Arbitration Fallout: Adrian Beltre

Surprise, surprise. The Mariners offered Adrian Beltre arbitration:"Hours before the deadline for offering arbitration to ranked free-agent players to ensure compensation in the form of coveted picks in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, Seattle offered arbitration to third baseman Beltre while not offering it to left-hander Bedard. This means that if Beltre -- ranked a Type B free agent by the Elias Sports Bureau based on performance over the previous two seasons -- declines the arbitrati...

Arbitration offers: It's the Type A's that matter most

Now that the Mariners have offered arbitration to free agent Adrian Beltre but not Erik Bedard (I batted .500 on that prediction; obviously, the Mariners feared that Bedard would accept arbitration and weren't willing to take that risk), a couple of thoughts:

Mariners offer arbitration to Adrian Beltre, but not to Erik Bedard

This was a move many of us saw coming and the Mariners did indeed offer arbitration to third baseman Adrian Beltre today while declining to do the same with Erik Bedard and the rest of the team's "unranked" free agents in terms of Type A or B compensation. The reason boils down to risk. Players generally tend to earn at least their salaries from the previous year in arbitration, while often getting increases as well. And even significant missed time from injury does little to c...

The Adrian Beltre Arbitration Situation

Personally, I don't see this as being too tough of a call.
For one thing (and the main reason), I think the odds are that, if you offer Beltre arbitration, he's going to decline it. He knows there's a market for him out there, a market that includes Boston and Philadelphia, two big-budget teams with both a need and an understanding of how good he is. With both demand and competition for his services, Beltre's almost certainly going to get a few multi-year offers at a good...

Poll: To which free agent(s) should the Mariners offer salary arbitration?

As I detailed earlier, the deadline for offering salary arbitration to ranked free agents is Tuesday at 9 p.m. Seattle time. The Mariners have two Type B free agents to decide about: Erik Bedard and Adrian Beltre. If they offer arbitration, they'll get a sandwich pick between the first and second round if the player signs elsewhere. Ah, but they might accept arbitration, costing the Mariners a pretty penny in salary. There are pros and cons for either decision. What do you think?

Mariners face deadline to offer arbitration to Adrian Beltre, Eric Bedard

Beltre and Bedard are both categorized as "Type B" free agents in the official Elias rankings. That means the team would get a supplemental draft pick between the first and second round in the next June draft if either player signs with another team — but only if it has offered salary arbitration.

Cardinals Rumors: Pujols, Holliday, Nady, Beltre

The Cardinals know it will take a lengthy and substantial offer to keep Albert Pujols in St. Louis, but the slugging first baseman would like to see what the Cards do this offseason before beginning serious contract talks, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Pujols' agent, Dan Lozano, says he and his client aren't in a rush to complete a long-term deal. Pujols is under contract for next year and the Cardinals are expected to pick up his $16MM option for 2011.The...

Blogging the Offseason: Seattle Mariners

Blogging the Offseason is a 30 team series in which I ask a blogging representative from each MLB team a series of ten questions about their desires and thoughts surrounding the offseason. Check out all of them here.

Today's AL team is the Seattle Mariners and our guest is Griffin from the Mariners Blog, Sodo Mojo.

1. What do the Mariners need to do this offseason to truly make them a contender for the AL West crown in 2010?
They have to sign or acquire a legitimate #2 starter, fig...

Exploring Third Base Options for 2010

With Adrian Beltre likely leaving, the Mariners have a gaping hole over at third base for the 2010 season. It’s almost certainly going to end up being a downgrade from what we’ve grown accustomed to, but we do have some options. One option that wouldn’t require any trades or signing, would be to simply put [...]

It’s bizarre how “Achilles‘ heel” came to be part of the medical lexicon, with the name of the large tendon running down the back of the leg to the heel now named for the legend of the Ancient Greek.
