Hypothetically Speaking: The Josh Johnson Contract Extension

Will the Marlins sign Josh Johnson to a contract extension? MLB.com's Joe Friscaro sure thinks so:"I think the Marlins will sign Josh Johnson to a long-term deal. As hard as it was to see Beckett and Mike Lowell get traded, the Marlins received Hanley Ramirez in return. Ramirez is among the top five players in the game, so trading Beckett ended up being a good deal. The jury is still out on the Cabrera trade. But in your question, which I shortened for space reasons, you also mention...

Discussion: Mike Lowell

Daniel Barbarisi of the Providence Journal broke down the options for the Red Sox in regards to veteran Mike Lowell headed into the 2010 season. Lowell posted a .290/.337/.474 line in 484 plate appearances with Boston last season and stayed off of the disabled list following hip surgery last fall.Lowell has one year left on his Boston deal that will pay him $12MM in 2010, a price tag high enough to scare off any potential trade suitors unless the Sox were willing to cover some of the cost. ...

Laundry List: Lowell's Hip, Kotchman's Bat

Two items for today's laundry list:

1)	Hope that Lowell's hip heals

2)	Pray to Pedro Serrano's voodoo gods (yeah, that crazy guy from "Major League") that if he doesn't, Casey Kotchman's bat will rise from its slumber.

Mike Lowell came into this season on the heels of a revolutionary labrum surgery, one so new that it is yet to be named (that Lowell, incidentally, hopes will be named after him). Alex Rodriguez and Chase Utley had similar surgeries, yet L...

Lowell sizzling at hot corner

CHICAGO - His playing time continues to be inconsistent, but his hitting is anything but. With Mike Lowell getting the start yesterday at third base, his second straight day in the field, he got the Red Sox offense going with a two-run homer in the fourth inning of a 6-1 win over the White Sox.

From left: Timmy O'Shaugnessy, 2007 World Series MVP Mike Lowell, your intrepid columnist
Over the years, I’ve had the good fortune to interact with a number of celebrities, and the harder I’ve tried to distinguish myself as witty and/or clever, the worse it’s gone. Here are some of the stupid things I’ve said over the years:

To Sen. John Kerry, when I was 15: “I think you’re doing a really good job!”
To alt-rocker Juliana Hatfield, who was drinking water: “Better be sure to hydrate properly.”
To Pulitzer Prize-winning author Richard Russo: “Have you ever been to Schooner Wharf bar in Key West? Have you met Harry?”
To Catch-22 author Joseph Heller: “You’re my favorite writer!!!!”
To Dilbert creator Scott Adams: “What’s your shoe size?”
To Barenaked Ladies...

Red Sox Beat: The Underappreciated Awesomeness Of Mike Lowell

I'd like to think at some point, Red Sox Nation is going to appreciate what they have in third baseman Mike Lowell and not attempt to drive him out of town anytime a trade rumor appears on Twitter or a blog.Tuesday night, Lowell was on the bench as Boston played the 2nd of three games against Detroit. He was soon called into duty though after Kevin Youkilis was ejected following his bull rush on pitcher Rick Porcello after getting plunked. All Lowell did was hit a 3rd-inning solo homer to...

Another take on Lowell + options

Note: Tim outlined the possibilities and options much better than me here

Last year, the Red Sox lost Mike Lowell's services down the stretch and into the postseason due to a painful hip injury that zapped the third baseman's power and discarded his defensive mobility. With Lowell on the pine, the Red Sox were forced to play Kevin Youkilis at third base and Mark Kotsay every day at first base, where the longtime outfielder hit .226/.286/.345 in 84 second-half AB's for Boston an...

BoSox 3B Lowell put on 15-day DL with hip strain

Boston Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained right hip.

Lowell had fluid drained from his hip Monday in Boston, and received an injection designed to the surgically repaired joint.

The move is retroactive to June 28; Lowell had played in only two of Boston's last nine games and returned to Boston following Sunday night's game in Atlanta. The 35-year-old is batting .282 with 10 home runs and 41 RBIs.

Lowell to the DL

The Red Sox placed Mike Lowell on the disabled list today, retroactive to June 28 with his ongoing hip problems. That means he will be out until the All-Star Break, and could be reactivated on July 17th, when the Red Sox open the second half in Toronto.Jeff Bailey was brought up from Pawtucket, and will be in the lineup tonight, at first base and batting ninth. Kevin Youkilis will probably be playing third base most of the time while Lowell is on the sidelines.

Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell had fluid drained from his ailing right hip Monday in Boston, and received an injection that might relieve inflammation in his surgically repaired joint.

The Red Sox will wait at least a couple of days to determine whether the treatment was successful or whether Lowell needs to be placed on the disabled list, manager Terry Francona said before Monday night's game against the Baltimore Orioles.
