2009 NFL Draft Team Needs: Tennessee Titans

In recent years, Tennessee Titans fans have clamored for a top-flight wide receiver. In 2007, the team selected safety Michael Griffin from the University of Texas. In 2008, they “reached” for the speedy running back Chris Johnson out of ECU. Fortunately, those picks have paid huge dividends thus far, as both have become Pro Bowlers [...]

Tennessee Titans Draft Prospects: Cornerbacks

The Titans do draft DBs in the first round. The Titans have picked a defensive back with their first round pick in three of the last six NFL drafts, and there’s a very realistic chance that the trend continues this year. In that span of time Tennessee has drafted Pro Bowl FS Michael Griffin, Andre [...]

Titan Up: Week 9 Game Balls

Offensive: Chris Johnson
"Dash" was our leading rusher: 24 attempts for 89 yards with a touchdown; and leading receiver: 6 catches for 72 yards. I'm starting to think that this kid is pretty good. He looked better as the game went on, always a great sign for a Titan running back. He has a 4.9 rushing average for the season and he continues to lead the AFC in rushing (as well as all rookies). We haven't seen a rookie make this big of an impact since... well I'm not even g...

I've been meaning to do this all season long, but we finally got enough quotes to actually make it worth the effort. Before we get in to all of Sunday's worst, we need to listen to Dan Fouts praise Wes Welker.
Late Score Lifts Titans to 5-0 in Topping Ravens 13-10

This week, the Titans and the Ravens renewed their rivalry in Baltimore. The 2-1 Ravens hosted the undefeated 4-0 Titans. Both teams defenses are their strength and the defenders were the ones who made the plays in this game. Another big factor that decided the outcome in today's game was the penalties. There were a total of 21 penalties. The Ravens committed 11 for 91 yards while the Titans lost 78 yards due to penalties.
The Titans first drive looked promising as Collins led his team down the field closer and closer to the red zone. However the opening drive ended when Collins threw an interception. The Ravens marched down the field easily; primarily due to the 3 yellow flags the Titans received. Baltimore added 3 points to take the lead.
The following drive for the Titans ended with another interception by Collins. Things were looking bleak as Tennessee struggled against the Raven's defense. Things remained back and forth for the next ten minutes until Titans defensive player Michael Griffin got his fourth interception of the year. The Titans tied the game up in 4 plays with a field goal by Rob Bironas. The score remained the same until halftime.

Things looked very bad for the Titans on the Ravens first drive of the second half. The Ravens looked perfect as they drew a lot of penalties from the Titans. Tennessee got an unnecessary roughness, personal foul, and encroachment foul on them. The errors led to a Baltimore touchdown and an angered Titans defense. Albert Haynesworth has been known for losing his temper in the past, and he lost it again at the end of that drive. After the extra point, Haynesworth got an unnecessary roughness call.
Titans Coach Jeff Fisher collected the entire defense on the sideline and gave them a motivational speech. This speech must have worked, because Tennessee didn't give up any more points for the rest of the game. The Titans offense worked with great field position for the rest of the game. They added a field goal and then a touchdown to take the lead. The Ravens had won more shot to win the game with a two-minute drive. But on the second play of their final drive Titans CB Nick Harper intercepted the ball and gave the Titans their fifth win of the season.
The Titans move to 5-0 while the Ravens slip to 2-2. The Titans get to rest next week as they get their bye. They will be back in Nashville on October 19th to battle the Kansas City Chiefs. Although the win wasn?t a pretty won, the Titans have continued to get the job the done and right now are the best team in the entire NFL.

Collins in record books as Titans win

The Houston Texans (0,1) traveled to LP Field in Nashville this Sunday to take on the undefeated Tennessee Titans (2-0). The Texans have not defeated the Titans in the past 6 times the two teams have met.? Today marks the first game the Texans have played since Hurricane Ike hit their city last week.? The Texans look to provide hope to a struggling city with a win over the Titans this week.? Meanwhile, Tennessee looks to continue their undefeated streak and maintain their spot at the top of the AFC South.

On the first play of the game, Titans QB Kerry Collins threw an interception.? The Texans capitalized on this costly turnover and got an easy field goal. Redeeming himself for the way he opened the game, Collins led the Titans down the field on the next drive with 51 passing yards and a 12 yard rush. Lendale White punched in the touchdown on 4th and 1 from the Houston 2.
On the first play of the Texans second drive, Michael Griffin intercepted the ball. However the ball was given back to the Texans in the next couple plays as Justin Mcariens fumbled the ball after a catch.? The Texans again capitalized on the Tennessee turnover by adding another three points on their next drive.?The Titans then answered back with 7 more points after Collins led another spectacular drive that ended in a 9 yard touchdown pass to TE Bo Scaife. There were two drives for both the Titans and Texans in the second quarter. They were very similar as both teams had a mix of runs and passes. Both teams took their time and worked their way down the field. Both drives ended in rushing touchdowns. Lendale White scored his second TD of the day while Steve Slaton ran it in for the Texans. The half ended with the Titans leading 21-12.

The third quarter was a battle of defensive stands. Both teams defenses eliminated the big gain plays that were constant in the first two quarters. The only points scored in the 3rd quarter was a field goal by pro-bowl kicker Rob Bironas.

The fourth quarter consisted of the Titans taking whatever the Texans defense would give them. They played this quarter very conservative and ran down the clock as much as they could.? The Texans two chances to get back into the game were abruptly ended by interceptions. Their first drive ended when Matt Schaub threw his second interception to Griffin.? Houston's second (and last) drive was ended when CB Cortland Finnegan intercepted the ball and returned it 99 yards for another Titans touchdown.? This interception sealed the game and gave the Tennessee Titans a 31-12 win.

The Titans continued their winning streak and stay at the top of the AFC South as they are now 3-0. The Titans offense looked very good this week.? Kerry Collins led the team going 14/26 for 189 yards with 1 touchdown. Tennessee ran for over 150 yards with Lendale White scoring 2 touchdowns on the ground. The Titans stellar defense once again showed why they are among one of the best in the NFL. They finished with 3 interceptions, 3 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. Tennessee looked extremely well today as both the offense and the defense did their job.? The 3-0 Titans will look to extend their winning streak next week when the Minnesota Vikings come to LP field. With the way the Titans are playing, I think 4-0 is definitely possible.

Does Paul Kuharsky read this blog?

Of course he doesn't, but he did write a nice piece about Titans' cornerback Cortland Finnegan for ESPN this afternoon. If you read our Team Preview for Yardbarker, you'll know that we picked Finnegan as our "Breakout Player" for this season. And after another solid off-season, all signs point to him

Will the 2008 Titan draft class produce immediately?

Outside of S/CB Michael Griffin, the 2007 Tennessee Titan draft class failed to consistently yield positive results during their rookie seasons.

In year two of the Mike Reinfeldt regime, the Titans could use some better first-year production from this year's draft picks. Let's take a look at each of the 2008 draftees' chances of contributing as rookies.

Titans offseason positional review - cornerbacks

Before the 2007 season started Titans fans had plenty to worry about at cornerback. So did Titans management, which used their first-round draft pick on a safety who they hoped could play corner for them.

After the season started, however, a pair of corners were playing well enough for Michael Griffin to move back to safety, where it appears he's found a permanent home.

Here's the outlook on the corners currently on the roster...

Great Camp

When I walked into the Titans facility on Thursday it finally sunk in that I'm in the NFL and this is my job now. It was pretty weird, but people actually knew who I was when I got off the plane and started walking through the airport in Nashville. It was really cool hearing people already rooting for me and welcoming me to Nashville. I couldn't wait to get to work.

I jumped on a shuttle to the facility and went with all the other players to get our physicals. I was pretty pumped to see they signed Biren Ealy as a free agent. We were teammates at Arizona before he transfered to the University of Houston. He's a really good wide receiver and it was really cool to be reunited with him.

I couldn't wait to get to work and they put us to work pretty much right away. The camp was just for rookies and guys trying out so we got a lot of reps. I was rooming with Michael Griffin, our first round draft choice out of Texas. He's a great guy. We had a 6:30 wake up call and were over to the facility by 7:00 for morning meetings. We hit the field after that. We learned five or six plays the first day and three or four after that.

Practice was roughly an hour and 45 minutes. We had only three running backs in camp, Danny Ware from Georgia and Nic Luke from Alabama A&M. It was a three man rotation so we got a lot of reps. We caught a lot of balls, went one on one with the linebackers and ran some 7 on 7. We were working right off the bat. I loved it and learned a lot.

The playbook is very extensive so I have a lot of studying to do. Getting comfortable with the playbook is the biggest hurdle at this point. One thing Coach Chow said was he wants me to be doing everything at full speed, even if I run the wrong way on a play he wants me to do it full speed. Once I get comfortable with the plays the possibilities are endless.

I didn't get to enjoy Nashville this time around. When I wasn't at practice or in meetings I was asleep at the hotel. Hopefully I can get some fishing in next time I am in town. That is definitely the plan. I know they have a lot of lakes and I heard they have one of the biggest bass fishing shops in the country. Fishing will definitely be a priority when I'm back in town. Football comes first, but I have to get some fishing in.
