Ortiz will hit the DL, but further evaluation of his elbow did not reveal a torn ligament as was initially expected, according to Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com. Ortiz exited his last appearance against the San Diego Padres. He experienced severe discomfort after throwing a pitch to third baseman Chase Headley, and he immediately threw his glove to the ground as he believed his career had come to an end. Ortiz will continue to undergo testing to determine the extent of the damage, but so far there hasn't been a significant injury revealed. Tom Malloney of the Globe and Journal says the injury is suspected to be a torn ligament in the pitching elbow.  Ortiz is being sent to Florida for an MRI to confirm the extent and severity of the injury.  However, if it is in fact a torn ligament, Ortiz's career is likely over. Surgery and recovery at this stage in his life would be difficult.  He would miss the remainder of this season and a large chunk of next season.  Ortiz would then have to prove to a team that he can come back post-surgery at 41 and still pitch effectively.  That's not a probable scenario.
