When it rains, it bores.

(Photo of TV/MASN by Nationals Enquirer Staff. With J.D. Martin gazing at the rain, a disgusted Jason Bergmann kicks a wall moments after throwing his glove, moments after being pulled off the field in the 9th for yet another rain delay at Land Shark Stadium. The good news is, the umps finally called it off about an hour later.)

"Before the first rain delay, it was fine. But after we came back from the rain delay, we just got drenched. It was tough. But that&#...

Scratching Out a Win - Cubs 9 Nationals 4

Game One Hundred Twenty-Four - Cubs 9 Nationals 4
WP - Angel Guzman (3-3) LP - Jason Bergmann (2-3) Save - None

The Cubs did just enough in the first seven innings Wednesday night then pulled away late to pick up the win against the Washington Nationals. The final score does not indicate how close the game was for the first seven and a half innings. Milton Bradley drove in the Cubs' first three runs, including the eventual game winner in the seventh that gave the Cubs a 3-2 lead. Bra...

The Philadelphia Phillies begin a 3 game set with the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Park tonight at 7:05. Washington is currently in a 10-game losing streak, and the Phils have every intention of upping that gruesome total to 13 by Thursday evening. Starting tonight will be Joe Blanton (6-12, 4.79 era, 1.40 whip) for the Phils and Jason Bergmann (2-9, 4.51, 1.40) for the Nats.
Nationals Eying Slugger?

The Nationals have assembled a team that lacks a power hitter to build a lineup around and an ace to work off of in the rotation. They have several young, unproven pitchers in the rotation who could be affected long term by their continued struggles all season. By bringing in a second tier pitcher like Jon Garland to lead this rotation would take a lot of pressure off pitchers Jason Bergmann and Colin Balester. However, GM Jim Bowden said he would not spend free agent money on pitching, but rather on hitting. When I spoke with Bowden he told me that spending money on the free agent market will be a last resort.

Rumors have been flying that the Nationals are preparing to open their wallets on a big name free agent. Jim Bowden spent several years with Adam Dunn in Cincinnati and might target him for the Nationals. However, that would be a long term investment to a .247 hitter, something the Nationals shouldn't do. It would be much smarter to target Matt Holliday of the Rockies, who is under contract until 2009 and would give them the power hitter they need. Yes he would cost them nearly 100 million, but he would give them a power hitter and leverage in negotiations with other players. This might not be Jim Bowden's decision this off season, but the Nationals would be smart to make a big time move to help this team in the future.

Startling Starters...

The GNUru's list of the most surprising starting pitchers in fantasy baseball!!

While it's still too early to read to much into the early season stats, many unheralded players are off to impressive starts. If you drafted, picked up, or traded for some of the following players, your fantasy team is likely off to an equally impressive start. Although it would be foolish to count on this kind of production to continue for some of these players, stranger things have been known to happen.
