Six players from the independent American Association have been sold to major-league clubs over the last five days, reports the league’s official site.
Minor moves: Zavada released, Castro traded

Unfortunately, this 'stache will not be on display at GABP in '12

In case you missed it, the Redlegs made a couple minor moves earlier this week. Let's catch you up on those shall we?

A swap with the Sox...

On Tuesday the club traded minor league 2B Jose Castro to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for cash (amount undisclosed).

The 25-year old split time between Double-A Carolina and Triple-A Louisville last season where he batted .306 with no home runs, 30 RBIs and 32 runs scored.

Castro was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 32nd round of the 2005 Draft.

Southpaw shown the door...

According to this report by mlbtraderumors.com, the Reds have released LHP Clay Zavada. This comes as no surprise since the 27-year old all but vanished near the end of the preseason...with his name appearing nowhere on any roster within the organization.

Cincinnati inked Zavada to a minor league contract over the offseason, which included a non-roste...

White Sox watch former manager Guillen from afar

As Ozzie Guillen tried to explain his way out of another mess he created with his mouth, Chicago's new manager felt compassion for his predecessor.

Robin Ventura watched and wished the best for Guillen.

''It's a tough day for him,'' Ventura said Tuesday, hours after Guillen apologized in South Florida for comments lauding Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, remarks that led some to call for his firing. ''He's a friend, so it was not easy to watch. He looked sincere and meant it.''

Ventura was Guillen's teammate for eight seasons in Chicago. This year, he replaced the outspoken manager, who led the White Sox to a World Series title in 2005 before leaving them after eight stormy seasons during which Guillen often made headlines with outrageous remarks.

Most of Chicago's players declined to talk about Guillen's situation.

One willing to talk was infielder Gordon Beckham, who said most White Sox players believe Guillen's true feelings did not come out in t

Indians lock up catcher Santana with 5-year deal

Two days after his birthday, Carlos Santana got a precious gift - financial security.

Cleveland's talented catcher signed a five-year, $21 million contract with the Indians, who locked up another ''cornerstone'' player they believe is only beginning to tap into his potential.

For the 26-year-old Santana, the deal provides peace of mind.

''When you come from poverty like he has, you always have that fear of something going wrong, even if you project to be a superstar,'' said Andy Mota, one of Santana's agents. ''There is always that fear of losing everything you worked for. You get to a day like today and it's a sigh of relief.''

The Indians had contractual control the next four years over Santana, who wouldn't have been eligible for free agency until after the 2016 season. However, after Santana hit 27 homers last season and improved defensively behind the plate, the Indians felt the timing was right to guarantee he'll have an extended st

Here is how the Reds prospects performed in the game Wednesday afternoon:

Brodie Greene went 0-2.
Todd Frazier went 0-3.
Jose Castro went 0-1.
Devin Mesoraco went 0-2.
Travis Webb allowed two runs in an inning of work.

The Reds sent Dioner Navarro, Corky Miller and Daryl Jones to the minors. That leaves 28 players left in camp (that are healthy).
Alex Eisenberg has up his Reds Top 15 prospects over at Baseball-Intellect.com. You can get the entire list with brief reports for free, but for in depth reports you do need to subscribe. Go check it out, Alex does some fantastic work.
Tom Nichols has up his final piece from his Dayton Dragons positional previews at DaytonDragons.com. The final piece looks at the relief pitchers. Here are the players he looks at: James Allen, Brooks Pinckard, Erik Miller, Nick Fleece, Ryan Kemp, Kyle McMyne, Carlos Contreras, Dan Jensen, Jimmy Moran and El’Hajj Muhammad.

Del Nido sentenced to prison

Sevilla President Jose Maria del Nido was sentenced Monday to 7 1/2 years in prison for his involvement in the embezzlement of public funds in the southern Spanish town of Marbella.

Del Nido will also have to pay the Marbella town hall $3.5 million for his role as a lawyer in the corruption ring from 1999-2003.

Marbella's former mayor, Julian Munoz, received the same sentence, while the municipality's former urban planning adviser, Juan Antonio Roca, was sentenced to four years in prison.

They have five days to appeal the sentence handed down by the regional Malaga court to Madrid's Supreme Court.

Sevilla vice president Jose Castro defended Del Nido.

"This is terribly unjust," he said.

Del Nido is in his ninth season as club president. During that period, Sevilla has won two UEFA Cup titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, one European Super Cup and two third-place finishes in the Spanish league.

Coach Marcelino Garcia said the court ruling would not affect the team on the field.
