The Braves have a long history of developing dominant Major League pitching and that trend seems to be continuing with the emergence of Tommy Hanson with Atlanta this season and with the near limitless potential of their top right handed starting pitching prospects. The top half of the list ...

And so we are done for baseball on the diamond, for the next few months. Congrats to the Yankees.
Jeff Wilson writes that Clint Hurdle will be announced as the Rangers' hitting coach today. Wilson says that the announcement was delayed until today because of MLB's request that no significant news be announced during the World Series.
And Drew Davison has a Q&A with Kevin Millwood about Millwood's golf game.

G159: Millwood pitches well in 11-3 win

I don't ever want John Lackey as a Ranger. Because we seem to tee off on him a lot, he's a guy who is very good for everyone, but not with us. The Angels, having clinched, only had him in for two innings, but we had four hits and two runs on that, both came on Chris Davis' second inning home run.

Andruw Jones was the only Ranger without a hit. Everyone else had at least one (Gentry, Murphy), with most guys having multiples (Davis had 3).

Kevin Millwood, though, had a great outi...

Running a quick projection/regression using 4.8 R/G as the AL average and 8/4/2/1 for Millwood's Rangers performance, I get a value of 2.5 WAR, which would be worth $11.25M on the year. If you consider his age, 2 WAR would not be surprising, meaning that Millwood would not be projected to match his $12M salary using these methods. Still, with that projected total and the values on FanGraphs, Millwood's total contract worth would be estimated at $67.5M, mostly on the back of that 5 ...

An idle question

Let's assume Kevin Millwood didn't have a vesting option for 2010. He either was under contract for 2010, or is a free agent after 2009, either way.
Given that this season is toast, and given that Millwood has been horrible for 2+ months, wouldn't the organization be thinking long and hard about shutting Millwood down for the season anyway, and letting Dustin Nippert -- who is out of options and who the organization needs to make a decision about this offseason -- take ...

Rangers’ Finances

Baseball Time in Arlington rounds up reports on the Rangers financial woes, and it appears MLB is calling the shots now. That makes Kevin Millwood’s status very interesting:

The decision to allow Kevin Millwood’s 2010 option — worth $12 million, as reported many times over — to vest could be taken out of the Rangers’ [...]

Millwood’s Regression

Baseball Time in Arlington charts Kevin Millwood’s increase in pitches per inning throughout the season.
While the ballooning nature of Millwood’s 2009 pitch counts remain a focal point of concern, what’s particularly disconcerting with respect to this graph is that Millwood’s inning-by-inning workload is also ballooning, with the corollary being that greater fatigue and diminished performance [...]

Should the Rangers then be sellers? There’s a case for it, perhaps shopping Kevin Millwood, Hank Blalock, C.J. Wilson, and others who would have value in the market and who have no role on the team going forward. Millwood, having his best season in years, would be one of the top pitchers on the market, and a number of teams could use a bat on the corners. However, and this is not a position I usually advocate, the Rangers don’t have to make that kind of trade. The prospects they could get ...
