Daily Fantasy Baseball Primer for 5/22/13

The following list is tailored toward fantasy baseball players that compete in wildly popular daily fantasy games on sites like Fanduel, Draftday and Draftstreet.
Recommendations are based on previous history, current streaks, and advantageous match ups against underperforming pitchers.

Night Games for 5/22/13

Pitcher
High Dollar Play: Justin Verlander vs. Indians

Verlander is coming off one of the worst starts of his career and will be looking to rebound. The Indians are the 9th worst team when it comes to strikeouts.

Low Dollar Upside Play: Burch Smith vs. Cardinals

8 K’s in 5.1 innings in first start of the year. Long shot, but K rate is appealing.

Catcher
High Dollar Play: Matt Wieters vs. Yankees

Wieters has been struggling lately and is due to breakout. Just 3 hits in his last 7 games.

Low Dollar Upside Play: Nick Hundley vs. Cardinals

Decent match up at home against Tyler Lyons, who is making his first start of the year.

First Base
High Dollar Play: Billy B...

Matt Wieters Is Good At Baseball

The other day on the radio, I heard some argument as to whether or not the Orioles should sign Matt Wieters to a $10 M a year contract. The part that got me was that even the people in favor seemed to assume that Wieters would take such a deal. When I expressed that idea, I received a fair bit of push-back - it seems like people don't think that Wieters is actually that good. These people are mistaken.

The bar for offense at the catcher postilion is not very high. The bar for offense at the catcher position is really not very high when said catcher also saves you upwards of 10 runs a season with the glove. Therefore even a league-average hitter is going to be quite valuable (in the neighborhood of 3-3.5 wins above replacement), if he's also a plus defensive catcher. Such a player, if he were a free agent now, might be expected to sign for something like $15 M a year (with the influx of money into the sport recently driving up salaries it seems).

	So, is Matt Wieters s...

Wieters carries Orioles over Royals 4-3

BALTIMORE (AP) Matt Wieters drove in three runs, including the tiebreaker in the eighth inning, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 Tuesday night on a soggy night at Camden Yards.

After blowing a three-run lead, the Orioles went back on top in the eighth. Adam Jones drew a leadoff walk from Tim Collins (1-1) and advanced when Luke Hochevar threw wildly to first base on a pickoff attempt. Wieters then lofted an opposite-field fly to left that landed just inside the foul line for a double.

Tommy Hunter (2-1) worked 1 1-3 innings of relief and Jim Johnson got three straight outs for his 12th save.

It was the fourth win in five games for the Orioles, who moved within a game of first-place Boston in the AL East.

The Seattle Mariners don’t often play a good brand of baseball. And with the fences at Safeco Field 500 feet away from home plate, home runs aren’t fewer and farther between than most other Major League parks.
On Monday, Orioles catcher Matt Wieters ran into one against Mariners starter Joe Saunders. The ball sailed over the left field wall and caromed off the scoreboard behind a few rows of fans.
Notice the poor sap in the blue hood. And then notice how far the ball bounces off his dome.
Wake up, McFly.

Matt Wieters avoids pieing attempts after walk-off grand slam (video/GIF)

When Matt Wieters does walk-off, game-winning hits, he apparently likes to do it with some panache. When the Baltimore Orioles catcher was presented with the bases loaded and nobody out in the bottom of the tenth inning in a 6-6 ballgame against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night, Wieters didn’t settle with looping a soft base hit over the head of the infield loaded with five Rays players, or, heaven forbid, delivering a game-winning sacrifice fly. Nope, that’s not in Wieter’s DNA.
Instead, he blasted a mammoth, bases-clearing grand slam to lead the Orioles to a thrilling 10-6 victory.
And as Wieters didn’t go halfway in his bid to win the game, neither did his teammates when attempting to give him an old-fashioned, traditional and celebratory pieing after the big hit. Nope, again.
He had to withstand and try to evade multiple attempts at pieing.
But did he succeed? That’s the question.
First, the monumental grand slam (via MLB.com):

ICYMI: Wieters With the Walk-Off Grand Salami

Well, you can say that it was dramatic. And while we don't usually post a lot of baseball game highlights, this was pretty cool.

Baltimore Oriole's catcher Matt Wieters lived every young baseball players dream Thursday night. Wieters hit a game winning grand-slam homerun in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead the O's to a 10-6 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Wieters ripped the 1st pitch by Brandon Gomes over the right field wall...and the celebration then ensued.

Well, it is still too early for them too be dubbed legit, but they are on the right track with plays like Matt Wieters dinger that won the game for them over the Rays Thursday night 10-6 in extra innings.

Orioles rumors: Baltimore makes Matt Wieters extension offer

The Baltimore Orioles offered All-Star catcher Matt Wieters a multi-year contract extension recently, but there is no evidence that a deal is "anywhere close" to being reached, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Heyman notes that it's believed that the offer is for at least five years, but the monetary terms remain unknown. He adds that the ceiling for long-term catching contracts was recently raised when the San Francisco Giants signed Buster Posey a nine-year, $167 million extension.

Wieters later told Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun that he isn't familiar with a contract offer from the Orioles. His mind is currently on producing and helping the O's return to the playoffs.

Wieters will earn $5.5 million this season. The two-time Gold Glove Award-winner can reach the free agent market following the 2015 season. The 26-year-old owns a career batting line of .261/.329/.423 over parts of five seasons in the majors.

The best of the AL East

Welcome to our annual series of ‘best player by position’ per division across all of Major League Baseball. Our goal in this set of articles was to set forth the player from each position that is the best in the division right now. No weight was given to a player’s glorious or dubious past. These are our opinions as to who is most likely to represent the division in top-tier form in 2013.
As such, we welcome all feedback, criticism, and (gasp!) praise in the comments section below. Enjoy!
Infield
Catcher – Matt Wieters, Baltimore Orioles – Few catchers ever enter their big league career with as much hype as Wieters did back in 2009. He has delivered to some extent, especially from a power perspective, but O’s fans are hoping there is more in his offensive toolbox. He’s just a .260 hitter lifetime with a weak .328 on-base%. If he could increase those numbers he will be on his way to stardom. Even with some work to be done he is easily the best catcher in this division.

Wieters’ bat and arm help O’s take rubber game from Gnats

After another extremely frustrating seven-plus innings of baseball on Sunday, it looked like the O’s were going to again have their non-existent bats to blame for a loss, and would have to settle for a season split with their neighbors to the south at three games apiece.
Instead, Matt Wieters stepped to the plate in the bottom of the eighth and delivered with a 2-run bomb to the B’More bullpen for the Birds’ only runs of the day, giving them a 2-1 lead.
They would hold on for the win, as Wieters and Jim Johnson completed the always-excited strike-em-out-throw-em-out double play to end it in the following half inning.
The victory gave the O’s the series win and a 4-2 record against the Nationals for 2012. It was the Birds’ 41st victory of the season, which is still good for second place in the American League East, 2.5 games behind the New York Yankees.
That the Birds are still hanging around at the top of the division is quite an accomplishment given their offensive struggles of late. I was going t

Matt Wieters is a cyborg

For the second time this week, Matt Wieters was involved in a collision at the plate, and for the second time, Wieters came out on top.
Unlike in Boston on Sunday though, Tampa infielder Sean Rodriguez really tried to bring the lumber, throwing a forearm shiver to Wieters’ facemask.
If Wieters had dropped the ball Sunday, the Red Sox would have won the game on the play. If he’d dropped it last night, Nick Johnson’s 2-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning would have only tied the game, instead of giving the O’s a 4-3 lead they would not relinquish.
Matt Wieters does not drop the ball.
After the play, Buck Showalter and trainer Richie Bancells came out to check on Matt, who was bleeding from his jaw. If it were me, Rodriguez would have heard some chin music in his next at bat. Apparently that’s not something Buck is down with though, as we saw earlier this week with Josh Hamilton.
Anyway, Matt Wieters. Watch it twice below – the first time on Gary Thorne’s MASN call, and the second time
