Catching Movements: Olivo, Schneider, Shoppach, Mauer, Diaz and More

The Royals declined to offer C-Miguel Olivo arbitration today. This hardly comes as a shock to anyone, but there has been plenty of news surrounding other catchers the last several days. Since the Kansas City clearly has a need at the position every one of these moves or rumors can have an impact on the [...]

Royals Seeking A Catcher

After declining their 2010 option for Miguel Olivo, the Royals are searching for a catcher according to Bob Dutton of The KC Star. Dutton mentions that it would be best for the team to fill their hole behind the plate prior to December 12th, allowing them to non-tender the incumbent John Buck.
“We led all of baseball (last season) in passed balls and wild pitches,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “That will be fixed in 2010. Our defense in general is our main objective to fix before ...

Royals release Olivo, best of the bad options for the Mets?

According to Tim Dierkes at MLBTR, the Royals have released Miguel Olivo and others. Olivo is possibly the best of the worst. He is almost decent from a horrible crop of available catchers. He hit .249 this past year and...

Add Olivo to the catching list

The Royals have opted to decline Miguel Olivo's 3M club option, the 31 y/o veteran catcher is now a free agent. Olivo hit .249 last year with 23 HRs, for a team in need of power he might become a player of interest to the Mets...Olivo is most remembered by Mets fans for his second to last day of the season altercation with Jose Reyes in 2007 which supposedly served as a rally cry for the Marlins. However, both parties dismiss the altercation as "the heat of the moment" and consi...

The Royals are on the clock with Olivo

I've already posted on the Royals catchers, this is simply an up-date. Miguel Olivo would be a solid option for our catching vacancy but if the Royals keep him then they may need to move either Pena or Buck. The Royals have three days to decide on Olivo's option which is 3.3M, if they pick-it up but he declines ( mutual option) then he gets 100k buyout...Olivo, 31, had a career-best and club-leading 23 homers last season and exhibited better defense in the closing weeks but still batt...

Triple-A Catching Options from Other Organizations

A few days ago I examined the Royals’ catchers and concluded that John Buck provides a better 2010 option than Miguel Olivo. Since Buck is arbitration eligible, the Royals would need to sign him to a deal in the vicinity of $3.5 million, or less, for it to make sense for the team to bring [...]

Caught Up in a Catching Situation

The Royals had a three-headed monster at catcher for parts of the 2009 season. It seems safe to assume that heading into 2010 they will have a more conventional approach to the position and carry just 2 catchers, but who those catchers will be remains very much up in the air.
Miguel Olivo (30) hit 0.249/.292/.490 [...]

Miguel Olivo singles in his third at bat, giving him three quarters of the cycle. He just needs the double, and with the Royals leading the Twins 9-1 in the top of the fifth, he has plenty of time to get the two-bagger.

Wednesday Walk Watch: Week fiWteen

Look, I don’t know what the hell happened this week.
For fourteen weeks, we had a nice little thing going. Benjie Molina and Miguel Olivo. Two catchers, one in each league. Both of them flatly refusing to accept a walk. While known free swingers around the majors — Alfie Soriano, Vlady Guerrero, “Swingin’ Yuni” Betancourt — piled up the bases on balls, Molina and Olivo held their ground. Three walks apiece; less than one per month. Molina hadn’t walked un-intentionally since the middle of May. It seemed possible — even likely — that these two poor saps might never walk again.
That was before this week.
Last time we checked on Molina, our front-runner for the What, Me Walky? award, he was up to 296 at bats...

Royals catcher Olivo suspended for arguing

Kansas City catcher Miguel Olivo has been suspended for one game for an animated argument with an umpire in Pittsburgh last Saturday.

Olivo chose to serve the suspension on Wednesday, which left the Royals without an experienced backup catcher for their game against the Minnesota Twins. John Buck, the other catcher, is rehabbing a back injury.

Olivo was also fined an undisclosed amount for what was termed inappropriate actions against umpire Phil Cuzzi.
