Lithuania downs ice-cold Nigeria

Darius Songaila scored 12 points and Linas Kleiza added 11 to help Lithuania beat Nigeria 72-53 on Tuesday for its first victory in the Olympic men's basketball tournament.

Rimantas Kaukenas finished with 10 points for Lithuania, which bounced back from an opening loss to Argentina. Nigeria fell to 1-1 after opening the tournament with a win over Tunisia.

Lithuania has a long basketball pedigree that includes three Olympic bronze medals. Nigeria is making its first Olympic appearance in men's basketball.

Nigeria shot only 24 percent from the field and made only one of its 16 3-point attempts.

Lithuania led 34-27 at halftime and steadily increased its margin throughout the third quarter.

Al-Farouq Aminu of the New Orleans Hornets and Ike Diogu had double-doubles for Nigeria. Aminu had 12 points and 11 rebounds; Diogu finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Olympic-bound teams stop in Houston

Mike Baker heard about the game on the BBC's website, and if you have to pick any one thing that underscores the randomness of the event, that was it.

Baker is a 39-year-old native of London who a few years ago met a girl from Shreveport, La. They got married, moved to Houston, and five years later Baker was sitting in Hofheinz Pavilion on the campus of the University of Houston on a Friday night, drinking a beer with his brother-in-law and watching Great Britain play Lithuania in basketball.

"It's the smallest crowd I've ever seen for an international competition, in any sport," Baker said.

An official attendance number wasn't announced, but at tipoff I counted 129 people who appeared to have been paying customers. The whole thing might have felt a little surreal, except that surrealism is nearly impossible within the gray concrete walls of Hofheinz Pavilion, a 43-year-old dungeon of a basketball arena that is anticipating a $40 million renovation in the near future.

Video: Arvydas Sabonis works out with the Lithuanian National team

Don’t call it a comeback…
Instead chalk this practice footage of Arvydas Sabonis with the Lithuanian National team up to him investing in the future of Lithuanian basketball as the president of Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF).
No more suit and tie and press conferences.
The big man is back on the floor where he belongs, putting guys like the Toronto Raptors young prospect, Jonas Valanciunas and NBA and Euro vet Darius Songaila as they make at run at the 2012 London Olympics.
The Basketball Hall of Fame center joined the Lithuanian National team in Houston yesterday as they undergo training camp and compete in some friendly games with the Great Britain and Russian National teams before they travel to Venezuela for the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Sabonis said shortly after being named LKF president last fall that he is dedicated to the promotion of the team and game in Lithuania and the former center for the Portland Trail Blazers has certainly walked the talk.

Songaila: Best hope for Galatasaray upset?Just enough time to get in a couple of Fearless Predictions™ before the final two teams to participate in Euroleague 2011-12 are determined, BallinEurope thinks … So let’s get to it!
Lietuvos Rytas vs. Galatasaray Café Crown Galatasaray looked impressive in dispatching Asvel Villeurbanne (O, Tony Parker, où êtes-vous?) and putting up 93 points, the highest total registered in qualifying round games thus far. Better yet, the high-profile additions to the already solid Turkish team’s roster appear to be working perfectly: Jaka Lakovic and Darius Songaila contributed a whopping 40 points combined in the win.
On the other side of the court, Lietuvos Rytas has taken care of business against both opponents faced – KK Buducnost and Cibona Zagreb – with their margins of victory 19 and 16 points, respectively. L.Rytas started the match with the intriguing and somewhat unexpectated combination of Jonas Valanciunas and Vilmantas Dilys at the forward sp...
