Ortiz is Missing Manny

While David Ortiz is not completely healthy after his return from the DL, he has slumped since Manny Ramirez's departure last week. In his first six games back, he hit .423. In the five games since Manny left, he has gone 2-for-20. If whoever is hitting behind him (Lowell, Bay or Youklis) doesn't hit, Ortiz is going to get a different selection of pitches from here on out.

Ortiz' wrist injury resurfaces..

While observing the 9th inning of last night's game against the Royals, I noticed something with David Ortiz' swing. The first pitch Ortiz saw in that at bat he looked like he was trying to smash the hell out of the ball, only 3/4 of the way through his swing it almost looked like he was trying to hold up.

I didn't think anything of it, but later on it happened again when Ortiz fouled off another Joakim Soria pitch. It all came together this morning while listening to Felger & Bradford discuss the apparent injury on WEEI. Further more, Tony Massarotti reported the injury earlier this morning in the Herald.

Ortiz says he felt a "click" in the same injured wrist from earlier this season, leaving Red Sox Nation very concerned.

"My last at-bat, it kind of pulled back a little bit………you feel that click and you get a little concerned about it."

Oakland Athletics: Red Sox rally all game long to embarrass the A's

Momma said there'd be days like this. That doesn't make it any easier to swallow though.
Hoorah, Goodbye Manny

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_3BaJMgGKAmE/SJMFVcXSrWI/AAAAAAAAEU0/RhZFJ3egeXg/s320/manny+ramirez.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5229529458256555362" />Even with the Yanks getting the crap kicked out of them last night by the Angels, it was a very good day to be a Yankee fan. For all the stupid annoying stuff that Manny pulls every year and for all the escapades in the outfield, Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz have combined to be the best duo in MLB for a very long time. And now that duo is dead and we shall rejoice.

Let's just take a quick gander at how much of a Yankee killer Manny Ramirez has been. In 2008 Manny is hitting .417 with an OPS of 1.301, in 07 he hit .392 with a 1.161 OPS, in 06 he hit .556 with an OPS of 1.778 (that's f'n ridiculous), in 05 he hit .324 with an OPS of 1.034, and for his career overall he is at .321 with an OPS of 1.029. He has been nothing less than the bane of the Yankees pitching staff. And in the postseason for Boston he has been extraordinary as well. In 9 postseason series with the Red Sox he has hit over .300 in 7 of them. Most importantly Ramirez hit over .300 in every single series in 2004, in helping the Red Sox secure their first title in basically ever fans life time.

So we opponents shall rejoice in the fact that no longer will Manny be crushing homers off Mike Mussina over the Green Monster. Rather the Yankees shall be facing Jason Bay. A solid player who is a borderline all star, but whom has never even sniffed a pennant race nevermind the postseason. What will Jason Bay do in a Red Sox uniform? Will the pressure eat at him or will he thrive? No one knows. What we do know is that Manny did thrive and that the Red Sox in order to get rid of his headache were forced to take a player of lesser hitting prowess, pay off Manny's contract and give up two players from their roster. Well then that's a pretty good day. Thanks go to Manny for being an unbearable asshole.

Was Manny's Trade A Good One?

As most of you know Manny is still Manny but not with the Redsox. Before the 4 p.m deadline today Manny was traded in a 3 way trade that involved the Redsox, Dodgers, and the Pirates. Manny went to the Dodgers and is now playing for ex manager of the Yankees Joe Torri. The Sox got Jason Bay which isn't Many but is still good and Pitt got 3 prospects. Was this trade good? I think so. Manny wasn't really trying the last couple of game and made it clear he wants out. Come September and October is Manny really going to put his heart in it if he was still with the Redsox. So for now Manny got what he wanted. But the real question is how is Manny going to act with former Yanks manger Joe Torri?

Breaking: Manny Ramirez Traded to Florida Marlins ... Reports Fly In

Breaking news: reports are flying in that the Boston Red Sox have now made their major move... or at least the first of the 2008 season ... as they have traded maniac Manny Ramirez. This seems to be his final game at Fenway Park.

So who is the fill in? Barry Bonds? Matt Holliday? Jacoby Ellsbury on roids?

Great Overweight Athletes

I reported yesterday that Broncos' right guard Montrae Holland reported to camp 9 lbs. overweight and has to shed the pounds before practicing with his team. Holland weighed 350-360 lbs. during the off-season, and lost a lot of it before reporting to camp. He has jeopardized his starting spot and his health. Here's a video of Holland explaining his condition.
Some people might say that it's part of his job to stay in top physical condition even during the off-season. Do you see marathon runners smoking a pack a day during their off-season? Would you want to see your brain surgeon hungover the day before he/she preformed your surgery? Do you see your pilot boarding the plane drunk…, er, never mind. Anyway, I know football is just a game, but it is also a job for these guys. Just because they are professional athletes does not mean that they can choose when to deal with their responsibilities.
Everyone (athlete or not) struggles with their weight at one point in their life for various reasons. We usually don't think of athletes as overweight, but many are right in the middle of a stellar career. So, I've decided to compose a list of the top overweight athletes in no particular order:
1. Charles Barkley - he was stout in his playing days too. How do you think a guy who's 6?4" got all those rebounds?
2. Babe Ruth - they didn't name a candy bar after him for nothing.
3. George Foreman - won a heavyweight belt and moved on to selling grills.
4. Shaquille O'Neal - constantly reported to camp overweight yet still has some rings. Shaq, tell me how your food tastes.
5. Sebastian Janikowski - thought he had to get a lot of weight behind his kicks.

6. Big Papi David Ortiz - much of his big paycheck goes towards groceries.
7. John Daly - athlete that is most proud of his physique. Plays golf without shirt probably because of the fried chicken stains.
8. Oliver Miller - another basketball player makes the list. He played his final season with the Timberwolves in 03?-04? at 325 lbs.
9. Most bowlers
10. Close to half the field in any competitive eating competition
11. Players in the regualr Nintendo's hockey game
Whose got other suggestions?

Ode to Roy Halladay: Best in the MLB?

I refuse to link to the original piece, so you'll have to take my word for it that someone actually wrote (and hence, believes) that Harry Leroy 'Roy' "Doc" Halladay is bloody over-rated. I submit to you the fragile introspections that brewed following the sight of such baseless criticism of one of baseballs' finest.
