Twins Sunday: Swarzak in, Robertson out

The roster moves continued for the Minnesota Twins on Sunday morning, as right-hander Anthony Swarzak was activated from the 15-day disabled list. Swarzak missed the start of the season after fracturing his ribs in an off-the-field incident in late January.

Swarzak, 27, has spent three seasons in the majors with Minnesota and pitched in a career-high 44 games last season, including five games as a spot starter. He had a 5.03 ERA with 62 strikeouts and 31 walks in 96-23 innings. Because of his rib injury, Swarzak did not appear in a Grapefruit League game this spring. He'll be used out of the bullpen with the Twins.

Additionally, left-hander Tyler Robertson was optioned to Triple-A Rochester following Saturday's win in Baltimore. The 25-year-old lefthander pitched in two games so far this season and allowed just one run but gave up a grand slam in relief Friday on the first pitch to Chris Davis in the Twins' 9-5 loss. Robertson entered the game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth in

Twins send Diamond, Swarzak to disabled list

The Minnesota Twins announced on Friday that they have placed pitchers Scott Diamond and Anthony Swarzak on the 15-day disabled list.
Diamond, who was Minnesotas best starting pitcher in 2012, has been rehabbing his left elbow after having offseason surgery in December. He has yet to pitch in an official Grapefruit League game this spring. When Diamond returns from the DL possibly in April hes expected to slide into the rotation. He was 12-9 with a 3.54 ERA in 27 starts last year.
Swarzak injured his ribs during a non-baseball related activity in late January. Like Diamond, he has yet to pitch in a spring training game this year. He appeared in 44 games last season, mostly in relief. Swarzak is pegged to return to the Twins bullpen again this season.
The Twins also optioned outfielder Joe Benson and pitcher Pedro Hernandez to Triple-A Rochester on Friday. Benson was a candidate to earn a spot on the 25-man roster as Minnesotas center fielder, but he was beat out by Aaron Hicks. In 18 spring training games,

Twins Reliever Anthony Swarzak Fractures Two Ribs, Out for a Month After ‘Horseplay’ With Teammates

Teams account for injuries during the season, but the Minnesota Twins didn’t expect to be shorthanded prior to the beginning of spring training. Right-handed pitcher Anthony Swarzak is now expected to miss a month after fracturing two ribs in January.
Swarzak wasn’t exactly lifting weights or running drills when the injury occurred — instead, he was trying his hand at another sport. Twins general manager Terry Ryan said Swarzak was wrestling with his teammates when the fateful injury happened.
“When he was up here for TwinsFest, he was messing around with a couple guys and cracked a couple ribs, so he’ll be out a month,” Ryan said. “He was wrestling around. It was some horseplay. He was out with a couple friends and the team and cracked a couple ribs fooling around. It wasn’t a fight or anything. It was just bad judgment wrestling around.”
The injury doesn’t come at the best time, as pitchers and catchers are set to report Tuesday to the team’s spring training complex in Fort Myers,...

Twins Injury News: Anthony Swarzak suffered fractured rib

Offseason shenanigans can lead to injuries. Players have proven this throughout the history of baseball, and Anthony Swarzak is no exception. The Minnesota Twins will not have their 27-year old pitcher in camp for at least a month as he recovers from a fractured rib. The injury was apparently suffered at the Twins' fan fest.

Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com had the early report of the injury.

Swarzak injured his ribs in a non-baseball activity on Jan. 25 and is expected to be out a month. #MNTwins

It was later confirmed that Swarzak had suffered a rib fracture and would miss about a month. The injury should not set him back too much in his preparation for the 2013 season, but it is disappointing. Swarzak needs all the time he can get in camp to get his career on track.

So far in his Major League career, Swarzak has a 5.03 ERA in 83 games-pitched. He has never developed into the player the Twins thought he woul...

Twins: Swarzak has cracked ribs -- from wrestling

Minnesota Twins pitcher Anthony Swarzak has two cracked ribs, the freak result of some ill-fated horseplay during a gathering with teammates last month.

Swarzak will miss at least the first two weeks of spring training, a setback to his bid for a roster spot as a long reliever.

General manager Terry Ryan said Wednesday that Swarzak was hurt the night of Jan. 25 when he was wrestling with other unnamed Twins. They were together that weekend for the team's annual fan festival.

Swarzak felt soreness on his left side that didn't go away, and he was recently diagnosed with the fractures. Ryan says the 27-year-old right-hander was not in a fight.

Ryan says he's disappointed with the injury but he's appreciative Swarzak didn't try to hide it.

Twins RHP Swarzak makes fifth start of season

Minnesota's Anthony Swarzak hadn't made a start since late May, but with the Twins running out of options, the right-hander got the call to start Tuesday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Tuesday's start originally belonged to right-hander Samuel Deduno, but Deduno was skipped in his final start of the 2012 season due to eye inflammation. Swarzak had made four starts early in the season, but otherwise was used out of the bullpen (39 relief appearances).

After giving up four runs in five innings, Swarzak was hit with the loss as the Twins fell 4-3 to the Blue Jays in the penultimate game of 2012. The four runs allowed by Swarzak came on five Toronto hits. He also walked three batters while striking out two.

Swarzak retired the first six Toronto batters he faced Tuesday, but gave up a leadoff hit to Adeiny Hechavarria in the third inning. Hechavarria pulled the first pitch from Swarzak down the left field line for a double to the corner. He then advanced to third base on a groundout by Mo

Twins reactivate pitcher Swarzak

MINNEAPOLIS The Minnesota Twins made a few roster moves after Wednesday's game, optioning pitchers Jeff Manship and Luis Perdomo to Triple-A Rochester. Minnesota will activate right-hander Anthony Swarzak from the 15-day disabled list and will make one more corresponding roster move before Friday's game in Seattle. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said the corresponding move will be to bring a position player up from Rochester, giving Minnesota another option off the bench.Swarzak was on the DL with a mild rotator cuff strain in his right shoulder. He last pitched on July 24 against Chicago. In 31 appearances this season (69 innings), Swarzak has a 4.43 ERA with 46 strikeouts and 19 walks.Manship pitched in Wednesday's game against Detroit, throwing three scoreless innings while striking out two. He lowered his ERA to 7.89 on the season. Perdomo appeared in just five games for the Twins, giving up three runs (one earned) in six innings of relief.Follow Tyler Mason on Twitter.

Swarzak gets start to open Detroit series

It might still be relatively early in the season, but the Detroit Tigers are clearly frustrated with their play.

A trip to Target Field might help get them going in a positive direction.

After being swept by the AL Central leaders, the Tigers hope for a turnaround Friday night as they try to continue their recent road success against the last-place Minnesota Twins.

The preseason favorite to repeat as Central champion, Detroit (20-24) won nine of its first 12 games but is 11-21 since. The third-place Tigers totaled six runs while dropping all three games at Cleveland this week to fall six games behind the division-leading Indians.

"I think there's a little tension," said Detroit ace Justin Verlander, who went eight innings but took the loss in Thursday's 2-1 defeat. "I think we're all feeling that way. Emotions run high.

"You can only say it's early for so long. We've got to get it turned around."

They could start by producing more consistently at the plate.
