Your Morning Dump… Where it’s damn near criminal to blame Paul Pierce

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big storyline. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.
He’s averaging 18.7 points, 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds – so again, he’s done a lot more than nothing. But he’s also 2-16 from 3-point range with 16 turnovers, some coming when Iman Shumpert apparently decides: Well, I think it’d be cool to just take the basketball straight out of Pierce’s hands right now.
Pierce can’t slow down Carmelo Anthony, can’t take advantage of Raymond Felton, and can’t help the Boston Celtics as they stagger toward completing one of the worst offensive series of all-time. The Celtics are down 3-0, one loss away from broomsticks, which would be the team’s initial first-round exit of the Kevin Garnett era. The last time Boston was swept, by the Indiana Pacers in 2003-04, Pierce started alongside Jiri Welsch, Walter McCarty, Chucky Atkins and Mark Blount.
“Definitely surprised,” he said Friday

Kevin Garnett Cannot Play 48 Minutes a Night, So Celtics Must Find Ways to Play Well Without Him

BOSTON — The year before Kevin Garnett came to Boston, he logged nearly 40 minutes per night for the Minnesota Timberwolves, purely out of necessity. That Wolves squad was so thin that the infamous Mark Blount was the third-leading scorer, and nobody other than Garnett grabbed more than five rebounds or blocked more than one shot a night.
That was seven years ago.
The Celtics find themselves in a similar predicament now, as they morph from an all-around fearsome Garnett-led unit into a disjointed collection of individuals when he leaves the court. Celtics coach Doc Rivers does not have the luxury Dwane Casey and Randy Wittman had in 2006-07, however, when those coaches could count on a spry 30-year-old to play virtually every minute of every game.
A lot of things happened when Garnett took a seat during Boston’s 106-100 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday. As Rajon Rondo noted, nothing that happened was good. The issue was most pronounced at the end of the first half, when the ...

What the Hell Happened to...Chris Herren?

By the time I got traded (to the Celtics), I was happy for all the wrong reasons. I wasn't happy because I was back home and had grown up idolizing the Celtics. I was happy because I was back home and I knew where to get drugs.
Weed, coke, crystal meth. Alcohol and ecstasy. Heroin and oxycontin. Chris Herren’s been there and done that. And he’s not afraid to shy away from it. If you have a chance to read his biography Basketball Junkie, do it: it’s one of the better sports books I’ve read. Chris doesn’t cut corners. He doesn’t filter out stuff that didn’t take place. He tells it how it was. Some of it is mind-blowing and it’s truly remarkable how he’s alive today to tell his story. This week in What the Hell Happened To, we look back on Chris' story.

From growing up in Fall River (1 hour outside of Boston) in the shadow of his father and older brother, both standout athletes, Chris was faced with pressure from a young age. As he became better and more a

Danny's Vision and Vindication

Danny took his share of abuse for the Celtics fortunes over his first 3 years on the job. When he became the Celtics GM he said that he had a 5 year plan to rebuild the Celtics and get them back to contention. His plan was to gather "chips" and then trade them for established stars. Many fans were disillusioned with the "youth movement" and felt that the Celtics were years away from contending, if ever. But what most of us forgot was Danny's initial vision of gathering trading chips. Some of his moves were lateral but others were trading one chip for another just slightly more valuable financially or on the court or that would give us a draft pick he could parlay into a player or use as a chip. Here is a look at Danny's road to building the team that won Banner 17.

Danny traded Darius Songaila to Sacramento and received 2 second round pics in return. These picks were used to draft Brandon Hunter in 2003 and Orien Greene in 2005. This move didn't real...

Jared Sullinger has forgotten more about rebounding than Mark Blount ever knew

The Boston Celtics, for years, have rebounded like the ball might give them a disease. But rookie Jared Sullinger has always been a very good rebounder. And he’s reduced it, much like Kevin Love has done, to a sweet science. (Boston Herald)“You have to know your niche,” Sullinger said. “You have to know that if they shoot from the left side, 75 percent of the time it’s coming off the other side. You have to get yourself into position. It’s not about jumping. It’s about getting yourself into the perfect position to get the rebound. It’s reading the shot and knowing your shooters. It only takes me a couple of times to know my shooters.“Like Gib, his come off short, so if he’s on the left side, it’s coming off on the right side,” Sullinger said of Jonathan Gibson, who came off the bench with 17 points. “It takes me a couple of days to know what shots are going up, and then you just have to rebound.”It follows that Sullinger must have the flight pattern of E’Twaun Moore’s jumpe

Al Jefferson Back in Playoffs, Ending Drought That Overshadowed His Skills

Feel good for Al Jefferson, Celtics fans. Jefferson, who the Celtics selected with the 15th pick in the 2004 draft, had never been to the playoffs before this season -- not really, anyway. He was no more than a rookie in 2004-05 when he made his only postseason trip with Boston, under the tutelage of Raef LaFrentz and Mark Blount and taking fewer shots per game than Jiri Welsch. For the first time as an All-Star caliber center -- which is what he developed into after the Celtics sent him to Minnesota as part of the Kevin Garnett trade in...

Paul Pierce talks retirement

Keep in mind: The other day, Mickael Pietrus told reporters he wasn’t going to play against the Atlanta Hawks even though he’d known all day he was going to play. Players can have their fun with reporters.
But this isn’t my idea of fun. Paul Pierce told the Boston Herald’s Steve Bulpett, maybe jokingly, maybe not, that he might retire after this season.

“Well, I figure this might be my last time anyway going to Jersey,” Pierce said before last night’s 84-79 loss to the Raptors. “This could be my last year playing.”
He then laughed, making it seem he was perhaps kidding. But he didn’t step back when asked about it further.
“You never know, man,” Pierce said. “I don’t know. I’ve got to preserve my body for the rest of my life.”
Hit with the basic John McEnroeline — you cannot be serious — he shook his head.
“I don’t know,” said the second-leading scorer in Celtics history. “I’ve thought about it. I don’t know. I’ve got to see how my summer goes wit

Recap: Celtics lose game and more bodies

I had a feeling this face punch compilation from Road House would fit the game recap. The Mavericks beat up the Celtics tonight, 89-73.
The script was the same... there's no need to rehash the lack of rebounding and second chance points. Not having anyone who could guard Dirk Nowitzki (26 points, 16 rebounds) certainly didn't help.
The Celtics lost two more bigs: Jermaine O'Neal (sprained wrist) and Chris Wilcox (strained groin). Is Mark Blount still available? His rebounding ability would fit perfectly with this team.
The lone bright spot? Paul Pierce (20 points, 4 steals) showed a pulse. Ignore the -27.
Box score

Where Does Stiemsma's Rookie Start Rank In Celtics Recent History?

We're talking Celtic's centers right here. Glen Davis and Leon Powe are forwards so they don't count. I've also cut this list down to include only players whose 1st starts were as rookies, the only exception being Kendrick Perkins who only played 36 minutes as an actual rookie. The list goes all the way from Stiemsma against the Wizards to Brad Lohaus against the Trail Blazers in 1988.

2012- Greg Stiemsma: 21 Minutes, 13 points, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, 5-7 FG, 3-4 FT, 3 PF. WIN.

2011- Semih Erden: 17 Minutes, 8 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block, 2-2 FG, 4-6 FT, 4 PF. WIN.

2005- Kendrick Perkins: 8 Minutes, 2 points, 3 rebounds, 0 blocks, 1-2 FG, 0-0 FT, 5 PF. WIN.

2001- Mark Blount: 18 Minutes, 2 points, 3 rebounds, 2 blocks, 1-2 FG, 0-0 FT, 2 PF. LOSS.

1997- Steve Hamer: 31 Minutes, 9 points, 4 rebounds, 0 blocks, 3-3 FG, 3-3 FT, 2 PF. LOSS.

1994- Eric Montross: 26 Minutes, 12 points, 7 rebounds, 3 blocks, 5-10 FG, 2-2 FT, 5 PF. WIN.

Former Celtic Ricky Davis to Join Red Claws

The Maine Red Claws, presented by Quirk Chevrolet, today announced that they have claimed NBA veteran and former Boston Celtic Ricky Davis from the Available Player Pool.
Davis, 32, has played in 736 NBA games in a career that began in 1999 as the first round selection (21st overall) of the Charlotte Bobcats. His 12-year NBA career saw him play for six NBA teams, including three seasons with the Boston Celtics. The Celtics traded the high-scoring swingman on January 26, 2006 to the Minnesota Timberwolves along with Marcus Banks, Mark Blount, Justin Reed, a 2006 2nd round draft pick (Craig Smith) and a 2008 2nd round draft pick (Nikola Pekovic) for Dwayne Jones, Michael Olowokandi, Wally Szczerbiak and a 2009 1st round draft pick (Jonny Flynn). He scored a career-high 20.6 ppg in 2002-03 as a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
