Questions About the Lineup Will Start to Come into Focus

The guard situation is tricky, being that if Marbury is here he has to play. He's a better player than Duhon, but he's proven that he can't share the backcourt with Crawford. They are an awful defensive pair. There's something to be said about that as Marbury couldn't share a backcourt with Steve Francis, come to think of it, besides Kerry Kittles can anyone name a two-guard who actually had a shred of success playing with Steph?

My first NBA game at Madison Square Garden

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_9mOOiaZ4l4I/R5cYtufZdBI/AAAAAAAAAUY/nsE_0N1D7gU/s320/9ec981cafd88235067a7f9c960b02a50-getty-76075011nb009_celtics_knicks.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5158619072029094930" />
January 21, 2008.

Thirteen games on deck in the NBA calendar.

But for me, none more important than the one here in New York City.

My first game at Madison Square Garden.

The 13-27 New York Knicks versus the 32-6 Boston Celtics.

Their records predict the most likely outcome. But then again, the Knicks had won 4 of their last 5 (against Detroit, Washington, New Jersey, and the equally hapless Miami respectively).

Maybe the Knicks could make a game out of it? Well, there was that hope.

But I was there to cheer on the Celtics anyway.

Even sported my Mitchell & Ness Larry Bird road jersey.

Truly, there is no such thing as a live experience.

Especially from my great seat. My vantage point.

Some of the highlights:

• With Kanye West's single, "Stronger" being used as the Knicks starting lineup theme music, he is probably raking in the Benjamin's during every home game at MSG.

• Malik Rose comes out into center court prior to the start of the Knicks and Celtics match up to pay tribute to Dr. King on his birthday. He also appeared on the Jumbo Tron. I assumed that was the extent of his participation that afternoon. Any you know what? I was right! These public appearances and pep talks. At least Malik his earning his paycheck.

• Kendrick Perkins was practically pitching a tent or setting up his apartment in the paint during the first quarter scoring on six straight field goals and finishing with 15. Perkins 15 – Knicks 23 after one. He ended up having a career scoring night with 24.

• The Eddy Curry line: Curry is certainly massive but not as tall as Kevin "KG" Garnett who towered above everyone on the court. Eddy takes up a lot of real estate and there was a point in the game when I thought he was going to land on all of the flat screen monitors in the reporters' row. Scary moment!

• Knicks Head Coach (for how much longer? He was thoroughly booed during the introductions.) Isiah Thomas was right on the money when he described the Boston Celtics after the game: Thomas said, "Shit, they got Kevin Garnett." In the contest, KG was awesome. Poetry in motion. From his footwork to his post moves—it seemed like he was running rings around whoever Isiah put on him: Zach Randolph, Eddy Curry, David Lee, Jared Jeffries, and Renaldo Balkman (who guarded KG in the two minutes that he did get to play in the game). Later on, I found out that Garnett finished with his 18th double-double of the season with 20 markers, 13 caroms, and 7 dimes.

• As for Walter "Ray-Ray" Allen, he started slow but finished with 17 points and 8 rebounds (I saw him sneak in a steal a couple from KG). Ray hit two threes and an acrobatic lay-up which I really enjoyed. I'm really hoping that he eventually becomes the all-time leader in the former category.

• Rajon Rondo hit a buzzer-beater to end the half and Boston led by as much as 20 at one point. I was really hoping that the Knicks would make a game out of it and not lose by 45 again like they did up in Boston last November 29 (104-59; It was the Knicks third-worst loss in team history and their second-worst scoring performance of the shot-clock era). Now it wasn't because I am a Knicks fan. But like one fan said behind me, "We didn't pay to see you ref!" If the game ended up well out of hand (and eventually it did with the Celtics winning by 16), KG, Pierce, and Allen would have sat out the fourth—with these tickets, that's not even an option.

• At one point in the game, $60 million dollar man Jared Jeffries (5-year $30 million dollar deal for him; $30 million dollar luxury tax hit for the Knicks—Go Isiah!) seems to have a clear path to the basket for a dunk or lay-up (his choice) after a botched Allen-to-Garnett alley oop play. He flubbed it. BAD! Which resulted in a Garnett dunk on the ensuing play. Jeffries heard it from the crowd. But he was not alone as there were several other occasions wherein the Garden faithful made their displeasure known to the Knicks. Going back to Jeffries, he played 24 minutes and missed all five of his shot attempts. Come to think about it, all he seemed to do on the court is foul and receive the inbounds pass, pivot, and give the leather to a guard.

• I'm a basketball guy. Not a football guy. So when Aaron Ross, Steve Smith, R.W. McQuarters and Plaxico Burress showed up on the Jumbo Tron during breaks in the game, the Garden's atmosphere certainly changed. I'm pretty sure the Knicks wish they had that kind of support.

• Towards the end of the third quarter, I caught a glimpse of Knicks' John Starks making his way to the exits. I was a fan of his back in his Knicks days and it was certainly nice to see him. It was also great to see 73 year-old Celtics legend Tommy Heinsohn who did the game for the C's.
• Nate Robinson's break away dunk looks a lot better live than it did in the Jumbo Tron replays. It didn't even make it to ESPN's SportsCenter's top 10 plays of the day.

• Defensive play of the afternoon? Midway through the third quarter, Quentin Richardson takes out Paul Pierce in the span of 2 ½ minutes via disqualification resulting from double technicals. Pierce has 10 points and 7 dimes which Richardson had a big fat zero after his name in the box scores. ESPN.com's Chris Sheridan has more on that matter.

• Offensive play of the afternoon? After the Knicks kept on going consistently to their two-man game/isolation plays for either the perimeter player (Usually Jamal Crawford) or post players (Either Eddy Curry of Zach Randolph who almost always went to his left). Talk about no imagination! However, there was one particular play wherein all the aforementioned players were on the right side of the court. Randolph had position some 13 feet from the basket and flashed to the three-point area wherein he received the ball from Crawford (who was also hovering around the three point area), pivoted, and lobed the ball to a cutting Curry. Now that was there the whole game. Why didn't Isiah and the Knicks go to it more often?

• With the win, Boston Celtics Head Coach Glenn "Doc" Rivers is officially the Eastern Conference's head coach for the All-Star game in New Orleans next month.

• It just occurred to me. At 13-28 (41 games), the Knicks have now reached the midway point of their NBA schedule.

• Funny moment: While watching ESPN SportsCenter the next day, there was footage of Kevin Garnett celebrating as he was heading to the Celtics bench after a time out. KG handed out high-fives and low-fives to coaches and teammates. By the time he reached the end of the line, he realized that he had someone's gold watch in his right hand as its strap had broken off. It belonged to one of the Celtics assistant coaches.

• Finally, Memorable moment: My Hon and I are seen amongst the crowd in the Jumbo Tron during a break in the fourth quarter.

That was my adventure on this cold January day.

Thanks Hon for making this happen.

Dreams do come true.

----------------
Now playing: The Moldy Peaches - Anyone Else But You
via FoxyTunes

Can the Knicks turn into the 2004-05 Suns?

There are more than a few eerie coincidences in this scenario.

Mike D'Antoni, in his first full year with a sub-30 win team, inherits a roster full of swingmen.
There were 7 players on that Suns team between 6'6" and 6'9' just like the current Knicks roster.

The team will most likely start a point guard whose old team chose not to resign him because they felt they had a better chance to win without him, having a younger, flashier point (Jason Terry, meet Derrick Rose).

Quentin Richardson.
Stephon Marbury.

The starting team is what matters on a D'Antoni team, so let's take a look-see. We will probably get a backcourt of Chris Duhon and Jamal Crawford. Duhon playing like Steve Nash is a stretch, I know, but let's say that he has a great season. Just for purposes of comparison. Jamal Crawford can put up similar numbers as Joe Johnson, but he has to work on his 3-pointer. If he's smart, he started working on it the moment he heard D'Antoni was coming to the Knicks.

At small forward we have ... Quentin Richardson! Q-Rich was productive under D'Antoni, and he's still a 35% 3-pt shooter. He was banged up last season, but there's no indication he won't start the season fully healthy.

Now the dilemma: Can Zach Randolph and Eddy Curry match Amare Stoudamire? The obvious answer is of course not. but what if? Actually, Zach's offensive numbers last year weren't far off Marion's from 04-05.

Z-Bo (07-08): 17.6 ppg, 10.3 rpg
Marion (04-05): 19.4 ppg, 11.3 rpg

But defensively, it's night and day. Marion could play better defense drunk than Randolph could on 'roids. Eddy Curry? He won't get Amare's 26 points per game, and even his 8.9 rebounds per game is stretching it. Defensively, Amare and Shawn combined for 3.1 blocks per game. Nobody on the Knicks last year averaged more than one per game.

So what needs to happen?

1. Cut Stephon Marbury. Getting rid of Marbury worked with the Suns, didn't it? Since Starbury switched teams the Knicks haven't made the playoffs, and the Suns haven't missed it. Seriously though, just pay him off and get rid of him. You paid off everybody else, and if you're saying it's time to get serious, this has to be your first move.

2. Hit the gym and work on the three-pointer. This one should be self-explanatory.

3. Find a way to resolve the center position. This is obviously easier said than done. Maybe by tracking down the trade-exception you can steal an unhappy big man off a losing team. Andrew Bogut, Emeka Okafor and Weird Al Jefferson come to mind. Actually, Emeka's new mondo contract and Charlotte's love of swingmen, maybe that could be a good fit.

4. Get Steve Nash a Chris Duhon costume, and then fake his death.

5. Trade your entire bench for Marcus Camby and Al Thornton. Seriously, I think this could work. Al Thornton may be one or two years away from being a 20 and 10 guy, and Marcus is still the best defensive center as long as KG is sticking with the I'm-a-power-forward shtick. You then have Duhon, Crawford, Q-Rich, Thornton and Camby. Sign a couple of scrubs, and you make the playoffs for sure in the East.

6. Capture a leprechaun and force it to take you to its pot of gold. Then use the gold to bribe a magician into hypnotizing a genie. While hypnotized, get him to grant you unlimited wishes. And then start wishing, baby, cause it'll never happen!

What we need from you: Quentin Richardson

We should expect you to play solid backup minutes at the 2/3 depending how Gallinari develops. You'll contribute solid defense, and we know you'll be in top shape, and it stands to reason that your leadership and talent will be a strong factor. Your contract is long and tough to trade, so you'll have to be comfortable with being a role player. But that doesn't mean you should go quietly.

Junebugs in July

RaptorsForum Contributor - LX

The Raptors of the past two seasons were similar to the Grizzlies under Hubie Brown. They surprised people, over-achieved and raised expectations, all while making use of a deep bench that was often indistinguishable from the starting lineup in terms of abilities. And that depth went from being a notable strength that the coach did a good job of taking advantage of, to a cause of division that in the Grizzlie's case lead to a full-scale rebellion, while in Toronto it brought recognition that within all that depth there was no way to find a solid second option to Bosh or the kind of toughness that was lost when Jorge Garbajosa suffered his terrible injury. In Memphis, Hubie Brown lost his locker-room, and his job. In Toronto, Sam Mitchell succeeded in at least keeping the ship upright while storms brewed all season long, beginning with the turmoil of Garbajosa's status, moving through the various difficulties represented in the form of Andrea Bargnani, on through any number of players unable to fill roles with key pieces missing due to injury, and ending with two point guards outgrowing their ability to benefit from sharing the same duties. The season was a disappointment, and many fans called for "blowing it all up" as the Grizzlies had, but there was enough left intact here that they could still find something to build upon.

More than the clashing of egos that Hubie had to deal with, the Raptors suffered mostly from the lack of Garbajosa. I believe there is a Garbajosa-effect that can be identified from the results of the season he played, and the one where he wore a suit. When he played, he brought the cohesion among the starting line-up and the bench that proved so effective. He could play alongside any part of the rotation, and usually it resulted in steady play no matter who was on the floor or not. The guy knew what needed to be done, and when, and he put those things ahead of stats. As a result, we saw good, effective play from Bargnani, Graham, and Humphreys, and less pressure on the point guards and Bosh. Graham alone picked up Garbo's knack for the ball fake and used it to raise his own basketball IQ by about 35 points. Without Garbajosa there were just too many players trying to do too much, and not all that smartly, particularly from the wings. While the pressure on the defense, the reserves, the franchise player, the number one pick, and the two point guards kept mounting. The Raps became more compartmentalized, and less of a well-constructed team.

You can merely look at the difference at home and on the road during Jorge's first season here. He played poorly on the road in general, not being well-equipped to handle the NBA schedule. And what the team missed in far too many road losses the year before, is just what they missed for all of last season. Or look at the play at home last year, when opposing teams too often appeared completely comfortable, unlike the previous year when Jorge was at his best. The numbers often looked nice, the defense was better statistically, Moon added some athleticism and scoring, but the problem lied exactly where the only numbers that mattered were those in the win column - the area that Garbo proved to be so adept at understanding.

In addressing the weaknesses at the end of the season, Bryan Colangelo noted two particular problem areas - the need for a 20 point scorer (which was assumed to take the form of an aggressive wing player), and the need to improve defensively with an injection of toughness that he felt had been missing since they lost Garbajosa. So the blueprint moving forward looked fairly clear: add a couple of players through transactions and the draft. But for myself, as a fan, I was not hearing many names that made me feel like the puzzle would be closer to being solved. It was more like the feeling of satisfaction, shallow and fleeting, of getting one side of a Rubik's cube a solid color. I really wanted the loss of the Garbajosa-effect to be addressed, and failing that, then I figured they might as well blow the Rubik's pieces up and start gluing them back together as they were meant to be. I wanted a veteran presence who knew what it takes to win, could play physical, remain mentally tough and allow for real gains to be made with an improved defense. And Jermaine O'Neal represents just about the perfect player to fill that resume. In acquiring O'Neal, Colangelo veered away from what looked to be his primary concern - the 20 point scorer - and instead pulled the trigger on the guy who would provide the Garbajosa-effect, while bringing increased leadership and furthering the potential of the offensive threats that already exist here. Had the focus of JO's addition been all about offense, then I would have continued to feel like the team was a little bit lost. But everything that has been said so far points to that Garbajosa-effect. It's all about the defense first. It's all about sacrificing numbers. It's all about the little things, sustaining the attack as a team no matter who's on the floor, keeping everyone accountable, and making opposing teams pay for any letdowns. Actually, it sounds like the Garbo-effect on crack.

Here's a question that doesn't get asked. Would this have happened if we had a D'Antoni at Colangelo's side? Or would we instead be looking at a smart-though-soft player like Diaw? Or a strong-but-hard-headed guy like Maggette? Or who knows what - Quentin Richardson? I think it's safe to say the team would have looked very different. The next step would be to ponder what Bosh might bring in a blockbuster deal to fully complete the makeover. This team would have been like a Junebug in late July; its days numbered; the stink always imminent. And maybe quickly enough a different approach could have worked just fine, although it's not like the formula in Phoenix proved to be timeless and golden. I personally loved the team from two seasons ago, and I'm happy to think that the knowledge of that team, which Sam Mitchell aptly proved that he possessed, allowed for the current team to move forward this season upon what was built then. And now you have Mitchell, along with three solid players like Bosh, O'Neal, and Ocho Loco, all staring down the defining moments of their careers, and looking to bring the rest of the team along with them. Bosh has a chance to prove his abilities defensively, Calderon gets to show his mettle as a starter for a full season, and O'Neal will savor the opportunity to demonstrate that his career is far from over. Everyone else just gets to feed off of that and work to get better. I couldn't ask for anymore. It's no guarantee for success, but it's a hell of a start and a good adrenaline rush for anyone feeling like a Junebug in late July. David Stern - make this summer end already!

It's a New Week Rumors and Free Agent Updates

The Miami Herald is reporting that Tyronn Lue will take a physical for the Heat on Monday and if the results are good, will be given an offer from the team. Lue then said that he would decide between the Phoenix, Boston and Miami. The Heat may be offering it's 1.9 million bi-annual exception. My guess is that the Celtics are offering a veteran's minimum contract. Last week, Lue said that Phoenix was his first choice but he feels that Miami would be a good situation, as unlike in Boston or Phoenix, he would be a starter for the Heat. Boston has the benefit that Kevin Garnett is one of his best friends.

The Boston Globe has this little tidbit at the bottom of an article:

Possibly the biggest surprise of the first round of the recent NBA draft was IUPUI guard George Hill being selected by the Spurs with the 26th pick. But if that didn't happen, could Hill have ended up a Celtic? Hill was projected by many as a second-round pick and wasn't even listed among the 123 prospects in the NBA's predraft media guide. But after Hill's introductory news conference in San Antonio, his agent, Michael Whitaker, said the Celtics had promised to select Hill with the 30th pick if he was available. With Hill off the board, Boston selected New Mexico guard J.R. Giddens with its first-round pick. Despite Whitaker's claims, an NBA source said the two players on Celtics general manager Danny Ainge's wish list with the 30th pick were Giddens and swingman Bill Walker.

Danny made a promise to Hill? The Spurs have a way of taking players the Celtics want. I still haven't forgiven them for getting the first pick back in 1997. It may work out well, because I like Giddens and think he will be a very good player. I am also very excited about Walker. Danny was able to pick 2 players with low risk high reward type potential.

The Boston Globe tells us that there could be something contract wise about James Posey today. There are several teams interested including the Wizards, Lakers, Cavs, and Detroit, but according to reports, New Orleans has come out as the Celtics biggest rival to sign him. Posey will be in Boston today for the premiere of the Championship DVD and he will be promoting the DVD with Eddie House from 2-4 p.m. at Borders on Tuesday. Maybe it's me, but I don't see him announcing that he is signing with another team today and then facing the Celtics fans tomorrow to promote the DVD. So in my opinion, either he is re-signing with the Celtics or he isn't announcing it today.

According to ESPN, Ron Artest is now actively pushing for a trade and will act as his own agent. He has sent several emails to ESPN over the weekend expressing this fact. The article reports that the Kings want Lamar Odom for Artest and Kenny Thomas, but the Lakers don't want to give up Odom. It also shares some of the ramblings from Artest's emails to them including these gems:

"In a way I wish this [coming 2008-09 season] would have been [Theus'] first year and [Adelman] would have left this summer, because it could have showed how much [of] a winner I am. Guys like Rick Adelman and Rick Carlisle [brought] that out of me. Isiah [Thomas] was going to bring that out of me if he didn't get fired [by the Knicks]. A coach like Phil Jackson can bring that out me."
"When Rick Adelman got fired and Bonzi [Wells] didn't get re-signed, that messed up my legacy as a King because we were headed in the right direction. Now it's like I have to re-identify what type of team play I can bring to a team.
"I was blinded by friendship. Even Mama Maloof [Colleen Maloof, Joe and Gavin's mother] told me she wanted me to stay. I never knew that meant one more year. I thought it meant several. When Mama [Maloof] talks, you listen, and it's a must you consider and take heed to what she is saying.
"I didn't know I would be on this roller-coaster ride. Even my coaches convinced me things will be OK. I guess they didn't know, either, that would mean a couple more years. I feel like I let my family down by not being a smarter businessman."

The SacBee reported that all this is news to his actual agent who said that he still represents Artest. I guess after pouring his heart out in the emails to ESPN, he didn't have anything left to say as when interviewed in Vegas at the SL games, he answered no comment to every question asked as reported on Yahoo Sports. I really hope the Lakers are able to trade for him. They deserve each other.

It is being reported that the Clippers have already spoken to Andre Iguodala about an offer. Iguadala is a restricted free agent and the Sixers have made it clear that they will match any offers made to Iguodala. What better way to get even with the Sixers for luring away Brand. Make a huge offer to Iguodala so that either the Sixers have to pay more than they planned or let him go. If the Sixers choose not to match, the Clippers get a good player and get a certain amount of revenge.

David Lee is looking for a long term extension with the Knicks but they are reluctant to make an offer that goes beyond 2010 because they want to make a play for LeBron or any one of several stars that will be on the market that off season. Lee has been mentioned in several trade talks as to get rid of some of their dead weight, the Knicks may have to sweeten the deal by including Lee, who would really like to stay in New York. If they don't give Lee the extension, he will become a free agent after the season and newly signed rookie, Danilo Gallinari, plays his position so they may just let him go.
I like David Lee as a player and wouldn't mind having him in Boston but don't see a way to get him unless the Knicks wanted Scal, whose contract happens to be up after next year to clear space for LeBron. Unlikely, I know.

Gallinari has been very impressive so far. The coaching staff is most impressed with Gallinari's court awareness, which can't be taught. He can definitely find the open guy. He also is able to hit the outside shot and may be the Knicks best outside shooter this season according to his teammates. He is also reportedly very tough and willing to bang inside. The Knicks may have gotten a gem in this kid. Newsday reported this hilarious exchange between Quentin Richardson and Gallinari:

So anyway, Q sits down next to Gallo and asks him about this kissing routine the young Italian seems to have when he greets people he knows.

"Everybody I meet, I kiss them on each cheek," Danilo says.

Richardson seemed quite uncomfortable with this fact. "Really?"

Gallinari then quickly added, "But only the women."

"You and I will get along well then," Richardson replied.

The Orlando Magic have offered Keyon Dooling a contract, but it likely isn't enough for him to return and back up starting point guard Jameer Nelson. They offered him a 2 year contract at the bi-annual exception of 1.9 million a year. He made almost double that last year and so it doesn't seem like enough to keep him with several other teams interested in him as well. The Magic desperately need point guard help as they only have Jameer Nelson at that position right now. They are also looking at bringing back Carlos Arroyo or going after Jason Williams, Anthony Johnson or Tyronn Lue, who reportedly is choosing between the Heat, Celtics and Suns at present.

The Heat, like the Knicks and Nets have been working to clear space for the 2010 free agency period when Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and several other top-tier NBA players such as Kobe Bryant, Amare Stoudemire and Chris Bosh all become free agents. Playing at Zo's Charity game, both Wade and LeBron joked about playing together in 2010. There may be a pairing in superstars in that offseason as LeBron lures Wade to Miami or LeBron lures Wade to Cleveland or several land on another team. Ray Allen's contract will be up that year as well so the Celtics may be in the hunt for a free agent also. It will be a busy off season that year.

Robert "Tractor" Traylor, who last played in the NBA in 2005, is playing on the Cavs Summer League team. This is the second time in the past eight months the Cavs have taken a look at Traylor. Last December, he worked out for the team before Anderson Varejao settled his contract dispute and returned to the team. He has played the past two seasons in Puerto Rico but would love another shot at playing in the NBA. In November 2005, he had heart surgery to correct an enlarged aortic valve, similar to the surgery that Ronny Turiaf and Etan Thomas have both had, but Traylor couldn't get back into the NBA after his surgery. He is hoping that his Summer League stint witht he Cavs will open up an opportunity with the Cavs or another team that sees him play.

The Warriors are intent on keeping Andre Biedrins and Monta Ellis. And though a league source said Ellis has drawn sign-and-trade interest from the Heat, Cavs and Blazers, nothing is likely to materialize. Any scenario would require approval from the Warriors who have said that they will match any offers made to their two free agents.

NewsOK reports that the league will start selling gear for the Oklahoma City Whatevers this week although they still have not come up with the official name or logo for the team as yet. The tee shirts and hats on sale this week will feature the black and white Oklahoma City logo the team used in the Orlando Pro Summer League last week.

Q-Rich excited to be a Knick?

Who would ever though a player would be excited to play for the New York Knicks? Not me, and I'm a Knicks fan. Ever since Isiah Thomas was brought aboard the mood has just soured every year, no matter what the players have said. But now with Mike D'Antoni the tide of emotion seems to be changing. Yeah, we've all heard already about the struggles D'Antoni and Stephon Marbury had with each other out in Phoenix but there is at least one player who can't wait for the season to get underway. That player is none other then the oft-injured Quentin Richardson.

The key to the Knick's recent coaching upgrade seems to be a desire to make a man out of Quentin Richardson once and for all. Mike D'. had some success with Q-Rich once. . .
