Gerald Green gets another shot with Mavs

The deep pockets of Mark Cuban continue to give out money, as the Mavs sign former dunk champ Gerald Green to a one year contract worth the 3 year league minimum. Green is an explosive athlete but is lacking in skill, as the former #18 pick has averaged only 8.2 ppg and is a defensive liability. Hopefully, for both parties, this works out.

hey, coaches need extensions too

so danny ainge is not only negotiating contracts with players, but with his coaching staff as well. the herald reports that he's inking an extension for doc, and new deals for all 3 assistant coaches. i worry that thibodeau is in such high demand that he would go elsewhere, but i want him to stay, just like everyone else in this town.

also, on espn's rumor central, the initial offers for posey from the celtics "weren't enough," and that other franchises offers are being considered more seriously (to be honest, i think i could see him being a part of the nets next season. i've been getting that feeling with the promise of another megastar in a few years. weird). i can't say that this is a surprise, obviously, but i can say that i really want maggette in boston, badly. the thoughts of maggette in celtic green were enough to get me out of the "posey doesn't want to be with us anymore" funk i was in yesterday. the spurs are drawing up a contract offer for maggette, as are the magic, but i would absolutely love to see him in boston. i didn't expect danny to make a move for him, but it's pretty awesome. maggette is an excellent athlete, and i think that if posey were to leave boston (which is looking more and more likely as the days pass) that maggette could be a great person to put in his place.

no new news on the birdman front.
also, i don't want tyronn lue in boston. i just don't think it's a great move.

more blips: gerald green, last season's afterthought, is headed to the mavs, along with desagana diop. the nuggets are interested in jannero pargo, but still don't have their PG option.

Brand to Warriors and other Nba Rumours

Goldenstate fresh off of losing PG Baron Davis has offered Brand a monster contract, a five year deal worth in the 85 to 90 million range, this is substatntially more than the Clippers can offer, approx 20 million.

This move certainly signals that the Warriors must believe that Gilbert Arenas is going to sign and stay in Washington as they had also offered Arenas a max deal.

Gerald Green dunk contest phenom and straight from high school player has signed a one year deal with the Mav's, Gerald has moved around alot and is seen to have Tmac like potential but as yet has come no where close to living up to it.

James Posey is being pursued by Boston, Los Angeles Lakers and Detroit after opting out.

Corey Magette is getting several looks, teams that have contact him include, Orlando, Boston, Utah, San Antonio and Miami, he personally would love to go back to Orlando and the team plans to offer a mult-year deal at their mid-level exception. Other teams may be able to offer Corey a little more money so it will be interesting how this plays out.

Tyronn Lue chose Dallas over Phoenix last year when he was waived by Sacramento; Phoenix wanted the PG then and they want him now, Steve Kerr is trying to get the player signed to backup Nash.

Jarvis Hayes is being pursued by both the Suns and the Spurs; he is thought to have a game much like James Posey, can score, can defend and makes good decisions with the ball.

Chris Duhon, has met with the Knicks and has scheduled a visit with Orlando I'd look for a decision by mid-week.

Brent Barry is high on both the Suns and Lakers free-agency wish lists.

Ron Artest believes he made a mistake not opting out, speaking very candidly on the subject yesterday, I'd look for him to get moved, he has an expiring contract and some value.

Josh Smith is meeting with Philly today to talk about possibly signing there.

Waving Good-Bye To a Pseudo-Era Out West

A Daily Babble Production

A short-lived era is ending, and it looks to be a rough break-up for all parties involved.

As many of you are already no doubt aware, the Los Angeles Clippers netted the first major catch of the free agency season (Gerald Green notwithstanding) in point guard Baron Davis.

Alas, by virtue of one of the sillier by-laws of the league's collective bargaining agreement, this means that the Baron can no longer be a Golden State Warrior.

Given what fans across the league won't be seeing anymore, I can't help but feel a bit bummed out by this.

Free Agent News

MyFox Houston reports that Gerald Green has agreed to a one year contract with the Dallas Mavericks. I really hope Gerald can make it there. I like Gerald and he has a ton of potential because of his athleticism, but he just never seemed to get it. Maybe Rick Carlisle can finally get him to realize that potential.

ESPN is reporting that Baron Davis has agreed to sign with the Clippers after opting out of his contract with the Warriors on Monday. He gave up $17.8 million in the last year of his deal with the Warriors and will receive a five-year deal worth an estimated $65 million from the Clippers.

According to ESPN Insider, Gilbert Arenas has received max bids from both the Wizards and the Warriors. With Baron gone, the Warriors are in the market for a point guard and can afford to pay for one.

The NY Daily News reports that the Knicks have made an offer to Chris Duhon to shore up their back court. The Knicks are expected to offer Duhon a two-year deal worth roughly half of the mid-level exception, totaling around $6 million. According to SportingNews, after meeting with the Knicks, Duhon went to Orlando to meet with the Magic. He was contacted by five teams on the first day of free agency including Cleveland, Sacramento, New York, Orlando and, surprisingly, Boston.

According to the Press Enterprise, Andrew Bynum is seeking a max contract extension. Hopefully the Lakers are forced to give it to him and will leave James Posey alone.

SacBee has the Kings offering their full MLE to sign Beno Udrih.

As reported in the Herald, the Celtics have made an offer to James Posey and hope to keep him. Posey has said that he wants to stay with the Celtics and the Celtics are saying they want to keep him, but there are also other teams who are going to do their best to lure him away from the champs. Posey's hometown Cleveland Cavaliers are said to be putting together an offer, in addition to the Detroit Pistons, New Orleans Hornets, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets. New Jersey, which came close to signing Posey last summer before he was talked into going with the Celtics, also may revisit the situation, though like most teams the Nets are carving out cap space for 2010.

According to ESPN Insider, the Magic think highly of Clippers guard Corey Maggette, but it will almost certainly take a sign-and-trade deal to lure him back to Orlando. Maggette started his career in Orlando and still owns a home in Central Florida (where his parents live). But getting him would likely cost the Magic Most Improved Player Hedo Turkoglu in a trade, and that's a deal GM Otis Smith isn't eager to make. The Celtics have also made Maggette an offer but with an offer. The guys on Sports Tonight speculated that the Celtics may be offering Ray Allen in a sign and trade and the Clippers have wanted Ray Allen for some time so who knows. They may also have offered him the LLE and hoped that his desire for a ring would overwhelm his desire for a big contract. According to MySA the Spurs are prepared to offer Maggette the full MLE for the next year. Maggette wants to go to a contender and has suggested that he would be willing to take less for a chance at a ring. San Antonio is definitely still a contender as are the Celtics so both would probably be in his list of possibilities. It may depend on who he thinks has the best chance to win it all.

The Rockets are pursuing Brent Barry according to the Houston Chronicle. The Celtics went after him before he went back to San Antonio. But, I expect him to stay in Texas.

High Flyers

I can't wax nearly as eloquent about our new draft prospects as Jeff
would be able to. Allow me, then, to let youtube do the talking.

J.R. Giddens:

rD58bsFoSGo

That's athleticism. Unlike Gerald Green, this kid can defend and rebound, too.

Bill Walker:

4sSsOtnku8M

Walker is the kid I'm really excited about. Let's hope that knee holds up, because if it does, this kid is going to be the steal of the draft. We needed some athleticism off our bench, and this draft brought it in a big way.

Of course, none of us should get too giddy about these guys, but having gone into the draft with the #30 and #60 picks, I don't feel too bad about walking away with Giddens and Walker (and, um, Semih Erden).

For anybody who cares about those types of things, draft grades are in. Chad Ford (http://sports.espn.go.com/nbadraft/draft/tracker/round?draftyear=2008) gives us a B , SI.com's Marty Burns (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/marty_burns/06/27/grades/index.html?eref=T1) and the Sporting News' Sam Smith (http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=428492) gave us a C , and MSNBC (http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/25400111/?pg=4#spt_NBA_draft_reportcard2008) gave us a C+ . I say that outside of Ford, they don't know what they're talking about.

Also, old...

Don?'t Call It A Comeback

It seems like Banner 17 happened in a blur. One minute we were picking our hearts up off
the floor after the draft lottery and the next we were jumping on tables with
Paul Pierce. Part of what has our heads
spinning is the total roster turnover from a year ago. For the most part we've been rooting for Paul
Pierce and laundry (the green and white jerseys).

There are players that we rooted for and enjoyed watching a
year ago that had to leave to make all this happen. Those players are gone but not forgotten. Many of us still pull for guys like Al
Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, and Delonte West.
In fact, there's been an understandable sentiment to bring some of those
guys back. Wouldn't Gomes look great
coming off the bench? Wouldn't Delonte
be a viable backup to Rondo? Someone is
going to take one last flyer on Gerald Green, why not us?

Forget it folks. I
know that Antoine Walker's second stint in green taught us that anything is
possible, but I don't see these guys coming back. Not for any one reason, but each player seems
to have moved on and will likely stay gone.
Let us look...

Banner 17: How We Got Here

It's funny to think about now, but it wasn't that long ago we were justifying tanking our season to grab Oden or Durant. One of these guys was going to "change the face of the franchise" and "turn us into a contender for years to come." I was no better than anybody else. I had the next 10 or so years of my life planned around watching Kevin Durant draped in green. I only half-jokingly told my wife to start saving some money because we were moving downtown and buying season tickets. Kevin Durant truly felt like the light at the end of our tumultuous tunnel. So, on draft lottery night, when our collective dreams exploded in the form of the number five pick, I was literally left standing alone in my apartment, staring at the wall, not knowing if I wanted to punch it or cry.

The 411 on Fantasy Basketball This Week

It still looks like a very good possibility in both the Eastern and Western Conferences for some
down to the wire action. With Houston putting the rest of the league on notice that hard nosed
play can propel you to the top, it's also setting an example for the bubble teams like New Jersey
who snuck into the #8 spot in the East this week.

This kind of action can be very good for Fantasy Basketball, as there will be more players available
for a competitive Fantasy Finals that many leagues are fast approaching.

On the player movement front, it remains a bit stagnant, but here's the latest from this week.

Gerald Green Released by the Rockets

The Houston Rockets have released Gerald Green to make room for a front court player because of injuries to Carl Landry and Yao Ming. I really feel bad for Gerald. He was so excited to be going to Houston from Minnesota. He said it was a dream come true and now he is a player without a team. Maybe another team who need scoring will pick him up for the rest of the season, but he probably will need to prove himself to a team in the off season to get any kind of deal. He may even need to go to the D-League in order to get enough experience to make another NBA roster. I like Gerald. He has a ton of potential but hasn't yet figured out how to transfer that potential into solid play. He had the Slam Dunk contest going for him last season, but now doesn't even have that. I really hope he can pick up his career somewhere and finally find his place in the league. Wherever he goes, I wish him luck. Here is a look at Gerald in better days for him.

Dwight Howard seems to have gotten his revenge for being slighted in last year's dunk contest. He claimed that the judge's did not entirely understand his dunks, and punished for simply being big.

This year, Gerald Green should have a beef.

Dwight Howard Credits Soulja Boy for Superman Idea

First of all there is a conspiracy in the NBA as David Stern was pushing Dwight Howard as the replacement for the already taken Superman nickname, which has belonged to Shaq for 15 years now. Anyone remember "Superman Emblem"? Shaq has it tattooed on his left bicep. Stern's jump for joy reaction to Dwight Howard's dunk seemed a bit pre-planned. Don't get me wrong, I have been a huge fan of Howard since he entered the NBA. He just needs to show respect to Shaq or pick a different Super hero to use as his creedo. By the way I've yet to see an interview from Shaq about this. Can you ever remember an All Star weekend going by without interviews and videos from Shaq? That's where my conspiracy theory comes into play.

Part to of my notes from the Superman Dunk is the interview by Cheryl Miller with Howard and Gerald Green as they were waiting for the text messaging votes to be counted. Howard credited Soulja Boy's dance hit "Crank Dat" and it's "Superman dat ho" dance that stemmed from it as his inspiration. Now what if all the suits in the NBA and David Stern really knew what that song was all about? He would go from All Star night hero to the Michael Vick or Don Imus status in the NBA for disrespecting women.

The Urban Dictionary's website defines the term as the following: "when you ejaculate on a girls back then put a blanket on her so when she stands up the blanket sticks therefore making her look like she has a cape."

Good thing David Stern didn't know that, and it's a bad thing that Shaq wasn't involved in the festivities this weekend. I really missed him.
