10 Reasons to Watch the NBA This Year

I have to admit in recent years I haven't been much of a NBA fan. Ever since my favorite player of all time (Shawn Kemp) became irrelevant, my favorite team left town (Charlotte Hornets), and the strike in the late 90's, the NBA has become like the ex-girlfriend that every now and then when you're bored you think about calling her up, but then remember the reason you left her in the first place, and you put the phone back down.

Rotowhine's Fantasy Basketball Preview: 10 Guys to Avoid

Basketball season arrives at the perfect time for Greg as his baseball season just ended in disaster and his football team continues to flounder. The author of The Whine Cellar has no idea why anyone would give his fearless predictions anything more than the obligatory glance, especially after last year's basketball calamity. But fear not faithful readers as Greg may not know who is going to be good, but he's typically right on the money when it comes to who is going to potentially kill your season.

No Other Invites

Marc Spears reports: (http://www.boston.com/sports/basketball/articles/2008/09/28/smith_and_hawks_aim_high/?page=full)

Free throws: The Celtics have 16 players on their training camp roster and no more will be added, general manager Danny Ainge said. Sam Cassell and newcomer Darius Miles do
not have guaranteed contracts. Even so, the Celtics might waive another
player with a low contract or make a trade to accommodate both Cassell
and Miles (the roster limit is 15). We've got a month to find out,
Ainge said

Also, most likely not related to the Celtics...

An Eastern Conference executive said don't be surprised if a notable
trade or two is made during the preseason. We say keep an eye on
Marbury, Nets forward Vince Carter, Heat forward Shawn Marion, Nuggets guard Allen Iverson, and Warriors forward Al Harrington

That Other Former Celtic (and Point Guard) In Miami

A Daily Babble Production

With the drafting of Michael Beasley and the improved health of Dwyane
Wade and Shawn Marion, the Miami Heat are planning to take a big jump
back toward respectability from last seaon's embarrassing NBA-worst 15-win
campaign. This means that the other two starting slots in their
lineup have been and will be subject to more than a bit of scrutiny.

Prior to the Jamaal Magloire signing, we made sure to get the occasional poke in at the pivot, which was previously inhabited by former Celtic Mark Blount, a charter member of the Kill It For the Second Half of a Contract Year and Mail It In From There On Out All-Stars. We've also done plenty of babbling about the point guard spot, giving plenty of love to the pre-ejection-from-rookie-camp Mario Chalmers (index.php?option=com_content task=view id=3796 Itemid=260) and wondering about the potential for Damon Jones to return (index.php?option=com_content task=view id=3791 Itemid=260) or even Stephon Marbury to hop aboard (index.php?option=com_content task=view id=3738 Itemid=260).

Yet somehow through of all the Heat msuing, it seems we've glossed right over one more man who is already in the midst of the mix at the point in Miami, a man who has green connections to...

RotoEvil's exclusive 1+ Block, 77% FT club (Draft Guide sample #2)

What do Amare Stoudemire, David West, and Danny Granger have in common? All 3 were mentioned last year in my 1+ Block, 77% FT article.

Throughout history, the top shot-blockers have usually been poor free throw shooters. However, there are a handful of guys who can block 1+ shot per game without hurting your team's FT%, making them extremely valuable fantasy players.

I call this exclusive group the 1+ Block, 77% FT club. In '07-08, only 10 players made the cut. The year before, there were only 9. To qualify, a player must play in 40+ games, average 1+ block, and shoot 77% or better from the line.

First, I will list the 10 players who made the club last season, show what I wrote about them a year ago, recap what they did in '07-08, and then predict how those stats may change in the upcoming season. After that, I will analyze the 8 leading candidates to join the club in '08-09. If you're ready to dominate your league, then just click on the link!

RotoEvil's exclusive 1+ Three, 47% FG club (Draft Guide sample #1)

When you attempt a lot of threes, your FG% usually pays the price. This is especially true in fantasy hoops, which is why I created the 1+ Three, 47% FG club. In '07-08, only 13 players made the cut. The year before, there were only 12. To qualify, a player must play in 40+ games, average 1+ three, and shoot 47% or better from the field.

By targeting some of these players, you will achieve a superb balance between threes & FG%, immediately gaining an advantage over your opponents. If you want to dominate your league, plus find out what Steve Nash, Brent Barry, and Mike Miller have done that no one else in NBA history has, then just click on the link...

Weekly Fix Episode 20 - Fantasy Basketball Preview Pt. 2

Zach Harper, Brandon Gallawa, and Andy Eisner actually decide to discuss basketball for pretty much an entire episode of the Weekly Fix. In Part 2 of the Weekly Fix Fantasy Basketball Preview, this trio of fantasy experts discuss who should be ranked higher, who should be ranked lower, who will do better and who should be a sleeper for multiple positions plus offer drafting strategies. The positions they discuss in the Part 2 of this Fantasy Preview are :

1. Fantasy Small Forwards - Is Josh Smith still good enough to be Top 3? Danny Granger or Rudy Gay? Where does Caron Butler fit in? Is Jamario Moon the new Andrei Kirilenko? Kevin Durant or Carmelo Anthony?
2. Fantasy Power Forwards - Elton Brand or Tim Duncan? Is Michael Beasley worthy of where he'll be drafted? Is Nick Collison going to be overlooked by everybody once again? Can Al Jefferson stop Wolves' fans from hating their basketball lives?

Be sure to listen, tell your friends, and continue to Support the Habit.

Money To Spend

I love it when Chad Ford breaks down NEXT year's free agent class. (http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=ford_chad page=09FreeAgents-080915 campaign=rss source=NBAHeadlines) The list includes guys with early termination clauses like Kobe and Boozer (and Mark Blount, ...right). Then there are restricted free agents like Andrew Bynum, and finally true free agents with some pretty big names. Shawn Marion, Allen Iverson, Ron Artest, Lamar Odom, Jason Kidd, etc.

As a bonus, he always breaks down which teams will have cap room, which is always fun. Of course a lot can happen between now and then, but it is interesting to see who will be next year's 76ers.

Given current projections, five teams -- the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Memphis Grizzlies, the Portland Trail Blazers, the Miami Heat and the Indiana Pacers -- will have significant money to spend in 2009.

What does this have to do with the Celtics? Aside from playing spoiler to the Blazers cap hopes, probably not a whole lot. But like I said, a lot can change in a year and it always helps to keep an eye on how the market is moving.
