What the Cardinals can take from the Yankees, besides the luxury tax

First, some briefs on yesterday's roster moves:
It's interesting to see the Brad Thompson perception gap—the RotoWorld box in the sidebar thinks he'll have no problem finding a job, even as a fifth starter; the Baseball Primer thread is remarkably positive, for BTF. But I think the average VEBer wrote off the artist occasionally known as WonderBrad a long time ago.
I'll always think of him as a better pitcher than he probably was and is; I'm as...

Bill James and Pitchers

I think we, as a community of worriers, are relatively pat about the offense—if anything bad were to happen, be it Pujols missing a chunk of time; Rasmus continuing to be Ramos; or the Cardinals seriously going into the 2010 season with Skip Schumaker and Allen Craig dueling for the chance to be the team's fourth best hitter, it would come as a terrible shock.
But the pitchers... well, they were too good last year. I am expecting any and all things to happen this year to mak...

I missed most of yesterday's game, for a variety of reasons, and when I left the Cardinals had their narrow lead. So I was happy to learn, when I finally checked the box score, that it wasn't the bullpen that messed things up (and happier still to learn that it wasn't altogether Smoltz's fault, either.)&nb...

Right handed relief

First of all, I apologize for yesterday. My computer was basically inoperable as I spent most of the day trying to remove viruses, worms, Trojan horses, spyware, netware, adware, and underwear. Between running multiple virus protection programs and all the adware the worm/virus had placed on the computer, I literally couldn’t go from website to website or use Word. I think I’ve finally got it licked, however, so we’re back up and running.

As I’ve mentioned several times, I’m not at al...

I guess they won't be missing Oswalt so much after all. It's amazing how inelastic my subjective idea of this offense has gotten; even after all the acquisitions and the recent Rick Ankiel renaissance, even though I am a basically rational observer of baseball who has never once called into a radio program and hasn't gotten truly angry at a baseball game ...

Motte Set to Be Cards' Closer

Despite Tony LaRussa's demurrals on the question of naming a Cardinals closer, Jason Motte will open the season as the team's bullpen ace. That's according to Al Hrabosky, a Cardinals closer himself - "the Mad Hungarian" - back in the 1970s and since then a longtime Cardinals broadcaster.LaRussa told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch several days ago that he would not name a closer entering the 2009 season. However, during the pre-game show of the Twins-Cardinals Spring Traini...

Because KLaw’s comments went over so well, let’s toss some more fuel on the fire:
psugator01 (Coral Springs, Fla.): Is there anything about Jason Motte’s mechanics that would prevent the Cardinals from naming him their closer?
Kevin Goldstein: I’m not sure I have something against his mechanics, it’s just a bit weird because the second he [...]
