The Domino Effect Among Coaches When Elite Jobs Open Up

Usually when a head coaching position opens up at one of the elite college basketball programs, it will start a domino effect throughout the rest of the nation. What is happening right now is insane.

College Coaches Staying Put Was The Right Call

This is the time of year when college coaches gather around and play the game of musical chairs to see who will be the next coach where. We have already seen it with Billy Gillespie being replaced by John Calipari. But one coach, at least, seems to have bucked the trend.Mike Anderson agreed to a new extended contract at Missouri, keeping him a Tiger for the next seven years and ending rumors that he would jump ship to coach Memphis. And signing that contract may have been the best decision Anderson has made all year (and this from a coach who took his team to the elite and an impressive win over that same Memphis team). In his time with Missouri, Anderson has transformed the Tigers from a mid level contender in the Big 12 to conference front-runner, with a flashy style and up pace game plan that he perfected at UAB. With all that going for him, why would he even consider Memphis?Continue reading "College Coaches Staying Put Was The Right Call"

Sources said Anderson turned down a $2.5 million offer to coach at Georgia.
Cal Gone: Take Me Away

((HT: Memphis Commercial Appeal))

Press conferences start at 9:30 AM eastern time in Lexington for Calipari's introduction.

Dan Wolken starts the Memphis side of the Tigers post-mortem saying Calipari will receive an eight-year, $31.65 million deal plus incentives, according to the University of Kentucky. According to sources close to the process, however, Memphis had offered a deal that was just as lucrative.

Kentucky will pay Memphis a $200,000 buyout that was included in Calipari’s U of M contract.

Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson will hold a news conference at noon Wednesday to discuss plans for the future, as the program moves into its first coaching search since 2000. Donors Alan Graf and Mike Rose will play major roles in the search.

One name at the top of Memphis’ list was removed on Tuesday night when Mike Anderson agreed to a new seven-year contract to stay at Missouri.

The next coach on Memphis’ radar could be Southern California’s Tim Floyd, who has big-time recruiting connections, a track record of college success and NBA head coaching experience. Floyd, who reportedly makes $850,000 at USC, might also be intrigued by the opportunity to coach at a school where basketball is the top priority and doesn’t have to share the spotlight with USC football or UCLA basketball.

According to one of Floyd’s close friends in coaching, he would be interested in the job because of his strong roots in the South, despite his recent acclimation to the West Coast. Floyd owns a home just outside of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where he was born. According to the coach, who requested to remain anonymous, the Memphis job would make a lot of sense for Floyd and he’d be as close to Calipari as Memphis could find in terms of his track record and ability to fit in with the program.

Other names that might come into play include Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy, Miami coach Frank Haith, UTEP coach Tony Barbee, current assistant Josh Pastner or former New Mexico State and Sacramento Kings coach Reggie Theus.

ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla said Memphis can stay relevant if it makes the right hire.

“There’s no question. It will be slightly different,” Fraschilla said. “What John did is going to be tough to duplicate, and I’m not sure most coaches would want to try to step in his shoes, but two guys that could get it done are Tim Floyd and Mike Anderson. They both have the experience and the recruiting ties and the substance to be able to weather what is a tough place to please a great fan base.”

Mike Anderson Finally Getting Respect: Mizzou Dominates

Missouri head coach Mike Anderson has answered his critics. And I’ve answered mine, all in the same process.
There was a point in time when Anderson was told his Nolan Richardson defensive style of play would never be able to complete at the national level. That didn’t slow Anderson down at all though. Instead he’s always [...]

Mizzou's Soft Press Forces Bad Shots From Oklahoma St.

It's a crazy time to be a basketball fan. Lots of local varsity hoop watching along with all the college action with the conference championships going on. I want to give props to Vancouver College Prep and specifically Junior guard Phil Scrubb for an outstanding game and the game winning bucket, they've punched their ticket to the finals of the BC High School Provincial Championship on Sunday.

Back to the college action, some fantastic games including that crazy 6OT game last night between UConn and Syracuse, that's almost 2 complete games back to back. Tonight, I took in Mizzou and Oklahoma State for the right to play Baylor for the Big 12 Championship. The game wasn't all that pretty to watch, but I felt the difference in the game (a close one) was a turnover here, a bad shot there, all generated off of Mizzou's soft press. Here are a few sequences from the second half,

I think a lot of people believe that a press has to be aggressive, take big risks, jump the passing lanes, etc... But when you get to these big championship games, the one and dones against skilled athletic teams, a soft press is much better. You may not force as many turnovers, or bad shots, but remember, the game could come down to just that 1 bad turnover or bad shot. In other words, don't take unnecessary risks that may leave your backend defense vulnerable to easy layups, but put enough pressure on the ball to get that 1 or 2 key defensive plays that might just win the game from you.

The last two sequences were examples of their soft press which they ran off and on in the second half. They only ran this one Run and Jump press just once. It's very basic but it was effective due to the element of surprise. If you run these stunts too much, the offense will adjust. So, X1 guides the ball-handler along the sideline. X4 steps up to double. X2 backfills for X4. X5 splits O5 and O2,

From the video, obviously it worked really well and caught the Cowboys by surprise.

Summary:

In a close game like this one, Mizzou winning by 8, it's the one turnover, the one bad shot, which makes the difference. Oklahoma St. shot 21-for-59 (36%) while Mizzou shot 24-for-64 (38%). Oklahoma St. had 16 turnovers, Mizzou 10. Not huge margins, but again, it didn't need to be.

If you want your teams to play defense like Mizzou, then check out Mike Anderson's DVD on 40 minutes of hell.
FINALLY....

Finally, the season has made its way to us. We've been through all the off-season and summer, working out like our lives depended on it, goin thru the weight lifting and running when it hurt and you didnt want to do no more; but u think to yourself this last one will give me my edge or that last little umff to push thru a tackle or to make a tackle while out of position.. so u push harder to run that last hill or gasser or lift that weight u been struggling with. This is the dedication and focus that's been put into making sure you're on top of your game and the game not on top of you. Now it's time for the big show.

So the big show is here and im trying to get ready to at least get a taste of Monday Night's game against Cincy. I have been battling a high ankle sprain that happened vs the NYG. I was making this crushing block, LOL right, or a block on a DB and as i was driving him down the field a group of big boys chasing Mike Anderson like a pack of lions huntin for food came and the pack fell on me... I was like O MY GOD... Demtrius Williams came up and asked me if i was alright and I just shook my head and said "Nope". I got up, hobbled off and got the bad report... it's been a tough 3 weeks for me. Being injured is hard to handle for anybody when u know what u can do, but all u can do is watch and say what u woulda done if that was you... Well, I thank God for allowing me to b able to practice this week. It's still pretty sore. If anybody has had a high ankle sprain where u feel it up your leg you know what im talking bout..

I want everybody to get your popcorn ready cause its gonna b a great year... full of excitment and memories.

God bless,
