Trend Spotting: Nick Swisher’s stability and Perez stumbles

While Nick Swisher’s ebullient smile and incessant on-field/in dugout antics have endeared him to Indians fans as fast as one would expect; Swisher’s on field performance has been somewhat underrated with the stability of production he offers. Perhaps Nick’s offensive flat line has made him a relatively valuable yet ignorable feature of this offense to date but I promise that will not be the norm.
When Swisher is in the lineup (40 of the Tribe's 46 games to date) he has offered much needed stability and gone relatively unnoticed as different guys like Mark Reynolds, Carlos Santana and recentlyJason Kipnis have gone nuclear, carrying the Indians offense for weeklong stretches (In Reynolds' case longer stretches). Perhaps, Swisher’s inconspicuousness to date - at least in terms of offensive praise - is the perfect world scenario for the Indians.
Swisher totes twelve doubles, six home runs, sixteen runs batted in and a pretty slash line of .274/.382/.493. These numbers denote a...

Indians closer Perez leaves Twitter

Indians closer Chris Perez has deactivated his Twitter account following two rough outings.

Perez took down @chrisperez54 on Monday, shortly after he gave up a ninth-inning home run to Seattle's Endy Chavez. It was the second straight poor performance by Perez, who allowed back-to-back homers in the ninth on Saturday.

Several fans sent Perez negative comments following Monday's game.

In a statement released by the team, the two-time All-Star didn't say why he was deactivating his account, but that it ''was a personal choice I made in order to maintain the greater focus on the success of the team this season and on our shared goals moving forward.''

Perez became a target for some fans when he criticized them for not supporting the Indians.

Chris Perez: “I want to minimize any potential off-the-field distraction”

Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez released an official statement following the much-discussed deactivation of his Twitter account.
“The decision to deactivate my Twitter account was a personal choice I made in order to maintain the greater focus on the success of the team this season and our shared goals moving forward.
We have an extremely positive and supportive group of players, coaches and staff members in our clubhouse and I want to participate in activities and routines that contribute positively to the culture we’re building here.
Out of respect for my teammates, I want to minimize any potential off-the-field distractions so this is the only time I will comment on this topic. Thank you for your understanding.”
Perez deleted his account following Cleveland’s 9-7 win over the Seattle Mariners on Monday afternoon. The two-time All-Star allowed his third home run in two consecutive outings which led to a slew of personal attacks via the microblogging platform.

Chris Perez deletes his Twitter account following rough outings

Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez is one of the more emotional players in baseball. There are times when his emotions get the best of him, but his fiery personality has made him one of the better relievers in baseball over the past few seasons. That being said, Twitter is not always the best place for someone who is clearly bothered by the things fans say to him.
On Saturday, Perez blew a save against the Seattle Mariners but ended up getting the win after his teammates bailed him out. He then gave up a solo home run in the ninth inning of a tie game against Seattle on Monday, but Cleveland went on to win in extra innings. Following that outing, Perez disappeared from Twitter.
As Pat McManamon of FOX Sports Ohio pointed out, Perez was blasted on Twitter all weekend following his sub-par performances. Followers hurled all the usual “I can say this because I’m hiding behind a computer” insults his way before Perez had apparently had enough.
Perez is not the first noteworthy athlete...

Perez deletes Twitter account after verbal attacks

Score one for the haters.
The Twitter account for closer Chris Perez was no longer active Monday night. Perez, one of the more accessible and open Indians players, apparently had enough ugliness.
Perez was villified on Twitter immediately after giving up a solo home run in the ninth inning of Mondays 10-8 win. Perez had blown a save on Saturday after giving up two solo home runs in the ninth. The Indians won both games.
Evidently that didnt matter to the Twitter boors, who let Perez have it in no uncertain terms. He was villified in profane and ugly ways even though Vinnie Pestano and Joe Smith both gave up home runs as well.

MLB News: Indians closer Chris Perez deletes his Twitter account

Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez has had enough. Following Monday afternoon’s extra-innings win against the Seattle Mariners, thus completing a four-game sweep at Progressive Field, Perez deleted his Twitter account largely in part to the barrage of hate-laced tweets being sent his way.

Perez, a two-time All-Star with the Indians, has become a bit of a target on the microblogging platform following his comments last season regarding fan support. On Tuesday afternoon, Perez gave up his third home run in what was his last two outings, forcing the Indians to come from behind via the heroics of reserve catcher Yan Gomes.
When Perez allowed two home runs this past weekend, he tweeted out that one of the most useful tools on Twitter was the “block” feature that allows him to not receive messages from select fans. On Tuesday, the closer seemingly had enough of the tasteless barbs being thrown his way, oftentimes anonymously.
Despite saving 90 percent of his chances (81-for-91) since b...

Indians' Chris Perez dealing with shoulder stiffness

Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez was unavailable to pitch yesterday after he complained of stiffness in his throwing shoulder. The right-hander told reporters -- including Jordan Bastian of MLB.com -- that the move was precautionary, as he expects to be available for today's series opener against the New York Yankees.

"Missing a day here is better than missing two
months," Perez said after the game. "I might've pitched in the past.
... I always want to pitch. I always want to be up. But I felt a little better
today knowing we have good arms down there."

Perez experienced the discomfort in his arm while warming up during the top of the ninth inning of yesterday's contest. He reported the ailment to bullpen coach Kevin Cash, who relayed the message to manager Terry Francona. The skipper elected to go with relievers Rich Hill and Cody Allen, allowing Perez's nagging arm to rest.

The previous night, Perez logged 22 pitches dur...

MLB News: Indians’ All-Star closer Chris Perez tweets he is ready to return

Cleveland Indians All-Star closer Chris Perez tweeted that he will be ready for the team’s Opening Day contest against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Great to get out there again. If the season started next week, I’d be ready. What’s that?It does start next week? #Ready #BullpenMafia

In one inning of a rehabilitation game against the Dodgers’ High-A club on Saturday, Perez through 30 pitches, 19 for strikes, allowing two hits and a walk with a strikeout. Six batters were faced, one scored.
Perez has missed the last several weeks with a shoulder injury that caused him to miss the World Baseball Classic. Originally considered to be an issue that could linger into the start of the 2013 season, Perez appears to be ready to lock down the back of the Tribe bullpen that could hold as many as eight players come Opening Day.

MLB News: Indians’ Chris Perez decided to not pitch in WBC

While the Cleveland Indians started a rumor and conspiracy firestorm on Friday with their handling of All-Star closer Chris Perez’ injury, it turns out that the pitcher was the one who decided on skipping the impending World Baseball Classic — it was not a team-directed mandate.
Per The Plain Dealer’s Bud Shaw, Perez, suffering from pain in his throwing shoulder, told manager Terry Francona that he should not go forward with pitching in the global display.
“I said, ‘What do you want to do?’” Francona state. “He said, ‘I don’t think I should pitch in the World Baseball Classic.’ I said, ‘OK, that sounds fair enough.’ I was ready for him to say, ‘Hey let’s give it a couple days.’ But he said, ‘I probably shouldn’t do that. I like what we’re doing here. I want to be a part of this.’ I was happy to hear that.”
When leaving the facility on Friday, Perez seemed visibly upset, but this appears to be out of frustration rather than petulance. Perez, in turn, will be shut down

Indians closer rips ownership, GM

If any one of us in the real world were to publicly go off on our bosses, we'd be fired that very day with no questions asked and likely blackballed from the industry in which you worked. After all, nobody wants to hire someone with a reputation for undermining the very people who sign the checks at the end of the day. If you're a professional baseball player, particularly a pitcher with more than a modicum of talent, you'll receive a slap on the wrist. Sure you might receive a pink slip, but there's undoubtedly another (and potentially better) job awaiting you. Chris Perez becomes the latest example of this with his recent tirade against Indians management. Perez, who has admittedly never been known for being a wallflower, unleashed the second most controversial rant of Wednesday with this tirade against Indians ownership. Take it away, CBSSports.com: "It's not just ownership," Perez said. "They don't make trades. It's the GMs. It goes h...

Perez questions Cleveland fans

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Cleveland Indians All-Star closer Chris Perez voiced his concern with the overall psyche of the Cleveland sports fan. This time, not just with regard to attendance as much as welfare and the other two sports which share this very city, specifically the animosity toward former Cavalier LeBron James.
“I don’t get the psyche,” said Perez. “Why cheer against a guy that’s not even in your city anymore? Just to see him fail? Does that make you feel good? I could see if the Cavs were in the championship, but that’s their mentality.
“They’ve had a lot of years of misery. They say, ‘You just don’t understand because you don’t live here.’ O.K., maybe I don’t. But that doesn’t mean it has to keep going.”
In addition, Perez called into question the rabid blind loyalty surrounding the Browns, a team having made the playoffs once since returning in 1999 and not had a record above .500 since their 10-win season in 2007, and very little support i

Indians' closer throws up after save

Pop quiz: Who leads MLB in saves right now? I could have also asked who is the closer for the Indians but we gave that away in the article title.
I am guessing Chris Perez has flown under the radar to many sports fans and our readers. A quick crash course in all things Chris Perez should include that he was an All Star last year, 4th in saves in 2011, and was the guy who called out Cleveland fans for not coming out to see the Indians when they were in first place. But after today, I think Perez's name might ring out with a bit more staying power as he's know the guy who yacks when he pitches. Apparently this isn't the first time either. Below is the video at least until the stodgy new media gestapo at MLB has a stroke and calls youtube crying.

I guess credit to the Indian's booth for just continuing on with the game recap. Thinks like people puking for me personally is usually a "stop what you're doing" type of event, but these are r...

Indians closer rips team's fans

As is his wont, Chris Perez shot off in the locker room after the Indians 2-0 win over the Marlins on Saturday. Only this time he wasn’t getting into tussles on Twitter or with the opponents. Perez ripped the Cleveland fans, saying they don’t show up and the lack of support has hurt the organization’s pursuit of free agents. He specifically cited the club’s attempt to sign Carlos Beltran this offseason, saying the low attendance and support were a factor in Beltran choosing the Cardinals over the Tribe.
The Elyria Chronicle-Telegram’s Chris Assenheimer tweeted Perez’s comments from the clubhouse after the game:

Perez rips fans for not showing up and for booing him during his last outing two days ago against Mariners.

He went into specifics, and as noted above, said the lack of support hurts the club in free agency:

Perez says one of the reasons free agents don’t want to sign with Cleveland is because of lack of fan suppor...
