Five Red Wings among invitees to Swedish Ice Hockey Federation’s Olympic summer powwow

According to the New York Times' Jeff Z. Klein (via RedWingsFeed), the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation has released the roster of its summer camp for the 2014 Olympics, which will meet from August 12-14 (of this summer) in Stockholm. The roster will meet to discuss Olympic strategies and get on the same game-planning page instead of taking to the ice, and here's the roster includes five Red Wings in Henrik Zetterberg, Johan Franzen, Gustav Nyquist, Jonathan Ericsson and Niklas Kronwall: Continue reading "Five Red Wings among invitees to Swedish Ice Hockey Federation’s Olympic summer powwow"

Upon Further Review, Blackhawks’ Bickell Really Got Rocked In Game 4

I saw the hit which Jonathan Ericsson levied on Bryan Bickell of the Blackhawks happen in real time, and thought is was a big one. Now watching the replay, I realize just how big it was. Bickell is no small man at 6 foot 4 inches and 233 lbs, yet he was reduced to a very small man after taking the check from Ericsson. Check out the replay and you can almost see those little birdies circling around his head as he tries a few times to get to his skates.

Jonathan Ericsson’s big hit on Bryan Bickell made Bickell drunk (VIDEO)

YouTube
Save for Game 1, the Red Wings have mostly had their way with the Blackhawks through the first four games of this Western Conference semifinals series. In Game 4, Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson wanted to drive that point home to Blackhawks forward Bryan Bickell.
Midway through the second period, Bickell tried to chase down a puck in the corner, but ran into an eager Ericsson who turned into a bartender. Ericsson served up a can that put Bickell on his backside – something Niklas Kronwall was proud of. But, the best part of the video wasn’t the hit itself, but rather Bickell’s attempt to skate away from it.
He looked like a drunk fool leaving the bar at 2AM. Hopefully somebody drove him home.

Jonathan Ericsson crushes Bryan Bickell, Bickell struggles to his feet

During the second period of the Detroit Red Wings game four win over the Chicago Blackhawks, Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson absolutely obliterated Blackhawks forward Bryan Bickell. The two were racing for a loose puck in the corner when Ericsson caught Bickell off-guard. Bickell yardsaled a bit, losing his left glove, and then had a lot of trouble getting back to his feet. This was a seismic collision between two massive players; Ericsson is 6’4″ 221 lbs, and Bickell is 6’4″ 233 lbs.

Ericsson helps fill big holes on Wings' defense

DETROIT -- It seems like just yesterday when Jonathan Ericsson was the young defenseman arriving on the scene and making an impact for the Detroit Red Wings.

In the Wings' 2009 playoff run, Ericsson stunned everyone with his four goals and four assists in the 22 games, and by playing three days after an emergency appendectomy. He had played just 19 regular-season games.

Now 29, Ericsson is part of the Wings' top defensive pairing, along with fellow Swede Niklas Kronwall.

When Nick Lidstrom retired and Brad Stuart left to return to San Jose, it meant a bigger role for Ericsson.

"They always had a good D corps here, so it just took a while to get in," Ericsson said. "Thats how they develop all the players here, and I think theyve done a good job.

"When you get up here, most players are ready to stay up and not be up and down. You have to be patient. Everything doesnt come all at once. You just have to work your way in."

Wings thrive in lengthy penalty kill

DETROIT -- In the playoffs, you have to keep your shifts short -- unless you can't.

The Detroit Red Wings found that out the hard way early in the second period of Monday night's 3-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Defenseman Brendan Smith took a holding penalty, so the Wings' penalty killers headed out -- and seemingly never came back off the ice.

Despite killing off the penalty without allowing a shot, the Wings couldn't get the puck out of the zone, no matter how hard they tried.

Drew Miller, in his second game back since returning from a broken hand, and defenseman Jonathan Ericsson each played 3 minutes, 15 seconds.

"Id like to forget that one," Miller said. "It was a long one. When you get stuck on the penalty kill there, its tough to get off.

"You try and stay tight. Guys were blocking shots, and Jimmy (Howard) made some big saves for us. The key is just to survive it and get off the ice as fast as you can, when you can."

Ericsson said he found a sec

Henrik Zetterberg, Jonathan Ericsson Deliver Dazzling Assists Against LA Kings: Video

Jonathan Ericsson’s beautiful pass to Pavel Datsyuk helped get the Detroit Red Wings on the board Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Kings. And Henrik Zetterberg’s display of skill in the third period helped put the clutch 3-1 win away.
First, it was Ericsson, the Red Wings’ hulking defenseman, who fired a no-look feed across the ice to Datsyuk. Detroit’s assistant captain took it from there, moving the puck to his backhand and beating Jonathan Quick five-hole. That play tied the game at one midway through the second period.

Later, after Jordin Tootoo put the Wings on top, Zetterberg took a pass on the power play from Datsyuk, spun away from traffic and hit Johan Franzen in the crease. Franzen tapped it home to give the Wings an important insurance goal.

We’ll have more on the Red Wings’ current playoff situation soon, but the 3-1 win does give them a chance to clinch a spot Thursday night.

Jonathan Ericsson’s late third period goal saves linesman’s bladder

The Detroit Red Wings made it interesting Sunday afternoon. The took a 2-0 lead late in the first period before allowing the Kings to score in the last minute of the first. The 2-1 lead held up for all of the second period and 19:07 of game time in the third period before Alec Martinez tied it up for Los Angeles.
Enter Jonathan Ericsson. The Wings defenseman buried a shot with 4.5 seconds remaining in the third to seal a 3-2 Wings win. And while the Wings picked up a crucial two points as they maintain they sit among eight teams separated by four points in the Western Conference, Ericsson’s goal didn’t benefit them the most.
You see, after the goal, Ericsson received a rather unique “thank you.”
“The funniest thing is that one of the linesmen thanked me for scoring. He said, ‘Thank you so much, I really have to go pee.’ He wouldn’t last overtime.”
Ericsson wouldn’t say which linesman it was. But the two working the game, according to the box score, were Don Henderson and Brad K

Jonathan Ericsson Says He Was Thanked After Scoring Game-Winner by Linesman Who ‘Had to Pee’

The Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings played one of the most exciting games of the young NHL season Sunday, and it left some hockey fans wishing the game would go to overtime.
At least one person on the ice was just fine with the Red Wings winning the game on a Jonathan Ericsson goal with just 4.5 seconds left to play in Detroit.
That would be one of the linesmen, who was hoping the game would end so he could answer nature’s call. The linesman had to go so bad, in fact, that Ericsson received thanks from the official.
This, from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free-Press via Twitter.
Ericsson on scoring with 5s left: "One of the linesmen was thanking me. He said, 'Oh thank you so much, I really had to go pee." #RedWings— Helene St. James (@HeleneStJames) February 10, 2013

Jonathan Ericsson scores with seconds left to give the Wings a 3-2 win over the Kings (VIDEO)

The hockey’s are for the most part an unfair bunch and Sunday’s game between the Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings proved so.
After getting dominated essentially the entire game, the Red Wings pulled off a 3-2 win over the defending Stanley Cup champions from the Joe Louis Arena.
But to further rub salt into the open wound of the Kings, who have struggled all season, the Wings pulled off the victory when Jonathan Ericsson’s blast just trickled by Jonathan Quick with just four seconds remaining in the third.
“The funniest part, actually, was one of the linesmen was thanking me after I scored,” Ericsson said. “He said, ‘Thank you so much because I really have to go pee. I wouldn’t have lasted the overtime.’
“That was kind of funny.”
You gotta love when things seem to work out for everyone (except the Kings of course).

All this came after Alec Martinez was able to tie things up for the Kings with Quick on the bench and just 52 seconds remaining on the clock.
However aside from E...

Detroit Red Wings off to rocky start

In this 2013 season that has been condensed down to 48 games, each one has an added feeling of emphasis.
Out to a 1-2 start and already laden with injuries, the Detroit Red Wings should be feeling uneasy.
After falling to St. Louis on opening night by a whopping 6-0 margin, the Wings were able to regroup and beat Columbus 4-3 in shootout fashion.
Tonight, finally playing at Joe Louis Arena for the first time of the season, the Red Wings were topped by Dallas 2-1. It was Detroit’s first home-opening loss in four years.
There are several reasons for the slow start, but the injuries have already begun to play a factor for Detroit. An already shallow defensive unit has been further depleted by injuries to Jonathan Ericsson, Carlo Colaiacovo and Ian White.
While Ericsson and White are considered day-to-day and may play in the Wings’ next contest on Friday, Colaiacovo suffered a serious shoulder injury in Columbus and was wearing a sling tonight. He’s week-to-week at best.
Now, the same defense that los

As an addendum to The “early overnight report”: the closest thing to a team of Red Wings is running into the injury bug at the World Championships. Sweden, which employs a little under half of the Wings’ participants at the Worlds, lost Fredrik Petersson‘s services thanks to a broken wrist during the Swedes’ first game; Jonathan Ericsson left the game with what is now a bruised SI joint as well, and this morning, the Tre Kronor found out that Joel (brother of Henrik) Lundqvist will miss the rest of the tournament with a fractured orbital bone.

And Ericsson? Aftonbladet’s Hans Abrahamsson and Erik Karlsson report that Ericsson did not practice today, and won’t return to action until next week:

Datsyuk, Ericsson practice with Wings

DETROIT -- Perhaps the Red Wings are starting to see the light at the end of the injury tunnel.

Captain Nick Lidstrom (ankle), Pavel Datsyuk (knee), Todd Bertuzzi (groin), Jimmy Howard (groin), Jonathan Ericsson (broken wrist) and Jakub Kindl (upper body) remain out for Friday night's home game against the Los Angeles Kings.

But both Datsyuk and Ericsson were able to participate in at least part of practice Thursday, and Lidstrom and Howard skated a little before practice.

Although Henrik Zetterberg did not practice Thursday, coach Mike Babcock said he would play Friday.

For Lidstrom, it marked the first time he's skated since suffering the deep bone bruise to his ankle.

"It's getting better every day," Lidstrom said. "My motion is getting better, my movements. My foot's getting better so that's encouraging."

But Lidstrom said he wouldn't play this weekend. He's hopeful he can return next on the team's upcoming West coast trip, which starts Tuesday in
