Chicago Bears Player Preview: Earl Bennett

Today I will preview the Chicago Bears other 3rd round pick, Earl Bennett, on Chicago Bears Player Preview. Personally, I think this guy was a steal in this years NFL Draft. Bennett set the SEC record for career receptions with 236. In his first two years, no one in the SEC had more receptions than he did. Also, he is the first ever SEC receiver to record 75+ receptions in three seasons. The 6'1," 202 Ib wideout is best buds with Chicago Bears first round pick OT Chris Williams (Also from Vanderbilt). Bennett has reliable hands and just enough speed to go deep. With his above average cutting ability, he is able to shake off defenders. Many thought he was the best play maker at Vanderbilt. The only thing Bennett needs to work on is his route running. Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner said this days after they drafted Bennett: "We'll give him an opportunity to come in and compete right away." "He's a very intelligent young man, so he shouldn't have any trouble picking things up. He's very competitive, so I know he'll enjoy coming in and competing." Those stats show Bennett can do it all. In 2006, his best season, he recorded 82 receptions for 1,146 yards and earned all-SEC honors for two straight seasons. In his junior year, he received all-SEC honors once again. In 3 years with the Commodores, Bennett finished with 236 receptions, 2,852 receiving yards, and 20 touchdowns. I like those stats. Only 21 years old, but is expected compete for that open #1 WR spot. I see him doing just that and becoming the threat that Devin Hester could develop into. It will be hard for a rookie to come in and win the #1 spot. If he doesn't develop this season, he will down the road.

Grading Chicago Bears Draft

After a lot of thought I have decided to give the Bears draft a grade of B+. They drafted players to fill voids an offensive tackle, running back, and wide reciver, while at the same time drafting players based on the most talented available. Could this mean the Bears are actually learning how to draft like a successful franchise? Tackle Chris Williams, running back Matt Forte, receiver Earl Bennett, defensive tackle Marcus Harrison, and safety Craig Steltz will all have an opportunity to compete for a starting spot. Rumors of healing problems with Cedric Benson makes the Forte pick even more important. The only thing keeping this draft from an A is the lack of a quarterback. The Bears only have two on the roster and it seemed a certainty that they would grab one in the draft. A lot of fans are left wondering who will be the third quarterback on the roster. Fbkid's 2008 Draft Rankings: Wide Receiver

This is similar to my last list except for wide receivers. This is one of the most talked about positions in the draft so to see what happens should be interesting. So here are my top 10 receivers in the draft. 1.Malcolm Kelly Oklahoma 2.Limas Sweed Texas 3.DeSean Jackson California 4.Devin Thomas Michigan State 5.James Hardy Indiana 6.Mario Manningham Michigan 7.Early Doucet LSU 8.Earl Bennett Vanderbilt 9.Jerome Simpson Coastal Carolina 10.Dexter Jackson Appalachian State 2008 class grade:B Malcolm Kelly has everything you want in a receiver as he has great hands along with running good routes. He is also a spectacular red-zone target. Limas Sweed is a similar player to Kelly and could make an impact right away. The only problem is that he has a history with injuries. DeSean Jackson isn't the prototypical size teams look for in a receiver but his impact on returns will make him an early pick. Devin Thomas has great size and is excellent after the catch. He will need to develop though as he was only a one-year starter. James Hardy is a great red-zone target at 6'6. His only problem is that he needs to put on weight to be even more effective. Mario Manningham has the potential to be a productive receiver in the NFL. But after a poor showing at the combine his stock has fallen. He is quick though and plays faster than his timed speed would suggest. Early Doucet is a productive player who could end up being a solid bargin for a team who takes him in the late second early 3rd round. Earl Bennett ended his college career as one of the top receivers in SEC history. If his stats look poor the last few years it is because the lack of quarterback play after Jay Cutler left. Jerome Simpson had a great performance at the combine and has great size. He also has great hands he has potential to be a great starter. Dexter Jackson is one of the fastest receivers in the draft and could also really help in the return game. He could develop into a solid number three receiver. Many of these players have lots of potential and could be impact players for years to come. The only thing is that receiver is always a deep position and a player with potential like Marques Colston can fall through the cracks all the way to the 7th round.
