Angels Classic Rewind | Dateline: June 8th, 2002

By Joe Haakenson, AngelsWin.com Contributor -

JUNE 8, 2002

GAME 59 - REDS AT ANGELS

ANAHEIM – Angels starting pitcher Ramon Ortiz pitched seven strong inning, but the Angels bullpen gave up two runs in the eighth that were the difference in the Cincinnati Reds’ 4-3 win over the Angels before 29,881 at Edison Field.

Ortiz gave up two runs and four hits in his seven innings, leaving with the game tied, 2-2. But Dennis Cook and Ben Weber combined to give up two hits and two walks in the eighth, allowing the Reds to push across two runs.

The Angels scored once in the bottom of the ninth on Bengie Molina’s RBI groundout, but it was not enough.

The Angels had eight hits in the game, led by Garret Anderson, who had two, raising his season average to .310.

Blue Jays place Ramon Ortiz on DL

It's never good news when a player is placed on the disabled list, but in the case of Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Ramon Ortiz there was a sense that the worst-case scenario was avoided with yesterday's announcement. Ortiz will hit the DL, but further evaluation of his elbow did not reveal a torn ligament as was initially expected, according to Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com. Ortiz exited his last appearance against the San Diego Padres. He experienced severe discomfort after throwing a pitch to third baseman Chase Headley, and he immediately threw his glove to the ground as he believed his career had come to an end. Ortiz will continue to undergo testing to determine the extent of the damage, but so far there hasn't been a significant injury revealed. Manager John Gibbons was among those surprised by the results. "It shocked me," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of the news while adding the two have exchanged text messages. “He has been around a long t...

The end of Ramon Ortiz’ career

You might not remember Ramon Ortiz from his time with the Cincinnati Reds. He was in the starting rotation for the forgettable 2005 team and wasn’t the worst starter–Eric Milton and Luke Hudson were battling for that title. But I do remember his love of cutting the hair of his teammates.
Yesterday, his comeback attempt with the Toronto Blue Jays ended in a spectacularly painful and public fashion, as he felt a tear in his elbow after delivering a pitch.

You can tell Ortiz knows it’s the end. At 40, he’s not likely to come back from an extended rehab.

Blue Jays' Ramon Ortiz leaves game, career may be over

In what was a clearly emotional moment, Toronto Blue Jays starter Ramon Ortiz may have seen his career come to an end last night. The 40-year old pitcher was injured while throwing a pitch to Chase Headley of the San Diego Padres. Ortiz understood the severity of the injury and its likely implication immediately and broke down in tears before leaving the game.

Tom Malloney of the Globe and Journal says the injury is suspected to be a torn ligament in the pitching elbow. Ortiz is being sent to Florida for an MRI to confirm the extent and severity of the injury. However, if it is in fact a torn ligament, Ortiz's career is likely over.

Surgery and recovery at this stage in his life would be difficult. He would miss the remainder of this season and a large chunk of next season. Ortiz would then have to prove to a team that he can come back post-surgery at 41 and still pitch effectively. That's not a probable scenario.

Blue Jays 7, Padres 4(11)

Toronto's bullpen was lights-out in a three-game series against San Diego, from a series-opening, 17-inning game that stretched from Friday night into Saturday morning through Sunday night's finale, when the Blue Jays lost 40-year-old starter Ramon Ortiz to an apparent right elbow injury.

Mark DeRosa hit a go-ahead homer into the second deck in left field leading off the 11th inning and the Blue Jays beat the Padres 7-4 Sunday night to avoid a three-game sweep.

Six relievers allowed just two singles in nine innings of scoreless relief after Ortiz was hurt throwing his third pitch to Chase Headley leading off the Padres' third.

For the series, the pen allowed just one run and 10 hits in 22 2-3 innings while striking out 16 and walking eight.

''They truly have been great all year for us and we've certainly needed them to be that way to keep our heads above water,'' DeRosa said. ''You never like to use them that much, but tonight was an exception to the rule.''

Volquez hits 3-run homer in Padres' loss

Edinson Volquez squared up and drove Ramon Ortiz's pitch into the left-field seats for a three-run home run, one of the few bright spots in San Diego's 7-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday night.

It was the first homer in Volquez's big league career.

''You know what they say? A moving bat is a dangerous bat,'' manager Bud Black said. ''That's what you saw.''

Mark DeRosa hit a go-ahead homer into the second deck in left field leading off the 11th inning and the Blue Jays avoided a three-game sweep.

It was the second extra-inning game of the series. The Padres won Friday night's game 4-3 in 17 innings.

Volquez's second-inning homer provided the bulk of San Diego's offense.

''After the home run, we really didn't do enough to put pressure on them and add on some runs,'' Will Venable said. ''We have to do a better job there than we did.''

Ortiz leaves with apparent right elbow injury

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Ramon Ortiz left Sunday night's game against San Diego with what appeared to be an injury to his right elbow.

The 40-year-old Ortiz was hurt on a pitch to Chase Headley in the bottom of the third. Ortiz's left knee appeared to buckle slightly and he came up holding his right elbow. He took his glove in his left hand and slammed it to the ground at the back of the mound. A trainer came out and was looking at the pitcher's right elbow.

Ortiz appeared to be crying as he walked to the dugout.

Ortiz was recalled prior to Saturday's game when Brandon Morrow was placed on the disabled list with a forearm strain.

Ortiz allowed a three-run homer to San Diego starter Edinson Volquez in the second, his first career homer.

Jays put Morrow on DL, recall Ortiz

The Blue Jays have placed right-hander Brandon Morrow on the 15-day disabled list and called up 40-year-old Ramon Ortiz to replace him.

Morrow (2-3) has a 5.63 earned-run average, with 42 strikeouts. The 28-year-old left a start against Atlanta on May 28 after only two innings due to right forearm tightness. Ortiz (1-2) has appeared in six games this season for Toronto, with a 5.01 ERA.

Starting pitcher Ricky Romero was sent outright to Triple-A Buffalo to make space on the 40-man roster. Reliever Chad Jenkins was optioned to Buffalo on Friday, with Mickey Storey moving up to Toronto.

The 27-year-old Storey has made two appearances for Toronto in 2013, recording a 7.36 ERA over 3.2 innings.

Toronto Blue Jays Designate RHP Ramon Ortiz For Assignment

The Toronto Blue Jays have chosen to designate right-handed starter Ramon Ortiz for assignment on Tuesday. Posting a 5.01 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP this season with Toronto, Ortiz hasn’t pitched effectively at the major league level since 2004.
Ortiz will have to clear waivers and accept an assignment to remain in the organization. Considering that he boasts an ERA of almost 5 during his career and a WHIP of 1.423 to go along with averaging more than a home run every seven innings pitched, Ortiz most likely won’t be in high deman.
