Doug Mientkiewicz Gets Eighth At-Bat of Season

Remember when re-signing Doug Mientkiewicz was the most important thing since ever? Fun times.
I generally try not to call out people for things they said seven months ago. I've certainly said my fair share of things that turned out to be wrong, or silly, or irrelevant in retrospect. Every baseball writer has, and it's good to be forgiving, because predicting what's going to happen in a baseball season can be an almost comically inexact science.
The furor over Mientkiewicz, ...

Welcome Back, Mientkiewicz

Doug Mientkiewicz singles in Wednesday's game.

From Dylan Hernandez at the LA Times:

Done receiving congratulatory high-fives from teammates in the dugout, Mientkiewicz ducked into the clubhouse and disappeared for 10 minutes. "I went and found a quiet place," he said, not disclosing the location. "It was in the building. I knew no one would find me. The emotions exploded."

Mientkiewicz Rehab Includes Pigskin

Stan Conte and Doug Mientkiewicz throw the football at Dodger Stadium before the Dodgers' July 1 game.

From Eric Collins (presumably) at Psychollingy:

I just saw Dodger Head Trainer Stan Conte throwing a football around with injured first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. What's that all about?

I was wondering the same thing when I saw Conte and Mientkiewicz bust out the pigskin before a game earlier this month. We can only assume throwing one-kneed passes has therapeutic properties.

Non Roster Invitee: Doug Mientkiewicz - Dodgers

Ten years ago or so I gotta admit. Doug Mientkiewicz was kinda cool. After all he was playing in Minnesota, could field a ball and his name somehow had both w and z in it.
Anyway this season he’s trying to make the Los Angeles Dodgers. Last season he tried the same thing with the Pittsburgh [...]

The Dodgers? signing of Doug Mientkiewicz to a minor-league contract continues two very recent yet very obvious trends by the organization.? The first is to sign members of the 2004 Boston Red Sox and the second is to bring in guys who played under Torre.? Soon, this team will consists of no one who doesn?t [...]

So Close

I have a weird relationship with Pirates pitchers and no-hitters. My first brush with a no-no as a fan came in the summer of 1990, when Doug Drabek tossed eight and two-thirds innings of hitless ball against the Phillies. That was my first summer following baseball, and I remember the game had an air of [...]

Pirates Sign Mientkiewicz to Minor League Deal

Well, everyone has been complaining that the Pirates front office hasn't done anything of significance this year, and, well, they still haven't. However, Pirates.com does report that the Bucs have signed 1B Doug Mientkiewicz to a minor league contract. Besides being a real pain to spell, he'll simply be another body off the bench, but will probably be a bit rusty considering he spent most of last season rehabbing a fractured wrist from a collision in June. When healthy, he batted ...

Doug Mientkiewicz Swinging for Cancer Awareness

An article I found on the Kansas City Royals team page.

More than symbolic: The pink bat resting in first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz's locker stall is more than a marketing gimmick tied to Major League Baseball's breast cancer awareness campaign for Mother's Day.

The lumber Mientkiewicz will swing on Sunday is a reminder of his mother's offseason battle against the disease -- and a celebration that she's been declared cancer-free.

Janice Mientkiewicz, who lives in Miami, will be at Camden Yards on Sunday, adding to the emotional story line.

"She was so strong and she handled it amazing," Mientkiewicz said. "She never was scared and she took everything that happened with the right frame of mind."

Mientkiewicz has long been involved in breast cancer awareness. When he played in Minnesota, he and wife Jodi -- a cancer survivor since 2002 -- were involved in the Parker Hughes Cancer Society, visiting with patients and helping to raise funds to battle the disease.

"You think your family is invincible until something happens to you," Mientkiewicz said. "This winter, the hardest thing was not knowing [how things would turn out]."

On Sunday, he'll get to share that triumph. Mientkiewicz hopes to be able to save one of the specially made bats for his mother.
