Back on the Job

The All-Star break was last week, but several players are finally getting back to work. Troy Percival and J.J. Putz came off the disabled list over the weekend while other closers are having their own injury issues. And what does the presence of Ray Durham in Milwaukee mean for Rickie Weeks?

Mad over Max Scherzer and Barry Zito

Max Scherzer was supposed to help everyone's fantasy baseball team. Mismanagement by Bob Melvin cost us many fantasy owners an arm that just sat on our benches.

Barry Zito is terrible and he should just donate his salary to the War on Terror, it will be better spent there.

Fantasy Rundown: Pedro Returns to the Mound

Pedro Martinez made his return to the Mets a victorious one. He should provide a huge boost to New York, and he can still help your fantasy team. Some other guy named Joba also debuted as a starter, a pitcher not named Smoltz got the save for Atlanta, and another prospect (Radhames Liz) flew under the radar and pitched well for Baltimore.

Rock out with your pitching coach out

I feel like Bob Apodaca must be part of my family, because I've seen more of him in the last few days than I have my wife. Every time I turn around I see Apodaca jogging to and from the mound. Comcast is so good at sponsorship (Jeep Keys to the Game, etc.), just for tonight they should have the Amtrack Apodaca Trip to the Mound...

Taking two easy ones from the team that swept the Phils from the '07 playoffs has been sweet, but it is sort of sad to see the state of the Rockies right now. Without Holliday, Hawpe or Tulowitzki, the Rockies lineup is straight out of the Pacific Coast League. Combine that with a young staff and an overworked bullpen and the Rockies are as tough to watch as those horrid Sheetz poetry jam coffee comercials.
-------------------------
I Will Wait No Longer
For whatever reason, I'm picking today to be impatient. R.J. Swindle needs to be in the Phillies bullpen. Tonight. I'm sure Clay Condrey is a nice guy, but if he needs to go to make room for the Great Rock-n-Roll Swindle, then c'est la vie Condrey. The Phils, like many other teams in the league, are perpetually looking for bullpen help. Yet, they have a guy carrying a sub-1 ERA and a 27 to 2 K:BB ratio sitting in the FeHams bullpen. They don't have to worry about burning options or accumulating service time or any of that. The biggest risk is losing Condrey and I think that is a risk worth taking since the potential reward is adding a useful lefty reliever to the 'pen.
------------------------
Sweep Vitals
The Phils hand the ball to Gavin Eaton. He sucks. The Rockies counter with Greg Reynolds, the second overall pick in the 2006 draft. [Some pitchers taken after Reynolds that year: Andrew Miller, Tim Lincecum, Clayton Kershaw, Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy and Max Scherzer.] This will be the fourth career major league start for Reynolds, racking up a loss, two no decisions and a 4.06 ERA in his first three starts. First pitch is 7:05, hot dogs are full price.

Joba Chamberlain versus Max Scherzer

So it's our second player versus player challenge and after your overwhelmingly positive response to our last poll, we thought we would stick with the baseball theme but move to the mound this time with two guys who are up and coming baseball stars. Joba Chamerlain versus Max Scherzer

Cancer cant keep Davis down

In some good injury news, Doug Davis made his first rehab start since being diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Davis had surgery less then a month ago to remove the cancerous thyroid and just last week received a radiation iodine treatment. Arizona Diamondbacks officials expect him to rejoin the team within 10-14 days.

Max Scherzer: Snake Eyes

I was watching the Arizona Diamondbacks-Chicago Cubs game this afternoon, and the commentators brought up a certain fun fact about Arizona rookie pitcher, Max Scherzer. Dude has a condition called heterochromia - he has a blue eye and a brown eye. I don't know what's scarier for a hitter - seeing a guy with different color eyes staring you down, or his 98 mph heater.

Moyer Pitches, Hits as Phillies Roll Over D'backs

Phillies veteran lefthander Jamie Moyer threw seven fine innings, giving up only 2 runs while spreading 6 hits but that was by no means the whole story. He had 2 hits, one of them a run scoring double to cap a 4 run third inning as the Phils pounded rookie Max Scherzer and the Arizona Diamondbacks by an 11-4 score.

Scherzer, with his 98 mph fastball, was rocked in his starting debut as the Phils scored a single run in the first inning on 1st baseman Ryan Howard's sacrifice fly RBI and scored 4 more in the third as the Phils sent 9 men to the plate including Moyer who doubled in the 4th run of the inning. Having thrown 92 pitches in 4 innings, Scherzer, who was charged with the loss, was replaced by Edgar Gonzalez to open the fifth inning.

45 year-old Moyer schools 23 year-old Scherzer in Phillies win

Max Scherzer of the Arizona Diamondbacks was two years old when Jamie Moyer made his major league debut back in 1986. Scherzer made his first career start tonight and Moyer, with his 21 years of experience, schooled the rookie, leading the Phillies to a 11-4 win over the D-backs.

Moyer put together one of his better performances of the season, going 7 innings and scattering 6 hits. He struck out 5 D-backs and gave up only 2 runs. At one point, he sent down 10 hitters down in a row. Moyer also showed some prowess with the bat, going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. He even dropped down a good bunt to advance the runners in the 7th inning.
