Kevin McHale joins NBA TV; replaces Gary Payton's collar

Big news via Sports Media Watch today: Former Minnesota Timberwolves vice president Kevin McHale has found a new job, joining Ernie Johnson and Chris Webber(notes) on NBA TV's Tuesday "Fan Night" telecasts, replacing my friend, and yours, Gary Payton(notes).I'm not overly excited about the move. As scatterbrained as GP was at times on air — "Ching sham on, man. I like dat. It like when you got hit." — there's no denying that he and C-Webb made for ...

[Webber's] raw point and rebound numbers looked good, but anything more than a superficial look at his advanced numbers revealed a player who was shooting too much for his team's own good, and those numbers hardly did justice to a player who was by then one of the worst team and individual defenders in the league.

Chris Webber Interview

Yesterday as I was reading Skeets 10 Man Rotation, I came across this amazing interview conducted by the guys over at The Starting Five. Michael Tillery sat down with Chris Webber recently and got one of the most candid CWebb interviews you’ll ever read. This isn’t the typical bullcrap media interview or a team controlled [...]

Ty Lawson: The Early Years

Since folks have already been talking about here is the always excellent Luke Winn and his column on Ty Lawson and Villanova’s Dante Cunningham back when they played together on the same youth basketball team coached by their fathers at Andrews AFB in Maryland.

The Andrews Magic went 80-7 over an eight-year span that began in ‘95, regularly “playing up” — against local competition at least 1-2 years older than their age group. Dante Cunningham said he recently looked through an old scrapbook that the two coaches had put together, and found a sheet in which they had asked each player — when they were just 11 — to state what college they dreamed of playing for. Dante wrote down Michigan, or Georgetown, which had recently been the homes of Chris Webber and Allen Iverson, respectively. Ty Lawson listed just one school: North Carolina. “When I saw that,” Cunningham said, “I thought, ‘Wow. That’s crazy, that he already knew back then.’”

Long before Lawson would become a Tar Heel, win the 2009 ACC Player of the Year award, or be named the South Region’s Most Outstanding Player, he was just a 4-year-old flying up and down the court with his father, who would bring Ty along to the Andrews gym if he agreed to do two hours of drill-work on fundamentals. The most famous were what they called “commando” ballhandling drills, where George would stand at midcourt and shout out a series of commands — such as, in-and-out, crossover and behind the back — as Ty dribbled at him. Ty eventually learned to perform the moves instantaneously. “You have to be able to do stuff like that in games without thinking,” George said. “It got to the point where I’d be able to yell out five or six in a row and he’d finish them before he got to me.”

Good story, be sure to read the whole article.

Video: Charles Barkley Wears a Mini Skirt and Panties

Charles Barkley Wears a Mini Skirt and Panties? Chris Webber, an original member of the Fab 5, gives Chuck some grief over his Auburn uniform. I am going to have to say that this was an “Old School Fail”. Shorts this short are not cool on any level. On the bright side, Charles was in shape and flying high. .

Despite a stellar NBA career, the future Hall-of-Famer does not want to be known exclusively as a basketball player, according to a source close to Webber.

Webber cleared. Ready to resume retirement.

Janny Hu of the SF Chronicle is reporting Chris Webber will announce his retirement after 15 seasons in the NBA at a press conference tomorrow morning at 10am.

Regardless of his production (or lack of) on the hardwood for the Dubs, it sounds like the move to bring C-Webb back to Oakland has been productive and emotional healing for he and Nelson.

Webber to the Warriors? Matt Barnes approves.

In a bizarre week of Seinfeldian symmetry, I ran into Matt Barnes at the Adidas Heritage store in Berkeley yesterday. Not one to shy from an improptu interview opportunity, I went up and introduced myself. I had to try and find out something about the Webber to the Warriors rumor. The conversation went about like this.

Make the jump to see what Matt Barnes had to say.

Jalen Rose: Fab Five billboard

Great post from the blog, Deuce of Davenport.

"Michigan alum and current Phoenix Sun Jalen Rose bought a billboard to honor the Fab Five the season after their 15-year anniversary."

Because of Chris Webber's indiscretions, the Fab Five's banners had to be taken down at the school.

"Rose had the billboard placed in Detroit near the area where he and Webber grew up."

Cool article, includes picture of billboard.

The Chris Webber Face

It's hard to say what happened to Chris Webber, save for saying that his legs and his heart have finally given up on him. The first few months were ecstasy, the Pistons kept on winning and they could barely lose: It sprung a rekindling of Webber's lost passion and intensity. However, like all good relationships, the excitement just drops little by little until passiveness takes over; only in Webber's case, the excitement lasted much much shorter. So when playoffs came, he was sloppy, and he was slow.

Will Chris Webber Decide Who Wins the 2007 NBA Title?

Stop me if you've heard this story before: an All-Star power forward wears out his welcome with several teams; he amasses impressive statistics but his teams do not win any championships; by the time his last team gives up on him, he is barely averaging 10 ppg and his career seems to be coming to an unceremonious end. Sounds like Chris Webber, right? It does, but I'm actually referring to Bob McAdoo. The Lakers acquired McAdoo in December 1981 to replace the injured Mitch Kupchak and McAdoo revived his career, making indispensable contributions to two Lakers title runs in the next four years. Then Lakers Coach Pat Riley has said on more than one occasion that the Lakers would not have won those championships without McAdoo.
