Five Angels In A Sports Bar

I came across this interesting collection of photos posted by a young lady from San Diego who was hanging out with her girlfriends at Nationals Sports Bar on October 1, 2006. They sort of tell a story of what happens when you run into five Angels players in a sports bar. She even captioned a few of the photos and describes an altercation between Mike Napoli and Jeff Mathis which I found a little frightening. Anyway here is her story in pictures.

She met Scot Shields there.

The Day After: The Phils, Mathis Mania and a bad day for Joes

As we revel in all the drama that both of Monday's games brought, here are a few takes on the contests from America's bards and bloggers. Rich Hofmann, Philly Daily News: "They have this quality about them — cool, cojones, whatever. Everybody can see it, everybody who has watched the Phillies through the last few summers. It is what separates them from every team in every franchise in this city in most of our memories. The Phillies can read a scoreboard with the best of t...

Jeff Mathis doesn't mind overtime, gives Angels first win of ALCS

Score and situation: Angels 5, Yankees 4 (11 inn.) New York leads series 2-1 Leading lads: There are a number of Angels to thank for making this a series again, but with his game-winning double, Jeff Mathis(notes) undoubtedly leads the greeting line. The catcher's left-field gapper came off Alfredo Aceves(notes) with two outs in the 11th inning and allowed Howie Kendrick(notes) to score all the way from first. The best part was that it was Mathis' second double in as many innings, hi...

Was that Pat Sajak?

Joe Buck couldn’t even finish second-guessing Joe Girardi when Jeff Mathis won the game for the Angels. And then, all of a sudden, I cried out… Is that Pat Sajak?

If I’m not mistaken, from left to right: Scott Boras, Jorge Posada, Jeff Mathis, some umpire who isn’t C.B. Bucknor, Pat Sajak. Pat Sajak? The host of Wheel of Fortune? Vanna White’s cohost is getting prime screentime and seats at Game 3 of the ALCS? Really?
My wife took to the internets and quickly learned that apparently Pat Sajak’s an investor in the Golden Baseball League independent league. He’s also the purveyor of PatSajak.com, an under-construction website gearing up to help you “learn about an exciting way to save serious cash.” More tellingly, the...

Mathis leads Halos to 46-18 record since June 12

By Mike Schulte - Angelswin.com contributorThe Angels went into interleague play this season with a 28-29 record despite the consistent play of one of the top catchers in baseball Jeff Mathis. It was on June 12th that Mathis tried a stunning almost unheard of strategy behind the plate, squatting lower. Although this has led to a league leading number of passed balls and has made it so even my grandmother can steal a base off of Mathis, umpires and Angels pitchers rave about Mathis’ new mind ...

Mike Napoli versus Jeff Mathis: Platoon Not Catching On.

Let's see, Jeff Mathis is a self proclaimed "automatic out"
hitting below the Mendoza line with minimal power. Mike Napoli has 13 homers,
"as much raw power as anyone in the league" according to his manager, and is
hitting a solid .285 - not to mention his walk off double last night against
the Twins.

Why are they platooning again?

Oh, right, Mathis is a slightly better signal caller,
emphasis on the 'slightly.' He's no Johnny Bench back there. He's...

Great Honor

What's happenin' Yard?

Walked into the clubhouse today and the PR guys told me that I was named Pitcher of the Month. Pretty cool news to get when you first roll in. Then the rest of the guys congratulated me. Honestly, it means a lot because it shows we are winning as a team. For me to go 5-0 in a month, we must be playing pretty well. I know we haven't been scoring as many runs as we'd like, but we are still winning with our pitching.

One major contributor to the success is that I have command of my pitches. I have been spotting the ball well in critical pitch counts and that usually leads to success. Getting ahead early in the strike zone and not allowing walks has been key as well. The guys behind the plate have been key too. Mathis or Nap, both of those guys are a great asset for this team. I did receive the same award in July of 2006 but I think this five-game win streak matches a career-high. There have been some stretches that were similar. This one is special because I just came back from the DL and I was chomping at the bit to help out the team while I was out. It feels great to come out and contribute.
