay, where they had never won a game, and took it to the Packers for an impressive victory. Rookie Felix Jones has proven to be a dynamic playmaker, but inexplicably didn't receive a single touch in the week 4 loss to the Washington Redskins. Some knuckleheads will argue that the Redskins should be above the Cowboys since they have the same record and Washington beat Dallas, but you can't forget that Dallas has scored victories over both Philadelphia and Green Bay.

Fantasy Football Week 4 Rankings - Running Backs

Week 4, a quarter of the way through the fantasy football season is where we are sitting. Some are riding high, others not so much. That was the story pretty much in Week 3 for the NFL running backs! Willie Parker and Brian Westbrook both suffered injuries, with Parker already being noted as a no-go this Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens. On the other hand you had LaDanian Tomlinson going for a pair of TD's, Frank Gore continuing on his hot streak and Larry Johnson finally putting a solid game together. We do have some bye-weeks this week with Kevin Smith/Rudi Johnson, Joseph Addai, Ronnie Brown/Ricky Williams, The New England Patriots crew, Brandon Jacobs and Julius Jones all having the week off. That takes away some pretty good players from the talent pool! With that being said let's hope for a remarkable Week 4 for yourself, as well as Bruno Boys Nation. To make that happen, read through the Bruno Boys Fantasy Football Week 4 Rankings.

Key Abbreviations: YPC (Yards Per Carry), YPG (Yards Per Game)

--------------------

1. LaDanian Tomlinson (San Diego Chargers) @ Oakland

Still showing some signs of an ailing toe, LaDanian Tomlinson did rush 26 times for 67 yards and 2 TD's while adding another 20 yards receiving in week 3. This week he takes on a Oakland Raiders rush defense that has allowed 104 YPG but even more alarming has given up 5 rushing TD's already this season. Everything is aligned for at least similar production to Monday Night's effort.
Point Projection: 24 points

NFL Power Rankings

Yet another exciting week of NFL football has come and gone. Some major upsets, close calls, and key injuries have really shaken up our rankings. Let's have a look at the rankings as they stand heading into week four of NFL action…

1. Dallas Cowboys (3-0) - Their dominating performance in Cleveland in week 1 was followed up by a week 2 shootout victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. In week three they traveled to Green Bay, where they had never won a game, and took it to the Packers for an impressive victory. Rookie Felix Jones has proven to be a dynamic playmaker. Marion "The Barbarian" is an absolute beast.

2. New York Giants (3-0) - Defending Super Bowl Champions haven't seemed to miss a beat on defense despite the losses of Michael Strahan to retirement and Osi Umenyiora to a season ending injury. They coasted to wins in their first two games, but were just barely able to get past the lowly Cincinnati Bengals in week 3, winning by a field goal in overtime.

3. Denver Broncos (3-0) - The offense is explosive, while the defense is atrocious. Brandon Marshall may have taken over as the premier wide receiver in the NFL. Jay Cutler continues to show poise in the pocket, a rocket arm, and deadly accuracy.

4. Philadelphia Eagles (2-1) - Despite injuries to Donovan McNabb and Brian Westbrook, the Eagles held on for a hard fought victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jim Johnson's defense did what they do best, blitz. In week 2, Philadelphia hung through 4 quarters of football with the best team in the NFL…in their own building. May be a different story when these teams meet in Philly.

Fantasy Football - Forecasting Streaky Players

So, not to belittle the impact of the difficult financial times on Wall Street this week, but I couldn't help but think of fantasy football when I heard a local Denver news reporter remind us all not to take drastic measures with our finances after this week's economic troubles. Fine, so basically everything makes me think of fantasy football. But still, the message is an important one that can cross lines here: don't take drastic measures with your fantasy team this early in the season. Only two weeks have passed, this is not an appropriate time to drop Carson Palmer, Joseph Addai or even David Garrard. I know it's really tempting to try and add some talent to your squad, but don't let it be at the cost of losing a potentially great player who is off to a slow start. If you need a historical list of players who ended the season with solid fantasy numbers but who had a slow start, let me know; it might just encourage you to hang onto the guys you've got.

With that said, there are some really tough guys to get a handle on after these past two weeks, but I've done my best at forecasting how this next week might go for a few of them

Isaac Bruce (San Francisco 49ers) - During Week 1, the dude was held to um, nothing. Nada. Big ol' goose egg. Then, last week he lit it up with 4 receptions for 153 yards....
