The Other Ones: Phils Try to Win For More Than 8 Innings in Double-Header Against Mets

The Phillies have had a nice, season-long run of being the only game in town--aided of course by first-round playoff exits by the Sixers and Flyers--but now the jig is up. The Eagles are back in town, and until October rolls around to really give people a reason to pay attention (assuming, hopefully, that they don't make things too interesting before that), the Phils are likely gonna have to take the back seat amongst the Phaithful to the Green and White.

When Colorado and the LA Angels last met in 2006, Jose Mesa blew the first game of the series, but the Rox bounced back to take the next two and stayed above .500 for the season. (via mlbnetwork.mlb.com)

Baseball According to Chris Wheeler

According to Chris Wheeler preserving a lead in the 9th inning is difficult; in his words, "closing is tough." He continually blurts this mindless crap over and over again as Phils fans endure numerous blown saves by Brad Lidge and now Ryan Madson. If closing is so damn tricky, then please tell me how Jose Mesa has 321 career saves. Shut the f*ck up Wheels!Phillies are now 1-7 during the homestand, and have lost 5 straight. There's no positive spin to put on things right now bec...

The KG Asterick, Or Reason #8,234 Why The World Loves Boston Injuries

Oh, the things I do for you, dear reader. It's taking years off my life, this exposure to such unabashed and unblinking douche- baggery. It's also speaks to the workday's length and my interest in cultivating a low level of rage to help me get through it. Which is all a roundabout way of getting to the point of yet another Bill "Bad Tooth" Simmons podcast on the World Wide Lemur page, in which we learn that if Kevin Garnett can't play in this playoff, as head coach D...

Marlins Acquire Rhodes, Become Worse Team

The Florida Marlins were on the verge of acquiring future Hall of Fame outfielder Manny Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox before Thursday's trade deadline, but Ramirez ended up with the Dodgers instead. As a consolation prize, the Marlins traded for journeyman reliever, and former Phillies, Arthur Rhodes, from the Seattle Mariners for minor league pitcher Gaby Hernandez.

Not only did the Marlins not get better by getting Manny, but they actually got worse by acquiring Rhodes. Most Phillies' fans look back on the year Rhodes spent in Philadelphia with mild disgust. Rhodes went 0-5 with a 5.32 ERA and three blown saves.

Rhodes was just another in a long line of Roberto Hernandez's, Antonio Alfonseca's, and Jose Mesa's (although, admittedly, I had a secret crush on Mesa for his blue and red gloves and his english name, Joe Table), veteran journeyman relievers that were supposed to come here and provide some stability and veteran leadership in the bullpen. Instead they came and just plain stunk.

Miraculously, after undergoing Tommy John Surgery last year, Rhodes returned for his 17th major league season and is 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA in 22 innings. But that was with Seattle, where it didn't matter because they are the only team currently competing with the Washington Nationals for the Worst Team In The Majors Award.

Now Rhodes is in a pressure situation, with the Marlins just one and a half games back of the Phillies, who are in first place in the National League East, a game ahead of the New York Mets. Rhodes is going to be expected to pitch well, like he was expected to in 2006, and we all remember how that went.

Way to go Marlins, way to go.

Scouting Report on Jose Ceda

ose Ceda
6?5
230lbs
R/R
1/28/1987

Once in blue moon minor deadline deals involving role players for low level high ceiling prospects pan out. Right now the midseason 2006 season deal with the Padres, exchanging Todd Walker for a 19 year old rookie flamethrower Jose Ceda, is looking like a steal. The Padres got a half season of Walker, while Ceda has excelled through the Cubs' organization. A Cubs' scout had spotted Ceda as a potential low buy back in 2005 during the Padres' Instructional League; he loved Ceda's velocity and size. The Padres were willing deal Jose because they felt he was a player tabbed with huge potential but poor work ethic and was suited for the bullpen. For a more in-depth Scouting Report on Ceda read on?.

Enough with Jose Mesa already.......

Let's see Pat Gilick, you have a 40 man roster, three levels of minor leagues (not counting rookie A ball teams), and a fan favorite player in AA Reading who hit over .300 last year for the big club. Yet, we the Philadelphia Phillies fans get to read our local paper's transaction wire to see that we re-acquired Jose Mesa with an open roster spot? What is wrong here? No Chris Coste for a bench that continues to lack guys who can do multiple things (Coste plays C, 1B, 3B, and OF)?

Mesa, whose real age is actually a mystery (somewhere between 41-47), and his lofty 12.00 ERA, was waived by the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers biggest problem this year in duplicating last years success, has been their horrible bullpen. So naturally we sign him to help out ours?
