Oklahoma City cheers for Mason

OKLAHOMA CITY – Desmond Mason was the last Kings starter introduced Thursday night, and he received loud applause in a region that knows him well.
Mason played college basketball at Oklahoma State. He was with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008-09 before sustaining a season-ending knee injury in late January.
Mason also played in Oklahoma City from 2005 to 2007 when the town became a second home for the displaced New Orleans Hornets after Hurricane Katrina.
So it was a nice time for Ma...

I have very little subjective observation of Desmond Mason's defense to fall back on. I was not a particularly devout connosseiur of Milwaukee Bucks basketball much of this decade, and I only got a few non-Kings Thunder games in 2008-09. Mason does have a solid defensive reputation, though.
What do the numbers tell us? If Mason will get a) minutes, or b) potent...

Sactown Royalty : Mason Signing Nonsensical

The Kings signed F/G Desmond Mason to a one-year deal earlier this week, despite the Oklahoma State product having played in only 19 games for the Thunder a year ago. Sacramento coach Paul Westphal rationalized the pact, partially, by declaring, “The message I want to send to the young players and probably to the [...]

30Q: Desmond Mason? Really?

30Q asks the important questions about the Kings all through September.
Sam Amick of the Sacramento Bee did the heavy lifting in getting Paul Westphal to explain the signing of Desmond Mason to a one-year, partially guaranteed deal. (The move, in the fashion it's defended by the coach, seems to be Westphal-driven. That's the feeling I get talked to others, as well.) Since Mason is now a King, it seems appropriate to ask a question about him.
Hence,
Desmond Mason? Really?

Desmond Mason is a King

The Artist Formerly Known as Desmond Mason must prove his worth in Sac-Town: ” Is he the Desmond Mason of old or the old Desmond Mason? That’s the question the Kings signed on to have answered Thursday, when they added the 31-year-old … Mason, the former Oklahoma City Thunder swingman who is entering his 10th season, was grounded by a right knee hyperextension Jan. 28 and underwent arthroscopic surgery days later. Now he must prove to the Kings that his career can be airborn...

I don't get it. The risk is small, sure -- it's been reported that Desmond Mason is a King on a one-year minimum salary contract. Mason will earn $1.187 million (assuming the contract is fully guaranteed), but the league will pay $362,000 of that, so the Kings will actually put out $825,000.
But just because a move has little risk doesn't make it a good ...

Desmond Mason a Candidate to Fill Denver's Wing-Position Need

by Chris TomassonFiled under: NuggetsThe Denver Nuggets took care of their initial top offseason priority when they re-signed center Chris "Birdman'' Andersen in July. But since then another avian-related need has emerged. That would be the wing position. In free agency, the Nuggets lost starting shooting guard Dahntay Jones to Indiana and top reserve small forward Linas Kleiza to Greece. Then the NBA suspended J.R. Smith, the heir apparent as a starter to Jones, for next season&...

Mason Will Not Re-Sign With The Oklahoma City Thunder

ESPN.com reports that now former Oklahoma City Thunder's shooting guard Desmond Mason will not re-sign with the team. The talks were already breaking down after negotiations were trying to be made all summer.Says Mason's agent:"Desmond is not ready to be relegated to a cheerleader and relegated to a mentor for the younger players,. He's got a lot left in the tank. We never discussed money. It wasn't going to be a dollars decision because his heart was in Oklahoma."I ...
