Daily Dribbles 4/8/13: The Comedown Machine

Nathaniel S. Daniel - Getty Images Edit: Payton Wales

Good afternoon and welcome to the Daily Dribbles, where you have come to get some type of basketball knowledge and news, oh yeah, and snark. I missed you all last week due to a vacation. I'm sorry about that. Well, sorta of, I can't say I was losing a lot of sleep over not getting you news, but I still missed giving you my voice. We missed some things, obviously, so I'll hit those quickly for you here and give you my thoughts as we come down the final stretch of the season.

Miami sat two of its stars against the Spurs in San Antonio. The world lost its mind, saying two wrongs don't make a right, which references an incident from earlier in the season when Gregg Popovich sat his stars Tony Duncan and Manu Ginobli from a game hosted by the Miami Heat.

Fans are angry Miami coach Erik Spoelstra and the Heat have not been fined for the incident and those people are morons. Dwyane Wade was hurt games before ...

'The Glove' reportedly picks 'The Iceman' as basketbal HOF presenter

The nominees for the 2013 Basketball Hall of Fame are surfacing and listed is former SuperSonics guard Gary Payton.

"The Glove," who had a phenomenal career in Seattle and won his only NBA title with the 2006 Miami Heat, will reportedly pick San Antonio Spurs legend George "The Iceman" Gervin to be his presenter along with former Jazz guard John Stockton.

“John Stockton is someone that I respect and was the toughest basketball player I played (against),’’ Payton had said. “George Gervin, because I admired him ever since I was (growing up). Those are guys that I respect a lot.’’

This isn't the first time "The Iceman" has been picked to be a presenter. David Robinson picked Gervin to be his presenter when he was inducted in 2009.

The Hall of Fame requires that presenters also be members of the Hall of Fame. Gervin was inducted in 1996.

Report: Gary Payton Elected on First Ballot to Basketball Hall of Fame, Selects John Stockton as Presenter

The Basketball of Fame will add The Glove.
Gary Payton, who played for the Seattle Supersonics, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics and Miami Heat, has been elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame, according to Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com.
Payton is considered one of the best point guards in NBA history. He was a nine-time All-Star and an NBA champion and averaged 16.3 points and 6.7 assists per game. His nickname, “The Glove,” came from his stellar defense: In his 17-year career, Payton was a nine-time member of the NBA All-Defensive Team and was the Defensive Player of the Year in 1996.
John Stockton will present Payton at the induction ceremony, according to SI.com. Bernard King, Mitch Richmond, Tim Hardaway, Guy Lewis and Maurice Cheeks are the other Hall of Fame finalists.

Gary Payton Elected Into 2013 Class of Basketball Hall of Fame

It will be until Monday when we find out who will be in this year’s class of the Basketball Hall of Fame. Gary Payton was one of the finalists for the honor, and as NBA.com’s Scott Howard-Cooper tells us, The Glove has made it in.
Gary Payton very excited yesterday after getting word he had been elected to the Hall of Fame. Official announcement coming Monday.
— Scott Howard-Cooper (@SHowardCooper) April 4, 2013

Payton was truly remarkable in his NBA career. The 6-4, 180-pound point guard was best known for his defensive play, which led him to becoming the Defensive Player of the Year in 1996 and nine-time member on the All-NBA Defensive First Team. He was only the fifth guard to win DPOY and no guard has won it since.
However, Payton wasn’t too shabby putting up points as well, having 21,813 in his 18-year career. He averaged about 16 points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals per game on 47-percent shooting.
He was well known for his time with the Seattle SuperSonics, where he spent the

Gary Payton Reportedly Inducted Into Hall Of Fame

Reports Thursday morning revealed that former Seattle SuperSonics (I guess they’re all “former” at this point) guard Gary Payton has been inducted to the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame. The official announcement won’t come until Monday, but I can’t wait that long to talk about my second-favorite player of all time. (If you’re wondering who my favorite player of all time is, it’s Shawn Kemp, but the only Hall of Fame he will ever make is Bill Simmons’ hypothetical Pyramid, so I’ll gladly accept my second favorite player being enshrined into the real deal as a consolation prize).
It must be noted that Payton’s induction couldn’t have been timed more perfectly, considering when the mid-summer enshrinement ceremony rolls around, it’s very possible the team he his most associated with could be headed back to the Pacific Northwest. Also, Nike, taking Payton’s “No Duh” Hall candidacy into account, pushed his Zoom Flight ’98 (aka, The Glove) retro back to an October release, hoping to

Gary Payton, Bernard King highlight Hall of Fame finalists

On Friday in Houston, the Basketball Hall of Fame announced the finalists who will vie to enter its hallowed halls when the official entrants are announced in April at the Final Four. Among the notable names in the finalists include Sonics point guard Gary Payton, New York Knicks legend Bernard King, former Kentucky coach Rick Pitino and legendary UNLV coach Jerry Tarkanian. The other two wings of the Warriors' Run TMC crew, Mitch Richmond and Tim Hardaway, are also among the finalists.

This is an incredibly accomplished group and there will be some debate for some of them. But all the finalists are incredibly skilled players and are worthy of at least the discussion of entrance into the Hall in Springfield.

Gary Payton Headlines First-Year HOF Candidates

Today the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA released the list of candidates for induction in 2013.

The biggest name on the list of first-time nominees is Gary Payton.

Though Payton is mostly known for his 13-year tenure with the Seattle SuperSonics, he was a member of the Boston Celtics for a short time and had a major hand in the creation of the team we see today.

Payton was a nine-time All-Star and Defensive Player of the Year in 1996. He won a championship late in his career with the Miami Heat in 2006. In between all that, Payton played 77 games with the Celtics.

Over the summer of 2004, Payton was moved to Boston by the Lakers along with Rick Fox and a 2006 first-round draft pick for Chucky Atkins, Chris Mihm and Jumaine Jones.

Despite not being a big fan of the move to Boston, Payton became the starting point guard. Then after being traded late in the season and immediately waived by the Atlanta Hawks, Payton proved a changed man and returned to the Celtics.

Will Gary Payton be a first-ballot Hall of Famer?

Gary Payton isnt taking for granted he will be first-ballot Hall of Famer. But lets just say hes ready if it happens.

Payton already knows who his Hall of Famer presenters will be whenever he might be enshrined.

I would name two of them, John Stockton and George Gervin, Payton said in a phone interview with FOX Sports Florida. "John Stockton is someone that I respect and was the toughest basketball player I played (against). George Gervin, because I admired him ever since I was (growing up). Those are guys that I respect a lot.

Payton, who played the final two of his 17 NBA seasons with Miami, retired in 2007 and is now eligible for induction after the required five-year waiting period. Finalists will be announced Feb. 15 during the NBAs All-Star Weekend in Houston and the class of 2013 revealed April 8 at the Final Four in Atlanta.

The point guard, who had his greatest years in Seattle from 1990-2003, was a nine-time All-Star who averaged 16.3 points and 6.7 assists. Nicknamed The Glove, Payton was

Gary Payton is The Competitor.
If you know Gary Payton, you know he is fearless and brash, and has a mouth that won’t quit.
There isn’t much that he doesn’t feel he’s good at, and now a new show may be coming that will put that confidence to the test.
“The Competitor, with Gary Payton” gives anyone, anywhere, the chance to compete against GP at anything.
In this promo video he takes a shot at bartending, bowling and making pizza….

Who won that bowling match between he and Zab Judah?
GP also called out Terrell Owens, Steve Harvey, and Reggie Miller.
Who will answer the call first? It really doesn’t matter because nothing has changed. Payton refuses to lose.
Gary Payton, who played 19 seasons in the NBA, and won a championship as a member of the Miami Heat in 2006, is a 2013 candidate for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Seattle basketball fans haven't been the same since they lost their beloved franchise of the SuperSonics. Get it?Anyways, Seattle is now trying to work on getting a new NBA team for the city. Maybe they could bring the Sonics back? For the past few days, city mayor Mike McGinn and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer joined in discussion with David Stern on bringing a team to Seattle.According to the Seattle Times, the fans had a rally Thursday to show support for bringing an NBA team. Former Sonics greats such as Shawn Kemp and Gary Payton showed up for it: Instead, a two-hour rally organized by Chris Hansen, the lead financier behind the plan, served as an opportunity to remember the Sonics' history and fire up those hoping

The Seattle Supersonics are in the news today!

That’s a good thing!
A short while ago some interesting tweets came down from former UW Husky and Seattle Supersonics star Detlef Schrempf.

big news coming out today about the Sonics! We are on our way!

This time it is legit! Sonics will be back! Stay tuned

Now I have no idea what to make of this, but it appears Chris Hansen is going to be on Sports Radio KJR with Mitch in the Morning at 8:30 this morning.

Seattle SuperSonics
Mitch has gone on the record as saying that Chris Hansen knew all about Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn’s visit with David Stern in New York.
When this news originally came down most people assumed Chris Hansen knew nothing about this visit, and that McGinn had possibly gone rogue.
All we’d heard thus far from the Hansen camp was to do the following.
1. Contact your elected officials - Let them know you support a new Arena in Seattle’s Stadium District.
2. Follow So
