Show Me the $$$: What to do with Ryan Howard? I briefly touched on this touchy subject a few days ago, and I feel it's time to revisit it. The Phillies got 3 homers, 2 by 1st baseman Ryan Howard (31st and 32nd HRs), pounded losing Marlins' starter Rick VandenHurk for 6 runs in 2 1/3 innings, capitalized a Florida error and 7 walks issued by Florida pitchers and saw veteran lefthander Jamie Moyer and young J.D. Durbin combine to hold Florida to 1 run on 8 hits as they rolled to an 11-1 victory. Moyer won his 10th game of the season against 8 losses and Durbin was credited with his first major league save.

David Bell Traded to the Brewers

In return, the Phillies receive Wilfredo Laureano, a Class A RP with a 3.96 ERA. Although they don't get much, Pat Gillick acknowledged that the Phillies had no intention of resigning David Bell at the end of the season. He was in the final season of a 4-year, $17 Million dollar deal. Abraham Nunez and his .157 average will take over at third It's a nice move for the Brewers, who despite trading Carlos Lee, are still making moves to compete this season. In reality, they only give up cash to acquire Bell, who is still owed $1.6 Million this year. He's not great, but with Corey Koskie still suffering from concussion-like symptoms, he can definitely help out at third. He's by no means a great, but he was hitting .361 this month and is riding a long a errorless streak.

The Beer Leaguer takes some parting shots at the current Phills squad before Pat Gillick and the front office do some major house cleaning over the course of the next few days. Philadelphia is 44-53 and probably lucky to have a record as good as that. Poor Coaching, terrible defense, and failed experiements have led to the downfall of the Phillies in '06 and unless some major changes occur, there isn't much reason to have the same hope entering next season as there was entering this one.
