Remember when they handed out awards for the 1994 season?

It's one of those strange facts I always seem to forget, then act amazed by when reminded of it again. Back in Oct. 1994, the BBWAA handed out its annual awards as usual — no matter if ballparks had been empty for over two months, the World Series had been canceled or the league's players were striking and alienating fans across the country.Frank Thomas(notes) and Jeff Bagwell(notes) took home MVP honors. Bob Hamelin and Raul Mondesi, both future Hall of Famers, were named the ...

Video: Greg Maddux Gets his Jersey Retired

Greg Maddux, the future Hall of Fame pitcher, had his jersey retired by the Atlanta Braves on Friday. With the Braves, Maddux cemented his legacy as one of the best pitchers of his generation — and perhaps one of the top 15 pitchers of all-time.
Maddux pitched with the Braves from 1993 until 2003. Both before [...]Post from: Knuckle Curve

Gregory Alan Maddux

I'm recycling a post, but it's a good one. This is a Cubs scouting report on Greg Maddux an 18-year old draft prospect in a Vegas high school (click picture for larger version):

This is a perfect example of a pitcher who didn't show dominance early on. The most impressive and prescient note here is when the scout writes, "doesn't give in to the opposition, [...] he attacks the hitters on every pitch."

5 Questions With Boone Whiting

It is my pleasure to introduce you to Boone Whiting. Fans of Centenary College baseball are very familiar with one of the best and underrated pitchers in all of college baseball. Boone is a sophomore pitcher from Centenary College by way of Oakdale, CA. Last year he went 2-1, with a 1.53 era in 53 innings of work. He surrendered 42 hits and had a bb/k ratio of 17-41. He culminated 2008 by being named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team, the Summit League First Team All-Confer...

Maddux Calling It Quits

My favorite pitcher has decided to call it quits. 43 years old Greg Maddux was the best-controlled pitcher I have ever watched. I am a big fan of pitchers who don't have to overpower you and who have terrific control. Maddux, who is known for his impeccable control would paint the [...]

Greg Maddux Makes it Official

Now, I will admit that typically we don't do a lot with baseball here at Walker-Sports, mainly because no one here is a big baseball fan. But when we received news on Friday that one of the all time greats in baseball history was ready to hang it up, we knew it was big news. Earlier today from the Bellagio Casino and Hotel Greg Maddux announced to a crowded ballroom that he was ready to retire from professional baseball after 23 seasons.

"I really just came out here today to say thank you. I appreciate everything this game has given me. It's going to be hard to walk away obviously, but it's time. I have a family now that I need to spend some more time with. I still think I can play the game, but not as well as I would like to, so it's time to say goodbye." Maddux said as he addressed the crowd.

There is no doubt that the next time we see Greg Maddux in a press conference it will be to announce he will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Maddux leaves with four consecutive NL Cy Young Awards (1992-95) and a 3.16 ERA, especially impressive in the steroid era. He ranks eighth on the career wins list with 355 wins, giving him one more victory than Roger Clemons

Don't Let the Door Hit You On the Way Out, Greg Maddux

Greg Maddux will likely go down as the greatest pitcher of this generation. Maddux was an absolute master at his craft, compiling an amazing 355 wins and 18 gold gloves through guts, guile, smarts, athleticism, and control. Maddux never could throw very hard, but he did not have too. Maddux ...

My Yardbarker Debut

Hey Yardbarkers,

It feels good to finally have this blog up and running. I would have started a few days ago, but I haven't been able to get to my computer. I just bought a house in Arizona, where I'm at now, and there was a flood in the room where I usually keep the computer. They had to knock down two walls and replace the carpet in the downstairs rooms of my new house to fix everything. But everthing's back to normal now. It's all good.

I've been involved in sports since I was a kid. Every time I watched a game, I 'd imagine what it would be like to actually talk to Nolan Ryan or Greg Maddux. Those are the guys I idolized growing up. That's what I want to do here. I just want to have fun with the fans and talk about my experiences.

I was drafted out of high school in 2003 and I've spent the last few years climbing through the minors, trying to realize my dream of playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers. It's been tough at times. I started out the year in the bullpen, which was a real big change for me. I've never really done that before. You have to make adjustments and be prepared to pitch every day. As a starter, you have four days in between appearances. In the pen, you really have to keep your arm healthy because you could be called on to pitch back to back days. Now, I'm in the rotation. That's where I want to stay for the rest of my career.

Today's an off day and tomorrow we start a three game set with the Padres. My next start is Sunday. It's a big series for us. Hopefully, we can come away with a few big wins down in San Diego.
