Game Notes: SIUE at Illinois

by Quinn Peterson
A day after Jay-Z and N.E.R.D. rocked the stage, Assembly Hall was still the place to be for excitement. This time the spaz was for over the start of the regular season for Illinois men’s basketball, as the Illini defeated the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars, 96-69.
Friday marked the beginning of a new era for Illinois.
You know that recruiting drought that’s plagued the Illini over the past few years? Gone.
Expectations were high for Illinois’ class of recruits t...

Look out for the masked man

THE `BURBS - "Did Dunleavy suffer a setback?"

That was one of the first questions I was asked after the Pacers signed Luther Head.

The answer: No.

Dunleavy is still doing well in his rehabilitation from knee surgery earlier this year. So there's no need to start panicking about Mikey D.

Larry Bird has had his eye on Head for a couple of years. He mentioned Head's name to me earlier this summer when we were talking about free agents.

"It was too hard to pass up,&quo...

Source: Luther Head To The Pacers

Before Allen Iverson signed with Memphis, I said that I was surprised to see Luther Head still available on the free agent market; and that if the Grizzlies don’t pick him up, some team will before training camp starts. Well, according to Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star, that team is the Indiana Pacers.

McGrady is out for three weeks. I, for one, am shocked. But T-Mac injury jokes are old and boring, so let's ask the real question: where does this put the Rockets in the meantime? Luther Head has apparently jumped into the starting role, despite racking up 4 minutes in the game prior to T-Mac's ...

Unsung Hero Day: Luther Head

Don Langridan at sports blog, With Malice, has dubbed today as Unsung Hero Day. The point is to recognize the guys who toil and work hard every day, for no recognition. We should appreciate the role-players who come on and give that valuable 2-5 minutes. Without them, there is no NBA. Without further ado, I pronounce my unsung hero: Luther Head.

By definition, Luther Head probably does not even qualify as a candidate on Unsung Hero Day. He is only in his third year of play in the NBA, playing all three years with the Houston Rockets. This year, he is averaging his lower points per game total at 7.5PPG, down from his high of 10.9PPG that he averaged last year. Still, in his first two years, he logged 80 games a piece and is on pace to come close to that mark again this year. He is definitely what you call a role-player.

Luther has seen his minutes decrease this year, which is definitely partly due to the formation of a rejuvenated, young, and very talented Houston Rockets team that at one point this season, went 22 games without losing. Luther Head still has a long career ahead of him where he could potentially one day earn a starting spot on an NBA roster. My personal opinion; however, is that he will be a role-player off the bench until the day he retires.

As a player who really fits at the two spot, Luther is undersized, at 6?3. He was able to hide his lack of size when playing college ball at the University of Illinois and definitely shined on the courts growing up in Chicago. He was part of a great team in college, playing alongside Deron Williams and Dee Brown. Luther always displays his heart and passion for the game in every minute that he logs. That's what makes him an NBA unsung hero.

Day 128 of 170: The Day the Celtics Clinched a Playoff Spot

Line of the Night: On the night when Boston clinched their spot, and the Jazz won their 17th straight game, LeBron James (6.35) overshadowed both. 50 points and 10 assists will do that. I like how they threw in the interaction with Jay-Z at the end there. I just hope by the time James gets to New Jersey Brooklyn, they can assemble a better supporting cast than Cleveland.
